  • The HURRIER process for experimentation in business-to-business mission-critical systems

    • Continuous experimentation (CE) refers to a set of practices used by software companies to rapidly assess the usage, value, and performance of deployed software using data collected from customers and systems in the field using an experimental methodology. However, despite its increasing popularity in developing web-facing applications, CE has not been studied in the development process of business-to-business (B2B) mission-critical systems. By observing the CE practices of different teams, with a case study methodology inside Ericsson, we were able to identify the different practices and techniques used in B2B mission-critical systems and a description and classification of the four possible types of experiments. We present and analyze each of the four types of experiments with examples in the context of the mission-critical long-term evolution (4G) product. These examples show the general experimentation process followed by the teams and the use of the different CE practices and techniques. Based on these examples and the empirical data, we derived the HURRIER process to deliver high-quality solutions that the customers value. Finally, we discuss the challenges, opportunities, and lessons learned from applying CE and the HURRIER process in B2B mission-critical systems.

    • The Open Graph protocol, introduced in 2010, has allowed Facebook to extend its reach far beyond the confines of the platform itself. It provides the basic technical infrastructure of connecting and sharing and encourages specific forms of analysis and usage. We argue that, if Facebook is to be conceptualized as a mass medium, the Open Graph is where media and masses mutually (re-)configure one another. In order to disentangle these relationships, we investigate backend and frontend practices from three different angles – descriptive, analytical and historical – and investigate how seemingly incompatible media promises converge.

    • Although the potential advantages of clinical germline genome editing (GGE) over currently available methods are limited, the implementation of GGE in the clinic has been proposed and discussed. Ethical issues related to such an application have been extensively debated, meanwhile, seemingly less attention has been paid to ethical implications of studies which would have to be conducted in order to evaluate potential clinical uses of GGE.In this article, we first provide an overview of the debate on potential clinical uses of GGE. Then, we discuss questions and ethical issues related to the studies relevant to evaluation of potential clinical uses of GGE. In particular, we describe the problems related to the acceptable safety threshold, current technical hurdles in human GGE, the destruction of human embryos used in the experiments, involvement of egg donors, and genomic sequencing performed on the samples of the research participants.The technical and ethical problems related to studies on GGE should be acknowledged and carefully considered in the process of deciding to apply technology in such a way that will provide benefits and minimize harms.   • Spaces of Flaws of Flows : COBOL and the back-back-ends of development

    • Software is often described according to a front-end and back-end dichotomy, with interaction happening in the former and the latter being the domain of development and maintenance. My in-depth research on and through the supposedly obsolete and highly detested programming language COBOL, goes beyond this dichotomy and reveals a back-back-end of software, as a site that makes dichotomies such as front-end and back-end possible in the first place. The persistence of COBOL as a legacy system within the digital services of the Global North is shown to be widespread, all the while these systems are maintained by workforces located in the Global South. With a focus on India, the article discusses the paradoxical situation of supposedly developed countries being dependent on labour in emerging and developing countries, in order for infrastructures to keep seeming developed. This involves processes of outsourcing and software wrapping that are described in the article along with the educational structures that are set in place for the maintenance to take place. What Manuel Castells’ once famously dubbed the space of flows of the global network society, is here discussed as having produced a ‘space of flaws’ in which a hidden workforce makes sure that the global flows keep flowing. Beyond the context of software development, I have engaged with COBOL intersectionally, through fieldwork and practice-based art and design methodologies, mapping the extent of which this language, rather than being obsolete, occupies an ‘undead’ position within planetary information networks. The article suggests that the existence of such undead legacy systems goes against ideas of linear technological development as a natural force as well as linear socio-economic development on a whole. The temporal and spatial regimes that work to hide asymmetries of development are discussed and ultimately, I suggest that, contrary to this obfuscation, we need analytical and practical approaches that actively engage these asymmetries.
