  • Thermodynamic Performance of Hot-Carrier Solar Cells: A Quantum Transport Model
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - 2331-7019. ; 19:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In conventional solar cells, photogenerated carriers lose part of their energy before they can be extracted to make electricity. The aim of hot-carrier solar cells is to extract the carriers before this energy loss, thereby turning more energy into electrical power. This requires extracting the carriers in a nonequilibrium (nonthermal) energy distribution. Here, we investigate the performance of hot-carrier solar cells for such nonequilibrium distributions. We propose a quantum transport model in which each energy-loss process (carrier thermalization, relaxation, and recombination) is simulated by a Büttiker probe. We study charge and heat transport to analyze the hot-carrier solar cell's power output and efficiency, introducing partial efficiencies for different loss processes and the carrier extraction. We show that producing electrical power from a nonequilibrium distribution has the potential to improve the output power and efficiency. Furthermore, in the limit where the distribution is thermal, we prove that a boxcar-shaped transmission for the carrier extraction maximizes the efficiency at any given output power.

  • Tunable Coupling Scheme for Implementing High-Fidelity Two-Qubit Gates
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - 2331-7019. ; 10:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The prospect of computational hardware with quantum advantage relies critically on the quality of quantum-gate operations. Imperfect two-qubit gates are a major bottleneck for achieving scalable quantum-information processors. Here, we propose a generalizable and extensible scheme for a two-qubit tunable coupler that controls the qubit-qubit coupling by modulating the coupler frequency. Two-qubit gate operations can be implemented by operating the coupler in the dispersive regime, which is noninvasive to the qubit states. We investigate the performance of the scheme by simulating a universal two-qubit gate on a superconducting quantum circuit, and find that errors from known parasitic effects are strongly suppressed. The scheme is compatible with existing high-coherence hardware, thereby promising a higher gate fidelity with current technologies.

  • Strengthening Induced by MagnetoChemical Transition in Al-Doped Fe-Cr-Co-Ni High-Entropy Alloys
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - : American Physical Society. - 2331-7019. ; 10:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alloys with adjustable mechanical performance are of fundamental interest in material designs. Here, we investigate the magnetic- and chemical-ordering behavior of the ferromagnetic Fe-Cr-Co-Ni-Al-x (1 <= x <= 2.5) high-entropy alloys with the help of first-principle alloy theory. The lattice constants and the single- and polycrystalline elastic parameters for partially ordered and random structures are considered. In contrast to the trend found for the completely disordered phase, we demonstrate that ordering driven primarily by Al results in an enhanced Young's modulus, especially at high-Al concentrations, which is in line with the observed increase of the hardness for systems with a body-centered-cubic underlying lattice. The results suggest that outstanding strength and ductility can be realized by proper control of the ordering level in single- and multiphase high-entropy alloys.

  • High-Gain Traveling-Wave Parametric Amplifier Based on Three-Wave Mixing
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - 2331-7019. ; 19:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We extend the theory for a Josephson-junction traveling-wave parametric amplifier (TWPA) operat-ing in the three-wave-mixing regime and we propose a scheme for achieving high gain. The continuous three-mode model [P.K. Tien, J. Appl. Phys. 29, 1347 (1958)] is, on one hand, extended to describe a discrete chain of Josephson junctions at high frequencies close to the spectral cutoff where there is no up -conversion. On the other hand, we also develop a continuous multimode theory for the small frequency limit where the frequency dispersion is close to linear. We find that in both cases the gain is significantly reduced compared to the prediction by the continuous three-mode model as the result of increasingly strong dispersion at the high frequencies and generation of up-converted modes at the small frequencies. The developed theory is in quantitative agreement with simulations of the full solution of the dynamical equations. To recover the high gain, we propose to engineer a chain with dispersive features to form a two-band frequency spectrum and to place the pump frequency within the upper band close to the spectral cutoff. We prove that there exists a sweet spot, where the signal and the pump are phase matched, while the up-conversion is inhibited. This results in a high gain, which grows exponentially with the length of the TWPA.

  • Peripheral circuits for ideal performance of a traveling-wave parametric amplifier
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - 2331-7019. ; 21:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the peripheral circuits required to enable ideal performance for a high-gain traveling-wave parametric amplifier (TWPA) based on three-wave mixing. By embedding the TWPA in a network of superconducting diplexers, hybrid couplers, and impedance matching networks, the amplifier can deliver a high stable gain with near-quantum-limited noise performance, with suppressed gain ripples, while eliminating the reflections of the signal, the idler and the pump as well as the transmission of all unwanted tones. We also demonstrate a configuration where the amplifier can isolate. We call this technique wideband idler filtering (WIF). The theory is supported by simulations that predict over 20 dB gain in the 4-8 GHz band with 10 dB isolation for a single amplifier and 30 dB isolation for two cascaded amplifiers. We demonstrate how the WIF-TWPAs can be used to construct controllable isolators with over 40 dB isolation over the full 4-8 GHz band. Finally, we look at nonidealities and show how certain nonidealities can be devastating for both the gain and the idler filtering, especially a cutoff imbalance or a flux imbalance, and discuss how to compensate for them.

  • Simple, Reliable, and Noise-Resilient Continuous-Variable Quantum State Tomography with Convex Optimization
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - 2331-7019. ; 18:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Precise reconstruction of unknown quantum states from measurement data, a process commonly called quantum state tomography, is a crucial component in the development of quantum informa-tion processing technologies. Many different tomography methods have been proposed over the years. Maximum-likelihood estimation is a prominent example, being the most popular method for a long period of time. Recently, more advanced neural-network methods have started to emerge. Here, we go back to basics and present a method for continuous-variable state reconstruction that is both conceptually and prac-tically simple, based on convex optimization. Convex optimization has been used for process tomography and qubit-state tomography, but seems to have been overlooked for continuous-variable quantum-state tomography. We demonstrate high-fidelity reconstruction of an underlying state from data corrupted by thermal noise and imperfect detection, for both homodyne and heterodyne measurements. A major advan-tage over other methods is that convex optimization algorithms are guaranteed to converge to the optimal solution.

  • Fabricating Nanogaps in YBa2Cu3O7-delta for Hybrid Proximity-Based Josephson Junctions
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - 2331-7019. ; 4:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The advances of nanotechnologies applied to high-critical-temperature superconductors (HTSs) have recently given a huge boost to the field, opening new prospectives for their integration in hybrid devices. The feasibility of this research goes through the realization of HTS nanogaps with superconductive properties close to the as-grown bulk material at the nanoscale. Here we present a fabrication approach allowing the realization of YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) nanogaps with dimensions as small as 35 nm. To assess the quality of the nanogaps, we measure, before and after an ozone treatment, the current-voltage characteristics and the resistance versus temperature of YBCO nanowires with various widths and lengths, fabricated by using different lithographic processes. The analysis of the superconducting transition with a thermally activated vortex-entry model allows us to determine the maximum damage the nanowires undergo during the patterning which relates to the upper bound for the dimension of the nanogap. We find that the effective width of the nanogap is of the order of 100 nm at the superconducting transition temperature while retaining the geometrical value of about 35 nm at lower temperatures. The feasibility of the nanogaps for hybrid Josephson devices is demonstrated by bridging them with thin Au films. We detect a Josephson coupling up to 85 K with an almost ideal magnetic-field response of the Josephson current. These results pave the way for the realization of complex hybrid devices, where tiny HTS nanogaps can be instrumental to study the Josephson effect through barriers such as topological insulators or graphene.

  • Z-Gate Operation on a Superconducting Flux Qubit via its Readout SQUID
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - 2331-7019. ; 3:3, s. 034004-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Detuning a superconducting qubit from its rotating frame is one means to implement a Z-gate operation. In this work, we implement a Z gate by pulsing a current through the qubit’s readout dc SQUID. While the dc SQUID acts as a magnetic flux sensor for qubit readout, we in turn may use it as a flux actuator with tunable strength to impose a qubit frequency shift. Using this approach, we demonstrate Ramsey-type free-induction experiments with time constants as long as 280 ns and rotation frequencies as high as 1.4 GHz. We experimentally demonstrate an inferred Z-gate fidelity of approximately 90%, limited largely by the bandwidth of our system. In the absence of this limitation, we argue that the inferred fidelity may be improved to as high as 99%.

  • Probing charge- and heat-current noise by frequency-dependent fluctuations in temperature and potential
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - 2331-7019. ; 10:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The energetic properties of electron transport in mesoscopic and nanoscale conductors are of considerable interest at present. Here, we theoretically investigate the possibility of probing charge- and heat-current fluctuations as well as their mixed correlations via the temperature and electrochemical potential fluctuations of a probe coupled to the conductor. Our particular interest is devoted to the charge and energy noise stemming from time-dependently-driven nanoelectronic systems designed for the controlled emission of single electrons, even though our setup is appropriate for more general ac-driving schemes. We employ a Boltzmann-Langevin approach in order to relate the bare charge- and energy-current fluctuations emitted from the electron source to frequency-dependent electrochemical potential and temperature fluctuations, which the former induce in the probe. We apply our findings to the prominent example of an on-demand single-electron source, realized by a driven mesoscopic capacitor in the quantum Hall regime. We show that neither the background fluctuations of the probe in the absence of the working source, nor the fluctuations induced by the probe hinder the access to the sought-after direct source noise for a large range of parameters.

  • Using Magnetic Droplet Nucleation to Determine the Spin Torque Efficiency and Asymmetry in Co-x(Ni,Fe)(1-x) Thin Films
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2331-7019. ; 10:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate how to extract the material-dependent spin-torque efficiency (epsilon) and asymmetry (lambda) from the field-current nucleation boundaries of magnetic droplet solitons in orthogonal nano-contact spintorque oscillators with Co-x(Ni80Fe20)(1-x), (x = 0 -1), fixed layers. As the perpendicular component of the fixed-layer magnetization plays a central role in governing droplet nucleation, the nucleation boundaries exhibit monotonic shifts towards higher perpendicular magnetic fields when the fixed-layer magnetization mu M-0(s, p) is tuned from 1.04 to 1.7 T. We then extract epsilon and lambda from fits to the nucleation boundaries and find that while epsilon does not vary with composition, lambda increases from 1.5 to 3 with increasing Co content. The analysis of droplet nucleation boundaries is hence a useful tool for the systematic study of both epsilon and lambda as functions of material composition.
