  • Introduction : Doing Good Parenthood
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Doing Good Parenthood. - Cham : Palgrave Pivot. - 9783319467733 - 9783319467740 ; , s. 1-15
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this book is to explore in ten empirical chapters how good parenthood is done in different contexts, by different agents. The introductory chapter outlines the theoretical implications of viewing parenthood as a series of practices and our interest in the enactment and negotiation of good parenthood. We argue that the doing of good parenthood must be studied empirically and in context. Therefore, the particularities of Denmark and Sweden as contexts are briefly introduced. Finally, we argue that parenthood must be understood in relation to childhood, and the doing of good parenthood must be situated in relation to notions of children’s interests and rights. Therefore, the book is anchored in the research fields of both parenting studies and child studies.

  • Teenagers, alcohol and sex : doing good parenthood on an on-line discussion board
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Doing good parenthood. - Cham : Palgrave Pivot. - 9783319467733 - 9783319467740 ; , s. 101-112
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Teenagers, sex and alcohol are frequent topics on an online discussion board for Swedish parents. The aim of this study is to analyse how the posters to the discussion board do good parenthood by discussing parental strategies in relation to teenagers, alcohol and sex. The topics of alcohol and sex are chosen because they serve well to address the tension between a teenager’s entitlement to autonomy over decisions concerning her/his own body and parents’ responsibility for ensuring the well-being and socialisation of their child. The analysis shows that, despite considerable differences in the parenting strategies proposed by posters, there are two overarching ideals for good parenthood: the ideal of not taking the easy route as a parent and the ideal of the well-being of the teenager as the primary concern when placing restrictions on teenagers’ behaviour.

  • Time for good parenthood : a study of intercountry adoption assessment
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Doing good parenthood. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783319467733 ; , s. 17-27
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to explore how parents’ opinions and actions related to time are presented in intercountry adoption assessment reports concerning applicants who have been granted consent to adopt. As these reports establish what is required for someone to be categorised as a suitable parent, they construct and display the moral order of parenthood. An analysis of statements about time, as it relates to parental leave, working hours, preschool hours, family activities, leisure time and hobbies, illustrates how meanings of good parenthood are discursively produced. Good parents make time for, and spend time with, their children. They invest in togetherness by exchanging time of lesser value for time of greater value. This officially sanctioned understanding of good parenthood corresponds with the cultural norm of involved, devoted and child-centred parents, and reinforces the romanticised image of quality time and togetherness in the lives of nuclear families.

  • The ontological choreography of (good) parenthood : Ideal and Practices of Parental Involvement
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Doing Good Parenthood. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783319467733 - 9783319467740 ; , s. 113-125
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to unpack the notion of family togetherness as constitutive of good parenthood during visits to child cultural establishments like amusement parks, theme parks and children’s museums. The analyses challenge earlier assumptions of intensive family togetherness – such as closeness, spending time together and cohesion – by showing how togetherness is being done through the interdependence of proximity and distance. The study illustrates how good parenthood is made up of heterogeneous material and non-material entities such as patience, waiting, trust, wallets, mobile phones, age and the like; what is here called “the ontological choreography of (good) parenthood”. The article draws on theories of doing family, making parents and family practice.
