  • Time and wavelength resolved spectroscopy of turbid media using light continuum generated in a crystal fiber
  • 2004
  • record:In_t: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 12:17, s. 4103-4112
  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • We report a novel system for time-resolved diffuse remission spectral measurements, based on short light continuum pulses generated in an index-guided crystal fiber, and a spectrometer-equipped streak camera. The system enables spectral recordings of absorption and reduced scattering coefficients of turbid media in the wavelength range 500 - 1200 nm with a spectral resolution of 5 nm and a temporal resolution of 30 ps. The optical properties are calculated by fitting the solution of the diffusion equation to the time-dispersion curve at each wavelength. Example measurements are presented from an apple, a finger and a pharmaceutical tablet. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America.

  • Two-stage design method for realization of photonic bandgap structures with desired symmetries by interference lithography
  • 2004
  • record:In_t: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 12:6, s. 978-983
  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • Interference lithography for the fabrication of photonic crystals is considered. A two-stage design method for realization of photonic bandgap structures with desired symmetries is developed. An optimal photonic crystal with a large bandgap is searched by adjusting some parameters while keeping some basic symmetry of the unit cell unchanged. A nonlinear programming method is then used to find the optimal electric field vectors of the laser beams and realize the desired interference pattern. The present method is useful for a rational and systematical design of new photonic bandgap structures.

  • Communication modes applied to axicons
  • 2004
  • record:In_t: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 12:3, s. 377-383
  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • The communication modes, which constitute a convenient method for the propagation and information analysis of optical fields, are formulated in the generalized axicon geometry. The transmitting region is the axicon’s annular aperture, and the observation domain is the optical axis containing the focal line segment. We show that in rotational symmetry one may employ the prolate spheroidal wave functions to represent the communication modes. Further, in usual circumstances the modes can be approximated by quadratic waves in the aperture domain and by sinc functions in the image domain. Both the exact communication modes and the approximate technique are confirmed numerically, with linear axicons as examples.

  • High-peak power nanosecond optical parametric amplifier with periodically poled KTP
  • 2003
  • record:In_t: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 11:11, s. 1297-1302
  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • A two-stage optical parametric amplifier generating 5 ns 208 kW peak power pulses in the spectral region at 1.535 mum in a diffraction-limited beam was realized in a single periodically poled KTP crystal. The maximum small-signal gain for the two stages reached 75dB and the total conversion efficiency was 30%. An analysis of the small-signal gain dependence on the M-2 of the pump beam is presented for the collinear and noncollinear OPA. Efficient spectral broadening of the signal was demonstrated in short pieces of single-mode telecommunication fiber.

  • In-situ visualization, monitoring and analysis of electric field domain reversal process in ferroelectric crystals by digital holography
  • 2004
  • record:In_t: Optics express. - 1094-4087. ; 12:9, s. 1832-1842
  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • In-situ monitoring of domain reversal in congruent lithium niobate by a digital holographic technique is described. While the ferroelectric polarization is reversed by electric field poling, the two-dimensional distribution of the phase shift, due mainly to the linear electro-optic and piezoelectric effects, is measured and visualized. Digital holography is used to reconstruct both amplitude and phase of the wavefield transmitted by the sample to reveal the phase shift induced by adjacent reversed domains during the poling. The resulting movies of both amplitude and phase maps, for in-situ visualization of domain pattern formation, are shown. The possibility of using the technique as tool for monitoring in real-time the periodic poling of patterned samples is discussed.

  • Investigation on reversed domain structures in lithium niobate crystals patterned by interference lithography
  • 2003
  • record:In_t: Optics express. - 1094-4087. ; 11, s. 392-
  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • We demonstrate fabrication of periodically poled lithium niobate samples by electric field poling, after patterning by interference lithography. Furthermore we investigate the poling process at an overpoling regime which caused the appearance of submicron dot domains very similar to those induced by backswitch but different in nature. We show the possibility for realizing submicron-scaled three-dimensional domain patterns that could be applied to the construction of photonic crystals and in nonlinear optics. We show that high etch-rate applied to such structures allows to obtain pyramidal-like submicron relief structures which in principle could find application for waveguide construction in photonic bandgap devices

  • Visualization of optical deflection and switching operations by a domain-engineered-based LiNbO electro-optic device
  • 2003
  • record:In_t: Optics express. - 1094-4087. ; 11, s. 1212-
  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • An electro-optic device applied as an optical beam deflector and switch at different wavelengths has been built and tested. The electro-optic device is based on domain-engineered lithium niobate (LiNbO3). In this paper, for the first time, its operation has been visualized by an imaging camera. The device has been characterized both at the visible wavelength (632.8 nm) and at a typical telecom wavelength (1532 nm). Furthermore, the device has been tested as an amplitude modulator in the mid-infrared region as well, at a wavelength of similar to4.3 mum, where no Pockels cells are available. A detailed description of this device is given, and the experimental results are discussed.

  • Whole optical wavefields reconstruction by digital holography
  • 2001
  • record:In_t: Optics express. - 1094-4087. ; 9:6, s. 294-302
  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • n this paper, we have investigated on the potentialities of digital holography for whole reconstruction of wavefields. We show that this technique can be efficiently used for obtaining quantitative information from the intensity and the phase distributions of the reconstructed field at different locations along the propagation direction. The basic concept and procedure of wavefield reconstruction for digital in-line holography is discussed. Numerical reconstructions of the wavefield from digitally recorded in-line hologram patterns and from simulated test patterns are presented. The potential of the method for analysing aberrated wave front has been exploited by applying the reconstruction procedure to astigmatic hologram patterns.

  • Generation of turquoise light by sum-frequency mixing of a diode-pumped solid-state laser and a laser diode in periodically poled PPKTP
  • 2004
  • record:In_t: Optics expresss. - 1094-4087. ; 12, s. 4935-4940
  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • We report a simple and efficient method to achieve visible light by sum-frequency mixing radiation from a diode-pumped solid-state laser and a laser diode in a periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystal. Since high-power laser diodes are available at a wide range of wavelengths, it is thereby possible to obtain essentially any wavelength in the visible spectrum by appropriate choice of lasers. For demonstration we choose to construct a light source in the blue-green region. A turquoise output power of 4.0 mW was achieved.

  • Diamond micro-optics: microlenses and antireflection structured surfaces for the infrared spectral region
  • 2003
  • record:In_t: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 11:5, s. 502-507
  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • Fabrication and evaluation of a subwavelength grating in diamond, designed to reduce the Fresnel reflection, is demonstrated. The antireflection (AR) structures are designed to reduce the surface reflection at an illuminating wavelength of 10.6 µm. With this AR-treatment, where no other material is introduced (i.e., no thin film coating), the unique properties of diamond can be fully used. The fabricated AR structures were optically evaluated with a spectrophotometer. The transmission through a diamond substrate with AR structures on both sides was increased from 71% to 97%, with a theoretical value of 99%. Microlenses in diamond are also demonstrated. The lenses are evaluated with interferometers and show good performance. The micro-optical structures were fabricated by electron-beam lithography or photolithographic methods followed by plasma etching.
