  • 1D photonic band formation and photon localization in finite-size photonic-crystal waveguides
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: OPTICS EXPRESS. - 1094-4087. ; 18:1, s. 117-122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A transition from discrete optical modes to 1D photonic bands is experimentally observed and numerically studied in planar photonic-crystal (PhC) L-N microcavities of length N. For increasing N the confined modes progressively acquire a well-defined momentum, eventually reconstructing the band dispersion of the corresponding waveguide. Furthermore, photon localization due to disorder is observed experimentally in the membrane PhCs using spatially resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Implications on single-photon sources and transfer lines based on quasi-1D PhC structures are discussed.

  • Design of invisibility cloaks with an open tunnel
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 18:26, s. 27060-27066
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we apply the methodology of transformation optics for design of a novel invisibility cloak which can possess an open tunnel. Such a cloak facilitates the insertion (retrieval) of matter into (from) the cloak's interior without significantly affecting the cloak's performance, overcoming the matter exchange bottleneck inherent to most previously proposed cloak designs. We achieve this by applying a transformation which expands a point at the origin in electromagnetic space to a finite area in physical space in a highly anisotropic manner. The invisibility performance of the proposed cloak is verified by using full-wave finite-element simulations. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

  • UV laser interaction with a fluorescent dye solution studied using pulsed digital holography
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 21:21, s. 25316-25323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A frequency tripled Q-switched Nd-YAG laser (wavelength 355 nm, pulse duration 12 ns) has been used to pump Coumarin 153 dye solved in ethanol. Simultaneously, a frequency doubled pulse (532 nm) from the same laser is used to probe the solvent perpendicularly resulting in a gain through stimulated laser induced fluorescence (LIF) emission. The resulting gain of the probe beam is recorded using digital holography by blending it with a reference beam on the detector. Two digital holograms without and with the pump beam were recorded. Intensity maps were calculated from the recorded digital holograms and used to calculate the gain of the probe beam due to the stimulated LIF. In addition numerical data of the local temperature rise was calculated from the corresponding phase maps using Radon inversion. It was concluded that about 15% of the pump beam energy is transferred to the dye solution as heat while the rest is consumed in the radiative process. The results show that pulsed digital holography is a promising technique for quantitative study of fluorescent species

  • An apodized SOI waveguide-to-fiber surface grating coupler for single lithography silicon photonics
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 19:4, s. 3592-3598
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a grating for coupling between a single mode silica fiber and the TE mode in a silicon photonic waveguide on a silicon on insulator (SOI) substrate. The grating is etched completely through the silicon device layer, thus permitting the fabrication of through-etched surface coupled silicon nanophotonic circuits in a single lithography step. Furthermore, the grating is apodized to match the diffracted wave to the mode profile of the fiber. We experimentally demonstrate a coupling efficiency of 35% with a 1 dB bandwidth of 47 nm at 1536 nm on a standard SOI substrate. Furthermore, we show by simulation that with an optimized buried oxide thickness, a coupling efficiency of 72% and a 1 dB bandwidth of 38 nm at 1550 nm is achievable. This is, to our knowledge, the highest simulated coupling efficiency for single-etch TE-mode grating couplers. In particular, simulations show that apodizing a conventional periodic through-etched grating decreases the back-reflection into the waveguide from 21% to 0.1%.

  • A simple model for the resonance shift of localized plasmons due to dielectric particle adhesion
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 20:1, s. 524-533
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultrasensitive detectors based on localized surface plasmonresonance refractive index sensing are capable of detecting very lownumbers of molecules for biochemical analysis. It is well known that thesensitivity of such sensors crucially depend on the spatial distribution ofthe electromagnetic field around the metal surface. However, the preciseconnection between local field enhancement and resonance shift is seldomdiscussed. Using the quasistatic approximation, we developed a model thatrelates the sensitivity of a nanoplasmonic resonator to the local field inwhich the analyte is placed. The model, corroborated by finite-differencetime-domain simulations, may be used to estimate the magnitude of theshift as a function of the properties of the sensed object – permittivity andvolume – and its location on the surface of the resonator. It requires onlya computation of the resonant field induced by the metal structure and istherefore suitable for numerical optimization of nanoplasmonic sensors.

  • Efficient light management in vertical nanowire arrays for photovoltaics
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 21:9, s. 558-575
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vertical arrays of direct band gap III-V semiconductor nanowires (NWs) hold the prospect of cheap and efficient next-generation photovoltaics, and guidelines for successful light-management are needed. Here, we use InP NWs as a model system and find, through electrodynamic modeling, general design principles for efficient absorption of sun light in nanowire arrays by systematically varying the nanowire diameter, the nanowire length, and the array period. Most importantly, we discover the existence of specific band-gap dependent diameters, 170 nm and 410 nm for InP, for which the absorption of sun light in the array is optimal, irrespective of the nanowire length. At these diameters, the individual InP NWs of the array absorb light strongly for photon energies just above the band gap energy due to a diameter-tunable nanophotonic resonance, which shows up also for other semiconductor materials of the NWs. Furthermore, we find that for maximized absorption of sun light, the optimal period of the array increases with nanowire length, since this decreases the insertion reflection losses. • Time-resolved protein nanocrystallography using an X-ray free-electron laser
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 20:3, s. 2706-2716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate the use of an X-ray free electron laser synchronized with an optical pump laser to obtain X-ray diffraction snapshots from the photoactivated states of large membrane protein complexes in the form of nanocrystals flowing in a liquid jet. Light-induced changes of Photosystem I-Ferredoxin co-crystals were observed at time delays of 5 to 10 µs after excitation. The result correlates with the microsecond kinetics of electron transfer from Photosystem I to ferredoxin. The undocking process that follows the electron transfer leads to large rearrangements in the crystals that will terminally lead to the disintegration of the crystals. We describe the experimental setup and obtain the first time-resolved femtosecond serial X-ray crystallography results from an irreversible photo-chemical reaction at the Linac Coherent Light Source. This technique opens the door to time-resolved structural studies of reaction dynamics in biological systems.

  • Comprehensive analysis of electrically-pumped GaSb-based VCSELs
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 19:18, s. 17267-17282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses several performance-related aspects of electrically-pumped GaSb-based buried tunnel junction VCSELs with an emission wavelength of 2.6 mu m based on theoretical and experimental results. These results allow a deeper insight into the internal device physics, such as radial diffusion of carriers, maximum continuous-wave operating temperature, diffraction loss, internal temperature, gain and loss parameters, internal quantum efficiency of the active region etc. These parameters can be taken into account while designing mid-infrared lasers which leads to an improved device performance. A simple thermal model of the devices based on the two-dimensional (2-D) finite element method using the material data from the literature is also presented. In addition, an application-based result utilizing these lasers for the measurement of absolute water vapor concentration by wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) method are also described, hinting that devices are well-suited for the targeted sensing applications.
