  • Attractive Systems for Bioenergy Feedstock Production in Sustainably Managed Landscapes– Contributions to the Call

    • Task 43 launched an initiative to identify attractive examples of landscape management and design for bioenergy and the bioeconomy. The aim of this initiative to catalogue and highlight world-wide examples of biomass production systems, throughout all stages of production, that can contribute positively to biodiversity and the generation of other ecosystem services. Information about biomass production systems and their impacts, as well as information about governance and policy initiatives that encourage adoptions of solutions leading to positive outcomes are welcomed. The goal of this initiative is to compile innovative examples as a means of showcasing how the production of biomass for bioenergy can generate positive impacts in agriculture and forestry landscapes. These examples are also meant to serve as sources of inspiration that other biomass producers can use to enhance the sustainability of their own activities. All contributions that are within scope and meet the set quality requirement are included in this Report. Selected contributions will be invited to submit a manuscript for a Special Collection in the peer review journal WIREs Energy and Environment, published by Wiley.

    • Agroforestry and other types of multifunctional land-use systems have increasingly been highlighted as win-win-win solutions to meet the challenges of climate change, agricultural intensification, secure ecosystem services as well as support to food security. In this brief the authors seek in the literature for evidence and information on the food security link to homegardens; a traditional agroforestry system common in Sri Lanka, and promoted by the Sri Lankan government .

    • The study focuses on investigation and evaluation of wind- thrown forest mapping using satellite remotely sensed data from three synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors. The study is carried out at Remningstorp, a test site in the south of Sweden dominated by coniferous forest, where trees were manual felled to simulate wind-thrown forest. The satellite data consisted of time series of HH polarized SAR images acquired by the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR), Radarsat-2 (C-band) and TerraSAR-X (X- band). The results from visual interpretation of SAR images acquired before and after the simulated wind-throw together with corresponding ratio images show that ALOS PALSAR HH polarized intensity images are not able to detect wind- thrown forest, probably due to too coarse spatial resolution. In contrast, the wind-thrown forest is clearly visible in the Radarsat-2 and TerraSAR-X HH polarized images, implying that it may be possible to develop a new application using these SAR data for mapping of wind-thrown forests.

  • Carbon stock and tree diversity of dry-zone homegardens in southern Sri Lanka

    • Tropical homegardens hold a large potential for climate change mitigation and adaptation due to their multi-functional role in providing income and ecosystem services while decreasing pressure on natural forests. However, there is still lack of quantitative data on homegardens and their landscape potential for carbon sequestration services. In this study, tree diversity and above-ground biomass carbon of woody species was estimated on dry-zone homegardens in the dry south-eastern part of Sri Lanka. A total of 45 homegardens were sampled on size, floristic composition of trees, diameter at breast height (GBH) and height of trees. In total, 4278 trees were sampled and 82 different tree species were recorded. The Shannon Wiener index used to evaluate biodiversity ranged from 0.76–3.01 with a mean value of 2.05. Using allometric models, we find a mean above-ground biomass stock of 13 Mg carbon (C) ha-1 with a large range among homegardens (1–56 Mg C ha-1, n=45) due to a variation of tree diversity, species and composition between individual homegardens. Per unit area basis, mean above ground carbon stock was higher in small homegardens (<0.2 ha, 26 Mg C ha-1, n=11) than medium (0.4–0.8 ha, 9 Mg C ha-1 n=27) and large (>1 ha, 8 Mg C ha-1, n=7) homegardens due to a higher tree density. The results show a vast heterogeneity in terms of carbon and biological diversity within the dry zone homegardens; results that will contribute to closing the knowledge gap of the less studied dry-zone homegarden systems and their functions in storing carbon and providing multi-functional benefits to its users. The results are also useful for whether homegardens should directly or indirectly be considered to be included as an activity within Sri Lanka’s newly commenced UN-REDD National Programme.

  • Process development for platform chemical production from agricultural and forestry residues

    • As part of a bio-based economy, biorefineries are envisaged to sustainably produce platform chemicals via biochemical conversion of agricultural and forestry residues. However, supply risks, the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass, and inhibitor formation during pre­treatment impair the economic feasibility of such biorefineries. In this thesis, process design and assessment were developed with the aim of addressing these hurdles and improving the cost-effectiveness of lignocellulose-derived platform chemicals. To expand the feedstock base and reduce operational costs, logging residues served as underutilised and inexpensive raw material. The major impediment in converting logging residues was their high recalcitrance and low cellulose content, which resulted in low attainable ethanol titres during simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SSCF). Pretreatment optimisation reduced inhibitor formation and recalcitrance, and led to enzymatic hydrolysis yields at par with those obtained for stem wood, despite the less favourable chemical composition. Upgrading logging residues with carbohydrate-rich oat hulls increased ethanol titres to >50 g/L using batch SSCF at 20% WIS loadings, demonstrating the potential to further decrease downstream processing costs. To alleviate the toxicity of inhibitors generated during pretreatment, preadaptation was applied to Saccharomyces cerevisiae . Exposure to the inhibitors in the pretreated liquid fraction improved ethanol production during subsequent fermentation. Transferring the concept of preadaptation to lactic acid production by Bacillus coagulans cut the process times by half and more than doubled the average specific lactic acid productivity, showcasing how preadaptation could decrease operational costs. To assess the performance and robustness of process designs against process input variations, a multi-scale variability analysis framework was developed. The framework included models for bioprocess, flowsheet, techno-economic, and life cycle assessment. In a case study, multi-feed processes, in which solids and cells are fed to the process using model-based predictions, were more robust against variable cellulolytic activities than batch SSCFs in a wheat straw-based ethanol biorefinery. The developed framework can be used to identify robust biorefinery process designs, which simultaneously meet technological, economic, and environmental goals.
