  • Microwave properties of tunable capacitors basee on magnetron sputtered ferroelectric Na0.5K0.5NbO3 film on low and high resistivity silicon substrates

    • In this work, small signal DC voltage dependent dielectric permittivity, loss tangent, and tuneability of magnetron sputtered epitaxial Na0.5K0.5NO3 films are studied experimentally. (100)-oriented Na0.5K0.5NbO3 films are deposited onto SiO2-buffered CMOS grade low resistivity (p = 10-20 cm) and high resistivity (p = 15-45 kcm) silicon substrates. Planar capacitors with 2 or 4 m gaps between electrodes have been fabricated on top of ferroelectric films. These devices have been characterized in the frequency range 1.0 MHz to 50 GHz at temperatures 30 - 300K. Na0.5K0.5NbO3/SiO2/Si structures on high resistivity silicon substrate exhibit C-V performances typical for Metal-Insulator- Semiconductor (MIS) capacitors. At low frequencies, f 1.0 GHz, the large tuneability and large losses are associated with the MIS structure, while at higher microwave frequencies the tuneability is mainly associated with the ferroelectric, film. At 1.0 MHz and room temperature, the tuneability of Na0.5K0.5NbO3/SiO2/Si structures more than 90%, reducing to 10-15 % at 50 GHz. The losses decrease with increasing the DC bias and frequency. A Q-factor more than 15 at 50 GHz is observed. The dielectric permittivity of the Na0.5K0.5NbO3 film is in the range 50-150 at frequencies 0.045-50 GHz. On low resistivity substrate the performance of Na0.5K0.5NbO3 films is completely screened by the high losses in silicon, and the tuneability is negligible. © 2001 Taylor and Francis.

  • Combining the tactile resonance method and Raman spectroscopy for tissue characterization towards prostate cancer detection
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common male cancer in Europe and the US, and only lung and colorectal cancer have a higher mortality among European men. In Sweden, PCa is the most common cause of cancer-related death for men.The overall aim of this thesis was to explore the need for new and complementary methods for PCa detection and to take the rst step towards a novel approach: combining the tactile resonance method (TRM) and Raman spectroscopy (RS). First, the main methods for PCa detection were reviewed. Second, to establish a robust protocol for RS experiments in vitro, the eects of snap-freezing and laser illumination on porcine prostate tissue were studied using RS and multivariate statistics. Third, measurements on porcine and human tissue were performed to compare the TRM and RS data via multivariate techniques, and to assess the accuracy of classifying healthy and cancerous tissue using a support vector machine algorithm. It was concluded through the literature review that the gold standard for PCa detection and diagnosis, the prostate specic antigen test and systematic biopsy, have low sensitivity and specicity. Indolent and aggressive tumors cannot be reliably dierentiated, and many men are therefore treated either unnecessarily or too late. Clinical benets of the state-of-the-art in PCa imaging - advanced ultrasound and MR techniques - have still not been convincingly shown. There is a need for complementary and cost-eective detection methods. TRM and RS are promising techniques, but hitherto their potential for PCa detection have only been investigated in vitro. In the RS study no evidence of tissue degradation due to 830 nm laser illumination at an irradiance of ∼3 · 1010 W m-2 were found. Snap-freezing and subsequent storage at -80° C gave rise to subtle but signicant changes in Raman spectra, most likely related to alterations in the protein structure. The major changes due to PCa do not seem to be related to the protein structure, hence snap-freezing may be applied in our experiments. The combined measurements on porcine and human prostate tissue showed that RS provided additional discriminatory power to TRM. The classication accuracy for healthy porcine prostate tissue, and for healthy and cancerous human prostate tissue, was > 73%. This shows the power of the support vector machine applied to the combined data.In summary, this work indicates that an instrument combining TRM and RS is a promising complementary method for PCa detection. Snap-freezing of samples may be used in future RS studies of PCa. A combined instrument could be used for tumor-border demarcation during surgery, and potentially for guiding prostate biopsies towards lesions suspicious for cancer. All of this should provide a more secure diagnosis and consequently more effcient treatment of the patient.

  • The progress of GHG markets : opportunities and risks
  • 2010
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The climate negotiations at the COP15 in December 2009 did not produce a new international treaty with binding emissions commitments but the Copenhagen Accord for dealing with post-2012 climate change. Given the current climate negotiation process it is unlikely that we will see a global climate agreement soon on a global cap between all Convention members participating in a single carbon market. We may be more likely to see a stepwise process moving towards this scenario, most likely involving linkages between different national policy programs when it comes to mitigation as well as offsetting emissions. In such a process countries will offer commitments based on their domestic abilities, preferences and policies, norms and institutions. National and sub-national policies are thus likely to be the de-facto building blocks of nations' abilities to make and fulfill international commitments. However, also with multilateral mitigation programs without binding commitments, carbon markets will be needed as well as international authorities that support measurement, reporting and verification rules and the international registries. Such markets will necessarily be complicated and temporary in a world without an overarching binding agreement. There will be numerous tradeoffs between different kinds of second-best arrangements. The purpose of this report is to build knowledge about the effects of the development of regional and international carbon markets and the auxiliary technology agreements that might be needed. Among the topics we address are: the evolution and integration of carbon markets, the impacts of policy and technology cost uncertainty on the cost of meeting targets through a carbon market mechanism, the effect of banking, price floors and ceilings, institutional constraints and technological change in the further development of carbon markets and their links to other environmental policy instruments, and the potential of REDD-plus to encourage sustainable forest development and climate mitigation.
