  • Methane production from feather waste pretreated with Ca(OH)2: Process development and economical analysis
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Waste and Biomass Valorization. - : Springer Netherlands. - 1877-2641 .- 1877-265X. ; 5:1, s. 65-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated the industrial application of feather waste as a substrate for anaerobic digestion. Feather was pretreated with 0–0.2 Ca(OH)2 g/g TSfeather (total solids of feathers) for 30–120 min at 100–120 °C, in order to increase the digestibility, and to enhance the methane yield in a subsequent digestion at 55 °C. Based on the results of the batch digestion, an industrial process was developed, which can achieve 0.40 Nm3/kg VSfeather (volatile solids of feathers) methane yield from the pretreated feathers, while it fulfills the animal by-product hygenization requirements as well. This base case of the industrial pretreatment process was designed using SuperPro Designer® for utilizing 2,500 tons of feathers per year, which is the waste stream from an average slaughterhouse with a capacity of 60,000 broilers per day. The production cost of the methane is estimated to be 0.475 EUR/Nm3, while the investments on the pretreatment unit requires 0.97 million EUR as total capital investment, and 0.25 million EUR/year for operating cost. However, the process is sensitive to the plant capacity. Changing the plant capacity from 625 to 10,000 tons of feather per year, results in reducing the biogas production cost from 1.177 to 0.203 EUR/Nm3. In addition, sensitivity analysis was performed on the base case to investigate the effect of the value of the incoming feather on the overall process profitability. The results showed that the proposed investment could be considered as being financially viable in the case of production of upgraded biomethane even without the current gate fee system.

  • Control systems for improvement of cone crusher yield and operation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Comminution '14.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Gyratory and cone crushers are regaining interest and are becoming more frequently used in order to create more energy efficient comminution circuits. A typical example is found in coarse comminution circuits were HPGRs are used as a first milling stage. In this case the preparation of a suitable feed with a well-defined width of the particle size distribution and a controlled top size are of high importance. In turn, this emphasizes the importance of a stable and controlled operation of the preceding crushing stages. Control systems for cone and gyratory crushers were first introduced during the early 60ths. The common opinion is that if these systems are able to compensate for the wear of the crushing liners the production yield can be increased with 20-25%. Over the years these types of systems have been widely used but the theory behind the principles have not been thoroughly scientifically scrutinized and presented. Of special interest is the capability to protect the crushers from long term overloading commonly defined as fatigue. With developments in electronics and plant control the crusher control systems have become more refined over the years. Though, there are sometimes conflicting interests in the control strategies between process requirements and crusher protection. In the paper an overview of the challenges, opportunities and existing control systems for cone and gyratory crushers is presented. A requirement specification for a system that is possible to fully integrate into modern plant control systems is outlined.

  • Textile piezoelectric sensors – melt spun bi-component poly(vinylidene fluoride) fibres with conductive cores and poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) coating as the outer electrode
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Fashion and Textiles. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2198-0802. ; 1:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The work presented here addresses the outer electroding of a fully textile piezoelectric strain sensor, consisting of bi-component fibre yarns of β-crystalline poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) sheath and conductive high density polyethylene (HDPE)/carbon black (CB) core as insertions in a woven textile, with conductive poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) coatings developed for textile applications. Two coatings, one with a polyurethane binder and one without, were compared for the application and evaluated as electrode material in piezoelectric testing, as well as tested for surface resistivity, tear strength, abrasion resistance and shear flexing. Both coatings served their function as the outer electrodes in the system and no difference in this regard was detected between them. Omission of the binder resulted in a surface resistivity one order of magnitude less, of 12.3 Ω/square, but the surface resistivity of these samples increased more upon abrasion than the samples coated with binder. The tear strength of the textile coated with binder decreased with one third compared to the uncoated substrate, whereas the tear strength of the coated textile without binder increased with the same amount. Surface resistivity measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the samples subjected to shear flexing showed that the coatings without the binder did not withstand this treatment, and that the samples with the binder managed this to a greater extent. In summary, both of the PEDOT:PSS coatings could be used as outer electrodes of the piezoelectric fibres, but inclusion of binder was found necessary for the durability of the coating.

  • Ethanol production from alkali-pretreated oil palm empty fruit bunch by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation with mucor indicus
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Green Energy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1543-5075 .- 1543-5083. ; 13:6, s. 566-572
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) is a potential raw material for production of lignocellulosic bioethanol. The OPEFB was pretreated with 8% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution at 100°C for 10 to 90 min. Enzymatic digestion was carried out using cellulase and β-glucosidase at 45°C for 24 h. It was then inoculated with Mucor indicus spores suspension and fermented under anaerobic conditions at 37°C for 96 h. Sodium hydroxide pretreatment effectively removed 51–57% of lignin in the OPEFB and also its hemicellulose (40–84%). The highest glucan digestibility (0.75 g/g theoretical glucose) was achieved in 40-min NaOH pretreatment. Fermentation by M. indicus resulted in 68.4% of the theoretical ethanol yield, while glycerol (16.2–83.2 mg/g), succinic acid (0–0.4 mg/g), and acetic acid (0–0.9 mg/g) were its by-products. According to these results, 11.75 million tons of dry OPEFB in Indonesia can be converted into 1.5 billion liters of ethanol per year.

  • Inhibitory Effect of Long-Chain Fatty Acids on Biogas Production and the Protective Effect of Membrane Bioreactor
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: BioMed Research International. - : Hindawi Limited. - 2314-6133 .- 2314-6141. ; 2016:ID:7263974, s. 9 pages-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anaerobic digestion of lipid-containing wastes for biogas production is often hampered by the inhibitory effect of long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs). In this study, the inhibitory effects of LCFAs (palmitic, stearic, and oleic acid) on biogas production as well as the protective effect of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) against LCFAs were examined in thermophilic batch digesters. The results showed that palmitic and oleic acid with concentrations of 3.0 and 4.5 g/L resulted in >50% inhibition on the biogas production, while stearic acid had an even stronger inhibitory effect. The encased cells in the MBR system were able to perform better in the presence of LCFAs. This system exhibited a significantly lower percentage of inhibition than the free cell system, not reaching over 50% at any LCFA concentration tested.

  • Improving Yield and Shape in a Crushing Plant
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 12th European Symposium on Comminution and Classification (ESCC2009).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is increasing demand to optimise yield and increase capacity of crushing plants. Research in this area has resulted in the development of numerous optimisation tools, and resent research has shown that the quality aspects of production have great influence on the optimisation results. The quality and capacity of a product is influenced by several parameters, and in order to control all these parameters it is necessary to use some sort of optimisation software. In this paper, a novel approach to analyse parameters influence on product capacity and quality is presented. As an example a cone crusher and a vertical shaft impact crusher (VSI) is simulated in a tertiary stage. The simulation shows how capacity and product quality for a range of products will be affected when a parameter is changed. The paper also shows how wear will affect product capacity and quality.

  • Classification of Underlying Causes of Power Quality Disturbances: Deterministic versus Statistical Methods
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Eurasip Journal on Applied Signal Processing. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1110-8657 .- 1687-0433. ; 2007, s. 17 pages (Article ID 79747)-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the two main types of classification methods for power quality disturbances based on underlying causes: deterministic classification, giving an expert system as an example, and statistical classification, with support vector machines as an example. An expert system is suitable when one has limited amount of data and sufficient power system expert knowledge, however its application requires a set of threshold values. Statistical methods are suitable when large amount of data is available for training. Two important issues to guarantee the effectiveness of a classifier, data segmentation and featureextraction, are discussed. Segmentation of a sequence of data recording is pre-processing to partition the datainto segments each representing a duration containing either an event or transition between two events. Extraction of features is applied to each segment individually. Some useful features and their effectiveness are then discussed. Some experimental results are included for demonstrating theeffectiveness of both systems. Finally, conclusions are given together with the discussion of some future research directions.

  • Effects of Heavy Metals and pH on the Conversion of Biomass to Hydrogen via Syngas Fermentation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: BioResources. - : BioResources. - 1930-2126. ; 13:2, s. 4455-4469
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of three heavy metals on hydrogen production via syngas fermentation were investigated within a metal concentration range of 0 to 1.5 mg Cu/L, 0 to 9 mg Zn/L, 0 to 42 mg Mn/L, in media with initial pH of 5, 6, and 7, at 55 degrees C. The results showed that at lower metal concentration, pH 6 was optimum while at higher metal concentrations, pH 5 stimulated the process. More specifically, the highest hydrogen production activity recorded was 155% +/- 12% at a metal concentration of 0.04 mg Cu/L, 0.25 mg Zn/L, and 1.06 mg Mn/L and an initial medium pH of 6. At higher metal concentration (0.625 mg Cu/L, 3.75 mg Zn/L, and 17.5 mg Mn/L), only pH 5 was stimulating for the cells. The results showed that the addition of heavy metals, contained in gasification-derived ash, can improve the production rate and yield of fermentative hydrogen. This could lead to lower costs in gasification process and fermentative hydrogen production and less demand for syngas cleaning before syngas fermentation.

  • Understanding Mineral Liberation during Crushing Using Grade-by-Size Analysis - A Case Study of the Penuota Sn-Ta Mineralization, Spain
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Minerals. - : MDPI AG. - 2075-163X. ; 10:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coarse comminution test-work and modeling are powerful tools in the design and optimization of mineral processing plants and provide information on energy consumption. Additional information on mineral liberation characteristics can be used for assessing the potential of pre-concentration stages or screens in the plant design. In ores of high-value metals (e.g., Ta, W), standard techniques-such as the mineralogical quantification of grain mounts by quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) or chemical analysis by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) can be challenging, due to the low relative abundance of such valuable minerals. The cost of QEMSCAN is also a limiting factor, especially considering the large number of samples required for the optimization of coarse comminution. In this study, we present an extended analytical protocol to a well-established mechanical test of interparticle breakage to improve the assessment of coarse mineral liberation characteristics. The liberation of ore minerals is a function of the rock texture and the difference in size and mechanical properties of the valuable minerals relative to gangue minerals and they may fraction in certain grain sizes if they behave differently during comminution. By analyzing the bulk-chemistry of the different grain size fractions produced after compressional testing, and by generating element by size diagrams, it is possible to understand the liberation characteristics of an ore. We show, based on a case study performed on a tantalum ore deposit, that element distribution can be used to study the influence of mechanical parameters on mineral liberation. This information can direct further mineralogical investigation and test work.

  • Performance of the Load-in-the-Loop Single Op-Amp Voltage Controlled Current Source from the Op-Amp Parameters
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : Institute of Physics Publishing Ltd.. - 1742-6596 .- 1742-6588.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, Electrical Bioimpedance (EBI) methods have gained importance. These methods are often based on obtaining impedance spectrum in the range of β-dispersion, i.e. from a few kHz up to some MHz. To measure EBI a constant current is often injected and the voltage across the tissue under study (TUS) is recorded. Due to the performance of the current source influences the performance of the entire system, in terms of frequency range, several designs have been implemented and studied. In this paper the basic structure of a Voltage-Controlled Current Source (VCCS) based on a single Op-Amp in inverter configuration with a floating load, known as load-in-the-loop current source, is revisited and studied deeply. We focus on the dependence of the output impedance with the circuit parameters, i.e. the feedback resistor and the inverter-input resistor, and the Op-Amp main parameters, i.e. open loop gain, CMRR and input impedance. After obtaining the experimental results and comparing to the theoretical and simulated ones, they confirm the design under study can be a good solution for multi-frequency wideband EBI applications because of higher values of the output impedance than 100kΩ at 1MHz are obtained. Furthermore, an enhancement of the basic design, using a current conveyor as a first stage, is proposed, studied and implemented.
