- In this full paper on innovative practice, we describe and discuss findings from dual degree study programmes that combine a master's degree in engineering with a master's degree in education. This innovative study programme design has emerged in Sweden due to an alarming demand for more Upper Secondary School teachers in STEM subjects. Studies on alumni from these programmes indicate that the graduates are highly appreciated not only as teachers in schools, but also in business and industry, e.g. in roles as IT consultants and computer science engineers. Data indicate that the breadth of the combined education, and especially leadership and pedagogical skills, are important factors for these graduates' success as engineers.

- The distortion from amplitude and phase imbalance in outphasing amplifiers is discussed. The relation between dynamic range (DR) and suppression of distortion is shown to approximately follow a simple linear relationship depending on the DR. Approximate relations between adjacent channel leakage power ratio (ACLR) for different kinds of commonly used communication signals and two-tone intermodulation distortion are given. Relations between loss in output power and reduction of DR as functions of duty cycle in switching-based outphasing amplifiers are also given. An approximate method to evaluate the possible performance of digital pre-distortion (DPD) is also given by considering a DPD capable of correcting all distortions except amplitude imbalance. The predicted performance is compared to the performance obtained using a DPD-model found in the literature. The results show that the method is in good agreement, demonstrating that the proposed method can be used for design and evaluation of predistorted outphasing amplifiers.

- We consider a three-dimensional model for a myelinated neuron, which includes Hodgkin–Huxley ordinary differential equations to represent membrane dynamics at Ranvier nodes (unmyelinated areas). Assuming a periodic microstructure with alternating myelinated and unmyelinated parts, we use homogenization methods to derive a one-dimensional nonlinear cable equation describing the potential propagation along the neuron. Since the resistivity of intracellular and extracellular domains is much smaller than the myelin resistivity, we assume this last one to be a perfect insulator and impose homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions on the myelin boundary. In contrast to the case when the conductivity of the myelin is nonzero, no additional terms appear in the one-dimensional limit equation, and the model geometry affects the limit solution implicitly through an auxiliary cell problem used to compute the effective coefficient. We present numerical examples revealing the forecasted dependence of the effective coefficient on the size of the Ranvier node.

Exploring technology paths: The development of alternative transport fuels in Sweden 2005-2020

- In this paper we use a socio-technical scenario approach to illustrate how the development of alternative transport fuels in Sweden can be influenced by different policy choices. With the present situation as a starting point, we introduce different feasible scenarios for the development of alternative transport fuels in Sweden from 2005-2020. The scenario policies differ mainly on two points: (i) the commitment and economic incentives aiming at a rapid introduction of existing alternative transport fuels and (ii) the economic resources allocated to R&D of new, more efficient alternatives. The main focus on the first point in our market-oriented scenario and on the second in our technology-oriented scenario has implications for the development of the stocks and structures of the socio-techno-environmental system (STE-system).A first phase in the development is seen between 2005 and 2010. In the market-oriented scenario, a domestic production and a relatively widespread use of alternative transport fuels create advocates for these alternatives among producers and users. Limited explicit knowledge is gained, but legitimacy for alternatives to petrol and diesel is created. Physical artefacts are adjusted to the present alternative fuels, which are more similar to petrol and diesel than to new alternatives. In the technology-oriented scenario authorities and researchers are key actors. A high technical competence is built up in connection with pilot production plants for new alternative fuels. Both petrol and diesel are questioned, while the early alternatives are criticised for being too costly and having limited potential. A second phase, between 2011 and 2020, begins with a bifurcation of both scenarios, where one path from each is characterised by stagnation and one from each is characterised by growth, with regard to the potential for large-scale introduction of biofuels or other renewable fuels in Sweden.Our four scenarios, ending in 2020, can be seen as somewhat extreme examples of feasible outcomes resulting from policy choices made today. Numerous stocks and structures within the STE-system are affected and interact, to determine further changes of the system. In the market-oriented scenario, we illustrate consequences of breaking the dominance of entrenched technologies and demonstrating a growing market potential for alternative fuels and vehicles, while we in the technology-oriented scenario point out the value of keeping variety among niches at the early stage of a transition. The latter may add to the capability to respond to exogenous shifts in a way that is beneficial for the transition.

- This paper proposes a behavioral model structure for outphasing amplifiers. The model performance is evaluated on a class-D CMOS outphasing amplifier and compared with two models found in the literature. The proposed model structure also allows the use of memory in a parallel Hammerstein-like setting. The proposed models show improvements in adjacent channel error power ratio (ACEPR) of approximately 5 dB in addition to being linear in the parameters. The lower model errors enable the use and design of improved predistorters taking frequency dependency (memory effects) in outphasing amplifiers into account.

- The performance of power amplifier behavioral models depends strongly on the performance of the system used to measure the amplifiers. In this study two different systems with nonlinear measurement capability are used to model a commercially available PA. One system is a large-signal network analyzer (LSNA) and the second system is a modulation-domain system (MDS) consisting of a vector signal generator and a vector signal analyzer. The PA was tested with multitone and WCDMA signals and behavioral models were extracted from the measured data. The evaluation criteria normalized mean square error and weighted error spectral power ratio or adjacent channel error power ratio were then computed to compare the performance of the models from the two systems. Cross-validation between the systems, using data from one system to obtain the model and validating its performance with data from the other system, shows that the model performance is mainly affected by the used validation data. Validating the performance of models from the LSNA with data from the MDS indicates that the identified models have almost the same performance as the MDS-identified models, i.e. it does not matter which system is used to identify the models. Cross-validation using a WCDMA-signal and multitone signal from the different systems shows that the normalized mean square error is mainly affected by modeling imperfections introduced by using another signal type. WESPR and ACEPR show a certain difference in performance with somewhat lower values for the MDS. The behavior of the two systems can be explained by different noise levels.
