An experiment of using non-rigid falsework in construction of brick vaults

- This video is showing an experiment that was performed to evaluate the possibility of using flexible, or non-rigid, falsework for formfound arches and vaults. Traditionally falsework are made from stiff templates out of wood but for complex shapes this might require expensive CNC machines. The video is showing the preparatory work for a workshop at crafts school, Dacapo, in Mariestad in 2016, where students were to be learning traditional crafts but also a test to see how digital tools could be incorporated in crafts. The falsework was made from plastic tubes which were measured to make the right cut lengths and connections based on a digital model which was generated based on a gravitational load. For a small vault like this the capacity and stability of the plastic tubes was sufficient, but for larger shells or vaults more calculations and investigations are needed.

- This video is capturing the interior and exterior of the Boston Public Library designed by Mckim, Meade and White and built by the The Guastavino Fireproof Construction Company in 1895. The Guastavino Fireproof Construction Company specialized in loadbearing masonry structures and would build many iconic building in the United States from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century such as Registry Hall at Ellis Island, New York (1917) and City Hall Subway Station, New York(1904). Fabrication and assembly of an actively bent plywood geodesic gridshell - Student workshop, 2017

- This video documents a two-day workshop that was performed in the course Digital tools - Parametric design where the students built a geodesic gridshell structure. The video shows the fabrication and assembly procedure in detail for the different parts of the structure. Utilizing a geodesic grid design, that is curves whose curvature vector is parallel with the surface normal, the gridshell was made of straight predrilled plywood laths that was bent and locked into shape using a sequential erection method. The workshop was organised as a collaboration between the Architecture and Engineering research group at Chalmers University, Buro Happold Engineering, BIG architects and Core Studios at Thornton Tomasetti. - This video is capturing the exterior and interior environment of the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona. The hospital was built between 1902 and 1930 and was designed by the modernista architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The modernista complex consisting of many pavilions show some impressive masonry vaults clad with tiles in various patterns. L'Oceanogràfic - Félix Candela

- This video is capturing the concrete shell structure by Felix Candela at Oceanographic in Valencia. The structure was designed quite close to his passing in 1997. The structure is very similar to Candela's the Los Manantiales Restaurant, built in Mexico City in the 1950s. The structure is made from four hyperbolic paraboloids intersecting each-other, creating this octagonal shape in plan. The hyperbolic paraboloid is a "doubly ruled" surface meaning that one can describe these surfaces through straight lines. This can be very beneficial in designing the form-work for complex shapes like this one using straight wooden planks. - This video is capturing the interior hall, usually closed, of St. Patrick's church, Philadelphia, built by the Guastavino Fireproof Construction Company in 1911 and designed by the firm LaFarge and Morris. The hall consists of a series of masonry domes tiled in the trademark fishbone pattern of Guastavino. The Guastavino Fireproof Construction Company specialized in loadbearing masonry structures and would build many iconic building in the United States from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century such as Registry Hall at Ellis Island, New York (1917) and City Hall Subway Station, New York(1904).
