  • Additive Manufacturing of Slow-Moving Automotive Spare Parts: A Supply Chain Cost Assessment
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing. - : MDPI AG. - 2504-4494. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study develops a cost model for the additive manufacturing (AM)-produced spare parts supply chain in the automotive industry. Moreover, we evaluate the economic feasibility of AM for slow-moving automotive spare parts by comparing the costs of the traditional manufacturing (TM) spare parts supply chain (SPSC) with centralized, outsourced AM SPSC. Data from a multiple case study of an OEM in the automotive industry regarding SPSC is utilized. The supply chain costs of 14 individual spare parts were analyzed, and the total SPSC cost for the AM and TM, were compared. Three of the fourteen parts showed potential for cost-savings, if they were produced with AM instead of TM. In this context, AM polymer parts showed greater potential than metal to replace TM as the more economical option of manufacturing from a total supply chain cost perspective. This study shows that the AM competitiveness to TM, from a financial perspective, increases for spare parts with low demand, high minimum order quantity, and high TM production price. The SPSC cost model included: cost of production, transport, warehousing, and service costs. This study contributes to the emerging field of part identification for AM and the existing literature regarding cost modeling in SPSCs.

  • Towards Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) Integration
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Nofoma Conference 2021.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Sales and operations planning (S&OP) is a tactical level planning process between the demand and supply as well as other functions in an organization. The aim of the paper is to identify and analyze interfaces in S&OP and to conceptualize and explore integration in those interfaces. Design/methodology/approach: The paper builds on literature on integration and its mechanisms in S&OP and adopts a qualitative and explorative research approach. Two companies with established S&OP processes were selected as cases and interviews were conducted with managers in positions having an overview of the process. Findings: Based on the analysis of the two case companies, eight different interfaces were identified in the two case companies. The interfaces were analysed with regard to which mechanisms used to reach integration. Coordination stands out as the most important mechanism, which is facilitated by process, organisation, and technology. Research limitations/implications: The paper starts to conceptualize S&OP integration at the interface level. Based on the case analysis of individual interfaces, initial understanding of how coordination, collaboration, and alignment results in integration was created. The paper ends by raising future research questions regarding S&OP integration. Practical implications: Managers involved in S&OP are involved daily in the interfaces. This paper add knowledge on which mechanisms to use to integrate interfaces. Original/value: Based on identifying a range of interfaces to be integrated in a well-functioning S&OP, this paper starts a discussion of the meaning of integration in S&OP in relation to individual interfaces as well as cross interfaces.

  • Does organization structure matter? : On the relationship between the structure, functioning and effectiveness
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Technology Management (IJITM). - London : World Scientific Publishing (UK) Ltd. - 0219-8770 .- 1793-6950. ; 3:3, s. 237-263
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Managers often see new organizational design as the solution to many problems. This paper explores the relationship between organization structure (design), functioning of organizations, and effectiveness. A study of 320 companies showed that the structural variable, decentralization, marginally affected the way in which organizations function. Functional variables had a minor impact on profitability. No direct relationship between structure and effectiveness was found. When functioning is conceptualized as a mediating factor no direct causality between structure and effectiveness is implied, but a relationship between structure, function and effectiveness. To improve effectiveness, reorganizing is probably not the first option to consider.

  • Big Data in spare parts supply chains: The potential of using product-in-use data in aftermarket demand planning
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. - 0960-0035. ; 48:5, s. 524-544
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to explore and propose how product-in-use data can be used in, and improve the performance of, the demand planning process for automotive aftermarket services. A literature review and a single-case study investigate the underlying reasons for the demand for spare parts by conducting in-depth interviews, observing actual demand-generating activities, and studying the demand planning process. This study identifies the relevant product-in-use data and divides them into five main categories. We have analysed how product-in-use data is best utilised, in planning spare parts with different attributes, e.g. different life-cycle phases and demand frequencies. Furthermore, we identify eight potentially relevant areas of application of product-in-use data in the demand planning process, and elaborate on their performance effects. This study details the understanding of what impact context has on the potential performance effects of using product-in-use data in aftermarket demand planning. Propositions generate several strands for future research. This study shows the potential impact of using product-in-use data, using eight different types of interventions for spare parts, in the aftermarket demand planning. The literature focuses on single applications of product-in-use data, but would benefit from considering the context of application. This study presents interventions and explores how these enable improved demand planning by analysing usage and effects.

  • Sales and operations execution: An explorative study on potential effects
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Nofoma conference 2020.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Sales and operations planning have a long history in practice and has been researched extensively. It has been proposed that this tactical concept needs to be aligned with a more operational, short-term concept, hence the purpose of this paper is to investigate how sales and operations execution (S&OE) can enhance the performance of a supply chain by analyzing contingency factors regarding design and use. Methodology A multiple-case study approach investigates the potential outcome of implementing a S&OE process in various contexts. Empirical data from several firms in various industries are analyzed according to common and unique factors affecting the potential result. Findings his study identifies critical design for an S&OE process to have a positive outcome in different contexts. Furthermore, relevant data is identified, as well as actors essential for successful usage. Finally, we present, by using knowledge management theory, the importance of integrating S&OE in the planning hierarchy and how the S&OE practice leads to results. Research implications This study details the understanding of how sales and operations execution affects the supply chain performance, given different contextual aspects. Practical implications This study shows the potential impact of implementing S&OE for different types of businesses, as well as giving guiding principles for its design. Original/value S&OE as a concept is today merely described as white papers and consultancy reports. To our best knowledge, this is the first academic study that explores the sales and execution phenomenon in a real-world context.

  • Nordic research in logistics and supply chain management: an empirical analysis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. - : Emerald. - 0960-0035. ; 38:6, s. 452-474
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this data-based analysis is to report and reflect on the characteristics ofthe academic discipline concerned with logistics and supply chain management (SCM) as it isconducted in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). The paperfurther seeks to explain variations in the research field in terms of the demographics, research domainsand methodologies, and publication patterns of the study’s respondents.Design/methodology/approach – An e-mail questionnaire survey was distributed to 353researchers based in the Nordic countries. With 144 answers returned, the response rate was 41 per cent.Findings – The study did not provide a clear picture of a distinct Nordic research paradigm applyingto the study of logistics and SCM. The analysis shows as characteristic of research issues pursued byNordic researchers the focus on supply chains and networks and the use of dyads, chains or networksof organizations as levels of analysis. The use of case study methodology and a highly diversifiedpublication pattern were likewise evident. Most researchers were found to rely heavily on externalresearch funding. Significant differences were also identified for research conducted by researchersholding PhD degrees as compared to research by respondents with lower degrees, for researchersaffiliated with institutions based in the technical sciences in comparison to those in the social sciences, and for institutions according to their varying degrees of experience with research in the field andexternal funding.Research limitations/implications – The research reported here may help individual researchersraise their consciousness about their own research.Originality/value – This is the first empirical study to analyze research paradigms within logisticsand SCM in the Nordic countries. It identifies a number of significant differences in regard to researchpatterns among various categories of researchers and institutions.
