  • Computer support for systematic design applied in a cross-functional commercial concept development project
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of TMCE2002, Wuhan, China.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, an empirical study aiming at exploring the practical applicability of a computer support for systematic design methodology is presented. During a six-month project a cross-functional product development team in the automotive industry was studied using an action-based research approach. The team applied a systematic design methodology and used a computer tool that provides support for systematic design. In this paper we set out our conclusions on the effects of the methodology and tool with regards to creativity, quality, time consumption, and the work process of the team. In addition, suggestions for future development of systematic design tools are listed. Finally, recommendations for the application of systematic design in industry are given.

  • Exploring Requirements Management in the Automotive Industry
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: 14th International Conference on Engineering Design Research for Practice - innovative products, processes and organisations.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an empirical study carried out in the automotive industry, with the aim to bring forward new experiences and knowledge on management of requirements in practice. Adopting a qualitative systems approach, and using multiple information sources, the requirements management process during the development of a passenger car cockpit has been mapped out. The logical reconstruction of the requirements management process is complemented with descriptions of associated phenomena, such as important events and attitudes. Findings are presented, analysed and discussed considering also factors underlying observed phenomena.

  • Requirements management in practice: findings from an empirical study in the automotive industry
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Research in Engineering Design. ; 17:3, s. 113-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an empirical study carried out in the automotive industry, with the aim to bring forward new experiences and knowledge on management of requirements in practice. Adopting a qualitative systems approach, and using multiple information sources, the requirements management process during the development of a passenger car cockpit has been mapped out. More specifically, the intention has been to identify and describe progress, changes, deviations, and compromises regarding the requirements and their fulfilment linked to the different phases of the product development. The logical reconstruction of the requirements management process is complemented with broad descriptions of associated phenomena, such as important events, organisational structures, competences, and attitudes. Findings are presented, analysed and discussed considering also factors underlying observed phenomena. Accompanying the empirical findings, the paper concludes with recommendations for constructive and efficient requirements management in practice.

  • Product Model for Requirements and Design Concept Management: Representing Design Alternatives and Rationale
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: 3th Annual International Symposium INCOSE 2003.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Throughout the development of complex products, thousands of requirements are established, communicated, followed up, and verified. In addition, even more design solutions, at various levels of abstractions, are created, refined, evaluated, industrialised and verified during this period. Although design tools support the documentation and administration of the output of these activities, i.e. requirements and solutions, they lack the functionality to support the iterative gestation of requirements and design solutions as they are created. This paper illustrates how a product model, focusing on requirements and design concept management, can address these issues by incorporating design rationale, i.e. the reasoning and the justification underlying requirements and solutions considered, with the aim to close the gap between product models and design rationale models. The product model has been implemented in a commercial PDM software and its use is illustrated with the information from the design of a passenger car cockpit.

  • Outcomes-focused evaluation of engineering programs - Inhibitor or stimulant for improvement?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 9th International CDIO Conference, Cambridge, USA.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, a new model for quality evaluation of higher education is being introduced. It is internationally unique. A very strong emphasis on assessing the quality of an entire education through its outcomes, defined by samples of final degree reports, is perhaps the most original feature of the model. This is claimed to enable a direct assessment of quality rather than the indirect assessment used in conventional models. The model has, however, been intensively debated during its development and first years of use. The aims of this paper are first to evaluate in what ways and to what extent the Swedish national model for evaluation of higher education contributes to the quality improvement of the evaluated programs, and second to describe and evaluate an approach for organizing the project to prepare the evaluation documentation for a large-scale education evaluation. The paper concludes that on an overall and averaged level, the project participants estimated that the model will contribute to positive effects. Specific areas are identified including ethics and focus of final degree reports. However, there is a strong variance in the data: There is a substantial fraction of participants who have not identified any improvements or weak spots, and who do not think that the evaluation preparation will positively affect education quality development. Chalmers University of Technology chose to approach the evaluation with a centrally managed project. The setup gave possibilities for rationalization through common training, supporting materials, a common document database and for information sharing across departmental boundaries. Nevertheless, the project was very time-consuming with an average of 540 hours spent for each program/degree.

  • Datasets in design research: needs and challenges and the role of AI and GPT in filling the gaps
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Design Society. - 2732-527X. ; 4, s. 1919-1928
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the recognized importance of datasets in data-driven design approaches, their extensive study remains limited. We review the current landscape of design datasets and highlight the ongoing need for larger and more comprehensive datasets. Three categories of challenges in dataset development are identified. Analyses show critical dataset gaps in design process where future studies can be directed. Synthetic and end-to-end datasets are suggested as two less explored avenues. The recent application of Generative Pretrained Transformers (GPT) shows their potential in addressing these needs.

  • Design Analytics is the Answer, But What Questions Would Product Developers Like to Have Answered?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Conference on Engineering Design, ICED. - 2220-4334 .- 2220-4342. ; 7:DS87-7, s. 71-80
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a growing need for data expertise and data analysis. Companies are looking more towards analytics for improvement opportunities within the business and products. Data collection is growing at a fast pace and we need capabilities to be able to analyze it. The data volume that companies are sitting on makes this task even more important. The paper presents interviews performed with product developers who have worked on a large complex system development project. The findings explain questions and needs developers are facing and what answers they are looking for with data mining. By Identifying beneficial and meaningful outputs from data mining and data analytics, developers can be supported in making better decisions for a new designs/re-designs and ultimately make a superior robust product. The paper further accounts for 20 heterogeneous purposefully sample interviews, ranging in project roles from product development to manufacturing and testing.
