  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The progress of modernization is accompanied by an emphasis on urban mobility and economic growth together with increasing environmental awareness. This article aims at analysing the transformation of transport systems (car-road system and public transport) together with related urban changes and their societal effects in three very different cities: Santiago, Tehran and Copenhagen. In these cities vehicle ownership is increasing and motorized mobility is further facilitated. Mass motorization is an essential part of modernization. However, its impact on societal development is an area of research that has received little attention. Moreover, mass motorization is handled in different ways in different socio-political settings. In Tehran the emphasis is on technological upgrading and enlargement. In Santiago, an important re-regulation and modernisation of the systems is taking place. In Copenhagen all kinds of improvements are made partly inspired by the Agenda 21. Furthermore, as this article points out, the local political order and chosen strategies to handle motorization problems are diverse. My analysis emphasizes mass motorization, political interventions, civil society, urban governance, sustainable development and the management of urban mobility. I conclude that political strength at the city level seems to be weaker than what is observed at the national level.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article paper explores the state-market relation and the politics of personal urban mobility. The way of handling and regulating issues of urban transport is related to the prevailing model of economic growth. The sector of transport is intertwined with development of trade and industry and to facilitate a modern urban lifestyle and economic growth. At the same time, decades ago centrally planned economies like China did not invest much in urban public transport but this is now changing. On the other hand Cardenas provided the Mexicans with low fares already in the 1930’s because it was seen to deliver modernization and growth. Today’s commercial liberalization has a bearing on urban mobility as shown in the case of Singapore. This state is a global city that has become a role model through focusing on economic development, security and stressing a careful planning of systems of transport in order to remove constraints to continued economic development and environmental disasters. The lessons learned in other ‘successful cities’ such as Curitiba, is that its development was not based on public deliberation. Civil society was marginalized in the making of success cities. A number of cities such as Santiago, Brasília, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore exemplify this top-down view on economic and city development. UN organizations like ESCAP and ECLAC have jointly taken initiative for regional infrastructure development.
