- Technical debt refers to various weaknesses in the design or implementation of a system resulting from trade-offs during software development usually for a quick release. Accumulating such debt over time without reducing it can seriously hamper the reusability and maintainability of the software. The aim of this study is to understand the state of the technical debt in the development of self-driving miniature cars so that proper actions can be planned to reduce the debt to have more reusable and maintainable software. A case study on a selected feature from two self-driving miniature car development projects is performed to assess the technical debt. Additionally, an interview study is conducted involving the developers to relate the findings of the case study with the possible root causes. The result of the study indicates that "the lack of knowledge" is not the primary reason for the accumulation of technical debt from the selected code smells. The root causes are rather in factors like time pressure followed by issues related to software/hardware integration and incomplete refactoring as well as reuse of legacy, third party, or open source code.

- Unequivocally understandable requirements are vital for software design process. However, in practice it is hard to achieve the desired level of understandability, because in large software products a substantial amount of requirements tend to have ambiguous or complex descriptions. Over time such requirements decelerate the development speed and increase the risk of late design modifications, therefore finding and improving them is an urgent task for software designers. Manual reviewing is one way of addressing the problem, but it is effort-intensive and critically slow for large products. Another way is using measurement, in which case one needs to design effective measures. In recent years there have been great endeavors in creating and validating measures for requirements understandability: most of the measures focused on ambiguous patterns. While ambiguity is one property that has major effect on understandability, there is also another important property, complexity, which also has major effect on understandability, but is relatively less investigated. In this paper we define a complexity measure for textual requirements through an action research project in a large software development organization. We also present its evaluation results in three large companies. The evaluation shows that there is a significant correlation between the measurement values and the manual assessment values of practitioners. We recommend this measure to be used with earlier created ambiguity measures as means for automated identification of complex specifications.

- The complexity management of software code has become one of the major problems in software development industry. With growing complexity the maintenance effort of code increases. Moreover, various aspects of complexity create difficulties for complexity assessment. The objective of this paper is to investigate the relationships of various aspects of code complexity and propose a method for identifying the most complex functions. We have conducted an action research project in two software development companies and complemented it with a study of three open source products. Four complexity metrics are measured, and their nature and mutual influence are investigated. The results and possible explanations are discussed with software engineers in industry. The results show that there are two distinguishable aspects of complexity of source code functions: Internal and outbound complexities. Those have an inverse relationship. Moreover, the product of them does not seem to be greater than a certain limit, regardless of software size. We present a method that permits identification of most complex functions considering the two aspects of complexities. The evaluation shows that the use of the method is effective in industry: It enables identification of 0.5% most complex functions out of thousands of functions for reengineering.

- Virtual rehabilitation has emerged as a promising tool over the last decade. However the field is diverse and there is no unified understanding of the concept and in which situations it should be used. The most common usage context is a rehabilitation clinic but there is an urge to offer motivating virtual rehabilitation to be used in the homes of patients. The main drive for using such systems is to enhance motivation by introducing an interesting challenge and an element of fun. This paper describes and evaluates the feasibility of Elinor, a gamebased system for stroke rehabilitation in the home.The Elinor prototype has been positively evaluated with respect to its usability, user acceptance and motivational factors. This paper reports on the initial findings concerning the rehabilitation effect of Elinor. No persons suffered any serious adverse effects from training. We had positive results with respect to the assessment of motor and process skills (AMPS). Even though these improvements were not significant they are still positive enough to motivate future work. The self-reported improvements in the motor activity logs (MAL) also motivate future work.

- The private sector as well as the public sector seeks qualified personnel who are motivated to work in the areas of administration and management. For example, students who have been educated as controllers, purchasing agents and managers are much sought after. Thus, public and private sector organizations are interested in connecting to students who want to study business administration, management and public administration. One goal of such organizations is to encourage students to study particular business areas, especially financial and administrative areas. In this paper, we discuss the possibilities for bridging the gap between education’s theoretical knowledge and management’s practical knowing. As the locus for this discussion, we use the field visit in which students meet with managers at work and acquire images of work. Our empirical data were obtained from field visits that students from two Swedish university programs took. We present this data as two case studies. As part of the experience, the students’ classroom lecturer and several representatives from the visited organizations made presentations to the students. The students in the first case made a series of field visits to retail stores. The students in the second case visited the accounting department at local government offices. We found that students generally enjoy seeing and discussing actual work sites away from the university. They are interested in learning about organizations where they might work after graduation. The visited organizations also find these field visits of value. These visits, through the translation process of the student-manager interaction, attempt to bridge theory and practice. One consequence of such visits, not examined closely in the literature, is that this interaction significantly influences the students’ images of work. Students become familiar with image-creating words such as enthusiasm, personnel issues, responsibility and an opportunity to influence.

- Sjukvårdspersonalen har ett stort inflytande på sitt arbete. I en tid när NPM fått en stark inverkan på offentliga organisationer förskjuts det som tidigare varit den offentliga sektorns kännetecken som: demokrati, öppenhet, yttrandefrihet, samverkan, helhetssyn och rättssäkerhet, till mer ekonomistiska och managementlika sådana, som produktivitet, kostnadseffektivitet, kundorientering, resultatkrav och avtal. Syftet i denna artikel är att kritiskt diskutera tillsättningen av medicinare på traditionella manage-menttjänster i hälso- och sjukvården och vad det kan medföra. Dessa tillsättningar motiveras vanligen av förbättrad effektivitet, men också av kvalitet och säkerhet för verksamheten. Skälen är svåra att argumentera emot, och därför har de fått stark genomslagskraft. Vi vill just peka på riskerna, som ofta negligeras och förespråkarna har en slagkraftig retorik. Positiva effekter saknas inte men de måste vägas mot de negativa effekterna. Metoden är intervjuer med 15 sjuksköterskor och läkare som har chefsuppdrag. Därtill har vi 5 fokusgrupper som består av verksamhetsansvariga sjuksköterskor och läkare under managementutbildning. Resultaten visar på att det främst är fyra risker förknippat med tillsättning av medicinare på tradit-ionella managementtjänster: läkarens professionella kompetens minskar, förtroendet för läkaren som medicinsk kunnig minskar, liksom för organisationen och vården i stort. Därtill trängs viktiga värden inom servicedomänen undan till förmån för administrativa värden.

- Meta-modeling has been a topic of interest in the modeling community for many years, yielding substantial number of papers describing its theoretical concepts. Many of them are aiming to solve the problem of traditional UML based domain-specific meta-modeling related to its non-compliance to the strict meta-modeling principle, such as the deep meta-modeling approach. In this paper, we show the practical use of meta-models in the automotive development process based on AUTOSAR and visualize places in the AUTOSAR metamodel which are broken according to the strict meta-modeling principle. We then explain how the AUTOSAR meta-modeling environment can be re-worked in order to comply to this principle by applying three individual approaches, each one combined with the concept of Orthogonal Classification Architecture: UML extension, prototypical pattern and deep instantiation. Finally we discuss the applicability of these approaches in practice and contrast the identified issues with the actual problems faced by the automotive meta-modeling practitioners.
