  • Smooth lattices over quadratic integers
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Mathematische Zeitschrift. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-1823 .- 0025-5874. ; 258:1, s. 161-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We construct lattices with quadratic structure over the integers in quadratic number fields having the property that the rank of the quadratic structure is constant and equal to the rank of the lattice in all reductions modulo maximal ideals. We characterize the case in which such lattices are free. The construction gives a representative of the genus of such lattices as an orthogonal sum of "standard" pieces of ranks 1-4 and covers the case of the discriminant of the real quadratic number field congruent to 1 modulo 8 for which a general construction was not known. © 2007 Springer-Verlag.

  • Towards Celiac-safe foods: Decreasing the affinity of transglutaminase 2 for gliadin by addition of ascorbyl palmitate and ZnCl2 as detoxifiers
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322 .- 2045-2322. ; 7:77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Initiation of celiac disease is triggered in the gastrointestinal tract by transglutaminase 2 (TG2) assisted deamidation of gluten peptides. Deamidation is a side-reaction to transamidation and occurs if primary amines are absent. In contrast to deamidation, transamidation does not trigger an immune response. The aim of the study was to identify a suitable food additive that interacts with TG2 binding motives in gluten-derived peptides to prevent deamidation/transamidation. Homology modelling of alpha 2-gliadin and computational screening of compounds for their binding affinity to a common TG2 binding motive (P) QLP were done by using computational approaches followed by experimental testing of TG2 activity. A database containing 1174 potential food grade ligands was screened against the model of alpha 2-gliadin (27 out of 33 aa). Out of the five best ligands, ascorbyl palmitate, was observed to decrease TG2 transamidation of gliadin by 82% +/- 2%. To completely silence the transamidation, we added zinc chloride (ZnCl2), and thereby reached a 99% +/- 1% inhibition of TG2 activity. In addition, we conducted a pilot experiment in which ascorbyl palmitate was observed to decrease TG2 deamidation of gliadin completely. We propose ascorbyl palmitate in combination with ZnCl2 with the future perspective to become an additive in celiac-safe foods.

  • Intravital fluorescent microscopic evaluation of bacterial cellulose as scaffold for vascular grafts.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of biomedical materials research. Part A. - : Wiley. - 1552-4965 .- 1549-3296. ; 93:1, s. 140-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although commonly used synthetic vascular grafts perform satisfactorily in large caliber blood vessels, they are prone to thrombosis in small diameter vessels. Therefore, small vessels might benefit from tissue engineered vascular grafts. This study evaluated bacterial cellulose (BC) as a potential biomaterial for biosynthetic blood vessels. We implanted the dorsal skinfold chambers in three groups of Syrian golden hamsters with BC (experimental group), polyglycolic acid, or expanded polytetrafluorethylene (control groups). Following implantation, we used intravital fluorescence microscopy, histology, and immunohistochemistry to analyze the biocompatibility, neovascularization, and incorporation of each material over a time period of 2 weeks. Biocompatibility was good in all groups, as indicated by the absence of leukocyte activation upon implantation. All groups displayed angiogenic response in the host tissue, but that response was highest in the polyglycolic acid group. Histology revealed vascularized granulation tissue surrounding all three biomaterials, with many proliferating cells and a lack of apoptotic cell death 2 weeks after implantation. In conclusion, BC offers good biocompatibility and material incorporation compared with commonly used materials in vascular surgery. Thus, BC represents a promising new biomaterial for tissue engineering of vascular grafts.

  • Self-gravitating stationary spherically symmetric systems in relativistic galactic dynamics
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society. - 0305-0041 .- 1469-8064. ; 143, s. 731-752
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study equilibrium states in relativistic galactic dynamics which are described by stationary solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system for collisionless matter. We recast the equations into a regular three-dimensional system of autonomous first order ordinary differential equations on a bounded state space. Based on a dynamical systems analysis we derive new theorems that guarantee that the steady state solutions have finite radii and masses.

  • Hydrogen-Induced Reconstruction of Cu(100): Two-Dimensional and One-Dimensional Structures of Surface Hydride
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - Washington : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 118:29, s. 15773-15778
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adsorption of atomic hydrogen has a remarkable influence on the structure and morphology of the Cu(I00) surface. We have examined two specific situations; the well-known reconstructed p(2 x 2)-H surface and a one-dimensional (6 X 1)-H surface resembling the stripe reconstruction observed in an electrochemical environment. High resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy and density functional calculations show that the H atoms occupy only surface sites and that H bonding in induced 3-fold Cu surface hollow sites is a structural key element. The calculations support a transient scenario in which H absorption in subsurface sites is a critical intermediate step in the reconstruction of the Cu surface. We find clear evidence in terms of characteristic properties, like the H-Cu bond lengths and the dipole excited vibrational mode spectra, that these structures consist of two-dimensional and one-dimensional structures of surface hydride.

  • Monitoring the osmotic response of single yeast cells through force measurement in the environmental scanning electron microscope
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Measurement science and technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-0233 .- 1361-6501. ; 25:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a measurement system that combines an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) and an atomic force microscope (AFM). This combination enables studies of static and dynamic mechanical properties of hydrated specimens, such as individual living cells. The integrated AFM sensor provides direct and continuous force measurement based on piezoresistive force transduction, allowing the recording of events in the millisecond range. The in situ ESEM-AFM setup was used to study Pichia pastoris wild-type yeast cells. For the first time, a quantified measure of the osmotic response of an individual yeast cell inside an ESEM is presented. With this technique, cell size changes due to humidity variations can be monitored with nanometre accuracy. In addition, mechanical properties were extracted from load-displacement curves. A Young's modulus of 13-15 MPa was obtained for the P. pastoris yeast cells. The developed method is highly interesting as a complementary tool for the screening of drugs directed towards cellular water transport activity and provides new possibilities of studying mechanosensitive regulation of aquaporins.

  • The Impact of Repeated Assessments by Patients and Professionals: A 4-Year Follow-Up of a Population With Schizophrenia
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. - : SAGE Publications. - 1078-3903 .- 1532-5725. ; 25:3, s. 189-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The needs of people with schizophrenia are great, and having extensive knowledge of this patient group is crucial for providing the right support. The aim of this study was to investigate, over 4 years, the importance of repeated assessments by patients with schizophrenia and by professionals. Data were collected from evidence-based assessment scales, interviews, and visual self-assessment scales. The data processing used descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analyses. The results showed that the relationships between several of the patients’ self-rating assessments were stronger at the 4-year follow-up than at baseline. In parallel, the concordance rate between patient assessments and case manager assessments increased. The conclusions drawn are that through repeated assessments the patients’ ability to assess their own situation improved over time and that case managers became better at understanding their patients’ situation. This, in turn, provides a safer basis for assessments and further treatment interventions, which may lead to more patients achieving remission, which can lead to less risk for hospitalization and too early death.

  • A systematic mapping study of source code representation for deep learning in software engineering
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Iet Software. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). - 1751-8806 .- 1751-8814. ; 16:4, s. 351-385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The usage of deep learning (DL) approaches for software engineering has attracted much attention, particularly in source code modelling and analysis. However, in order to use DL, source code needs to be formatted to fit the expected input form of DL models. This problem is known as source code representation. Source code can be represented via different approaches, most importantly, the tree-based, token-based, and graph-based approaches. We use a systematic mapping study to investigate i detail the representation approaches adopted in 103 studies that use DL in the context of software engineering. Thus, studies are collected from 2014 to 2021 from 14 different journals and 27 conferences. We show that each way of representing source code can provide a different, yet orthogonal view of the same source code. Thus, different software engineering tasks might require different (combinations of) code representation approaches, depending on the nature and complexity of the task. Particularly, we show that it is crucial to define whether the DL approach requires lexical, syntactical, or semantic code information. Our analysis shows that a wide range of different representations and combinations of representations (hybrid representations) are used to solve a wide range of common software engineering problems. However, we also observe that current research does not generally attempt to transfer existing representations or models to other studies even though there are other contexts in which these representations and models may also be useful. We believe that there is potential for more reuse and the application of transfer learning when applying DL to software engineering tasks.
