  • Health and development: HIV/AIDS and the double appropriation of human security discourse by practitioners of female circumcision and development NGOs in Cameroon
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Human Security 3 (1), 45. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate ethnographically that within the new institutional context of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, development NGOs intervening in the fight against female circumcision by using the language of human security have instead produced a backlash marked by resistance and contestation. I argue that the issue of health security underpins the agenda of both the state and transnational stakeholders who use the 'modernist' language of security to reinforce their collective positions towards practitioners of ritual female circumcision. The advent of the HIV/AIDS pandemic reinvigorated debates about human security which contributed to the framing of practices such as ritual bodily 'mutilation' in a human security context. The health security ('harmful health effect') paradigm that dominates anti-mutilation advocacy is a double-edged sword. While this framework reduces the complexity of ritual mutilation to health alone, some segments of circumcising communities among the Ejaghams of southwest Cameroon frame the issue of female circumcision in terms of 'social security'. This exemplifies competing health and security views, 'local' and 'scientific' knowledge systems. Within the new medical and institutional context and the dynamics of the AIDS pandemic, a double appropriation of the concept of 'security' is evident by some segments of the Ejagham community, by the state, and by anti-mutilation advocates. This has limited the success of the anti-mutilation campaigns, especially as these 'risk' and 'health security' concepts do not always reflect the people's lived experiences, partly because of the activists' 'failure' to domesticate these concepts.

  • Multiple identities: gender, power and the production of anthropological knowledge
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Anthropology Matters Journal 2009, Vol 11 (1).
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses my “outsider within” status in terms of gender, age, nationality, race and perceived positionality and alliance with the “Whiteman” (by virtue of my western educational status) during my fieldwork. My research centered on the contentious debate over female circumcision in Southwest Cameroon. It examines the gulf between perceived antifemale circumcision activism and the quest for anthropological knowledge through ethnography. My multiple identities expose illuminating insights about the larger global context of power in which the ritual procedure is intertwined and how they may be shaping the practices on the ground, as well as on the political complexity of both theoretical and applied research

  • Defining lifestyle
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Environmental Sciences. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1744-4225 .- 1569-3430. ; 4:2, s. 63-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of lifestyle is commonly used as something that needs to be changed if we want to achieve a sustainable development. But what does the concept of lifestyle mean? How is it defined? Educators and politicians, among others, need a definition to use the concept and understand how it is related to sustainable development. This paper suggests a plural definition based on a level analysis. There are four levels, from individual to global, on which lifestyle can be understood. There is also an alternative definition on the individual level from a cognitive science perspective. We need to understand the concept of lifestyle at these levels to analyse the relationship to sustainable development problems. Perhaps we should not look at lifestyle as a problem per se, but at the problems used to elaborate a lifestyle.

  • Learning about environmental issues with the aid of cognitive artefacts
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: SSKKII Publications. - 1653-8420.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • When looking at the issue of learning about environmental problems many difficulties stem from their inherent abstractness which causes difficulties because humans have a problem understanding information that is not directly perceivable. We primarily create our lives on perceivable information and by imitating other people. This paper will examine the limitations of the human mind and it will discuss environmental problems that we can't grasp, but on the other hand it will discuss our cognitive capacities and the kind of tools we can use, and how these might be handled by educators. The tools discussed are: models and miniatures, metaphors and analogies, tracking, key questions, and (participatory) stories. The cognitive science approach is just one way of looking at the issue but it can be useful when dealing with educational challenges.

  • Identifying deliberation in social movement assemblies: challenges of comparative participant observation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Public Deliberation. - 1937-2841. ; 4:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contemporary social movements can serve as a critical case for the empirical study of deliberation. In countless face-to-face meetings activists often discuss long hours before a decision is reached. In this context, we try to analyse the conditions under which deliberation is successfully employed as a method of discursive conflict resolution. As we develop participant observation in a comparative approach we encounter three methodological challenges which this paper addresses. First, we look at some characteristics of the global justice movements, briefly addressing the different settings in which controversial discussions occur. Second, we give a rationale for applying a semi-standardised multi-level participant observation in order to allow the collection of comparable data by various researchers in several countries. Focusing on participant observation on the level of controversial discussions we thirdly conceptualise competitiveness, power, and asymmetry as three theoretical dimensions to identify eight different practices of discourse, one of them being deliberation. We are currently implementing this model for regular observations of group meetings on a local, national and European level. First results should be available in the near future.

  • Viagra Selfhood: Pharmaceutical Advertising and the Visual Formation of Swedish Masculinity
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Health Care Analysis. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1065-3058 .- 1573-3394. ; 17:2, s. 144-159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using material from the Pfizer sponsored website providing health information on erectile dysfunction to potential Swedish Viagra customers (www.potenslinjen.se), this article explores the public image of masculinity in relation to sexual health and the cultural techniques for creating pharmaceutical appeal. We zoom in on the targeted ideal users of Viagra, and the nationalized, racialized and sexualized identities they are assigned. As part of Pfizer’s marketing strategy of adjustments to fit the local consumer base, the ways in which Viagra is promoted for the Swedish setting is telling of what concepts of masculinity are so stable and unassailable that they can withstand the association with a drug that is, in essence, an acknowledgement of ‘failed’ masculinity and ‘dysfunctional’ sexuality. With comparative national examples, this study presents a take on the ‘glocalized’ cultural imaginary of Viagra, and the masculine subject positions it engenders.

  • Diffusion of Internet for Mobile Devices in Sweden
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nordic and Baltic Journal of Information and Communications Technologies (nb!ict). - 1902-097X. ; 2:1, s. 39-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Diffusion of mobile internet is presently taking place and the mobile phone is being transformed from a predominantly communication device into a multimedia device that can be used for mobile internet. This paper outlines empirical arguments why usage is a more preferable measure than ownership of devices. Diffusion of mobile internet in Sweden between 2006 and 2007 is analysed and the characteristics of the early-adopters are identified. Furthermore, the paper provides explanations for the rate of diffusion via an analysis of attitudes towards different attributes of mobile internet services.
