  • Choreographing Histories: Critical Perspectives on Dance Histories in Nordic Dance Practices and Scholarship
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Dance. - 1891-6708. ; 14:1, s. 31-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This text is based on a roundtable organised by the five authors at the 2022 NOFOD conference in Copenhagen. As scholars and practitioners invested in the research and teaching of dance history both inside and outside academia, we wanted to address the pressing issue of how ‘history’ is defined and positioned within Nordic dance scholarship and practices today. Dance, as we think of it and practise it in our everyday lives, is far more diverse than the so-called ‘contemporary dance’ that the white authors listed as scholars and practitioners in the conference call indicate. For this roundtable, we wanted to show that dance theory and practice-led work in dance go far beyond the Eurocentric idea of contemporary dance present in the conference call, and to advocate for a more inclusive understanding of the practices of making or researching dance in the future

  • Activating dance records: Conceptualizing research into the Swedish, Nordic and global archives pertaining to the Russian dancer Anna Robenne
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nordic Theatre Studies. - : Det Kgl. Bibliotek/Royal Danish Library. - 2002-3898 .- 0904-6380. ; 29:1, s. 117-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the following research question: In what ways can activa-tions of dance records (archived materials and other recordings of activities) be conceptualized to contribute to the making of a critically productive dance history in the digital age? Drawing on an extensive study of the Russian dancer Anna Robenne, the article focuses on the archival explorations (or road trip) as such, and in particular the multifaceted ways in which the records themselves can be active agents in processes of memory making and history production. Adopting recent theoretical developments concerning the concept of plurali-zation in archival studies, the exploration discards the conventional and rather static understanding of records as neutral containers of facts to emphasize instead an inclusive and infinitely evolving process. Working within an interdis-ciplinary archive-oriented realm, the author reflexively makes use of practices and methods belonging to both art history and classical and contemporary dance tradition. The article first maps recent pluralizing approaches within archival studies including re-theorizations of the key concepts records, pro-venance, value and representation. It then conceptualizes archival activation through examples from the archival road trip. The article concludes by offering the reader clear arguments for archival pluralization in the form of intimate, invasive, and imaginary activation, and demonstrates the importance and rele-vance of closely, critically and imaginatively engaging with records. The article highlights the role the archive can play in breaking down cultural barriers and re-evaluating notions of dance historiography, heritage and cultural identity.

  • Affect and Digital Caregiving: Challenging the Performing Arts Canon with a ‘Dig Where You Stand’ Database
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Archives and Records: special issue confronting the canon. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2325-7962 .- 2325-7989. ; 43:2, s. 128-142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article addresses the affective dimensions of caregiving in relation to materials outside the canon, influenced by Caswell and Cifor’s notion of radical empathy. The article employs the author’s positionality and lived experience, using specific examples to illustrate ‘zones of friction’ where the dominant discourse and its processes of canon formation show themselves, and how radical empathy can expose and destabilize the performing arts canon. The author begins to use these examples, and the feelings they evoke, as a waymarking tool for the application of methodologies such as ‘dig where you stand.’ This data collection methodology, by recording a wider and more inclusive range of participants as of equal value to performing arts work (in this case), brings Caswell and Cifor’s ‘caregiving’ to more stakeholders. The notion of ‘transforming affect into substantial data’ exemplifies the article’s engagement with the canon to articulate the potential for transformation.
