  • A new look at the theory of social value orientations: Do prosocials maximize joint outcome or equal outcomes?
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at The 10th conference of the international society for justice research (ISJR), Regina, Canada.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Existing theories of social value orientations posit that prosocials maximize joint outcomes whereas proselfs maximize outcomes to themselves. Three studies were conducted to test the alternative hypothesis that prosocials prefer equal outcomes to maximizing joint outcome. In accordance with the hypothesis, Study 1 showed that prosocials preferred equal outcomes to maximize the joint outcome. Study 2 confirmed and extended these results by demonstrating that prosocials preferred equal outcomes to larger joint outcomes that were unequally distributed but provided both with larger outcomes. Study 3 demonstrated that in a modified prisoners dilemma game, a preference for equal outcomes to a larger joint outcome resulted in that prosocials cooperated when they believed or knew that the other cooperated, and defected when they believed or knew that the other defected

  • A cross-country study of fairness and infringement on freedom as determinants of car owners´ acceptance of road pricing.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transportation. ; 31:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Jakobsson et al. (2000) found that in Sweden public acceptance of road pricing decreases if it is perceived to be unfair and to infringe on freedom. The present study reports a survey investigating whether the same effects are found in the Asian countries of Japan and Taiwan. The results indicate that fairness plays the same role. However, infringement of freedom may be more important in Japan than in Sweden or Taiwan. Income had a direct effect on acceptance in Taiwan but not in Japan or Sweden.

  • Temporary structural change as a strategy to break car-use habit
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Paper presented in L. Steg & B. Gatersleben (Conveners), Travel psychology. Symposium conducted at the 3rd international conference on traffic & transport psychology, University of Nottingham, UK..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The results from three studies demonstrate that a temporary structural change breaks car-use habits and promotes public transport use. Studies 1 and 3 indicated that the temporary structural change induced a temporary behavioural change from car use to public transport use. As Studies 1 and 2 showed, the temporary behavioural change broke car-use habits. In addition, as found in Study 3, the temporary behavioural change corrected habitual drivers negative beliefs about the service level of public transport. The results of Study 2 showed that a temporary behavioural change had a positive effect on attitudes toward public transport. This attitude modification was perhaps caused by corrections of negative beliefs about public transport

  • Influences of currency on price evaluations.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Poster presented at the 28th international congress of psychology, Beijing, China.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Research has documented an influence of the nominal representation of prices that are evaluated as more expensive in a large-unit currency than in a small-unit currency. These results may however be reversed when prices are compared to income since the difference between price and income will appear smaller in the large-unit currency than in the small-unit currency. To test this hypothesis two groups of undergraduates were informed of their income, then requested to evaluate prices of different consumer products. Both prices and income were expressed in either a small-unit currency or a large-unit currency. Results supported the hypothesis

  • The role of spatial cognition in transport
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: In D. Hensher, K. J. Button, K. E. Haynes, & P. R. Stopher (Eds.), Handbook of transport geography and spatial systems (pp. 501-512). Amsterdam: Pergamon/Elsevier. - 0080441084 ; , s. 501-512
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The focus of this chapter is an examination of the relationship between cognitive maps and travel behavior in urban environments. We do this examination incrementally, beginning with clarifications of terms relating to cognitive maps, cognitive mapping and wayfinding. We then emphasize transportation-related issues such as cognizing of transportation networks, path selection, wayfinding and navigation. We further examine problems of selecting paths to destinations by using existing transport networks. We also introduce concerns relating to the role of trip purpose in path selection and discuss how different purposes spawn different path or route selection strategies. In a final section we briefly examine the interaction between cognitive maps, cognitive mapping, and current practice of travel choice modeling

  • Asymmetrical access to information in social dilemmas with resource uncertainty
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Contemporary psychological research on social dilemmas / R. Suleiman, D. V. Budescu, I. Fischer & D. M. Messick. - Cambridge : Cambridge University Press.. ; , s. 361-375
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Resource uncertainty or incomplete knowledge about the size of a resource has been found to reduce cooperation in social dilemmas. After a brief review of this research the chapter focuses on how the negative effects of resource uncertainty can be eliminated or reduced. In analyzing the importance of information conveyed by others, emphasis is placed on situations where not all actors have access to the same information regarding resource size (i.e., asymmetric information). Several new experiments conducted by the authors are reported. Real-life examples where asymmetric information plays a crucial role are also analyzed.

  • Car user responses to travel demand management measures: Goal setting and choice of adaptation alternatives
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research D. ; :9, s. 263-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Travel demand management measures can be used to encourage car users to set car-use reduction goals when experiencing impairments in travel options. In forming plans to reduce car-use contingent on such goals, car users consider a range of adaptation alternatives including more efficient car use, suppressing trips, and switching travel mode. These adaptation alternatives, it may be argued, are implemented sequentially over time according to a cost-minimisation principle. A focus group study was conducted gauging the creativity of car-using households when contemplating adaptation alternatives, followed by an Internet-based questionnaire study in an attempt to obtain quantitative estimates of the size of car-use reduction goals and frequency of implementation of adaptation alternatives. The data revealed that the effects of travel demand management measures and trip purpose on the setting of car-use reduction goals were small. While the cost-minimisation principle seemed to dictate stated choices of adaptation alternatives, further research needs to examine the ways in which the principle must be qualified.

  • Happiness in the stock market
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Paper presented in the workshop Happiness, economics, and interpersonal relationship, University of Trento, Italy.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report laboratory experiments aimed at studying how happiness may be related to value changes in owned stock shares. For fictitious descriptions presented in booklets, undergraduate participants indicate how happy they would be if their stock shares increase in value. One set of findings is that happiness increases with absolute as well as relative increases in the value of stock shares. Furthermore, the nominal representation of values (currency) appear to impact happiness. The results are consistent with our previous research demonstrating that the nominal representation of the value of money affects judgments and evaluations

  • Household consumption: Influences of aspiration level, social comparison, and money management
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Economic Psychology. ; :25, s. 753-769
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present research posits and tests a model of household consumption of less necessary or luxury goods and services. It is hypothesized that a households economic situation has a direct effect on this consumption as well as indirect effects mediated by aspiration level, social comparison and money management. Structural equation modeling of questionnaire data from a sample of households in a metropolitan area of Sweden (n = 411) was used to test the model. The results reveal that as expected the households economic situation has a significant direct effect on consumption and indirect effects through aspiration level and social comparison. The results also show that satisfaction with consumption increases with increased consumption and decreases with higher aspiration levels
