    • The significant potential for so-called “smart textiles” in the design of the next generation of devices that measure pressure, tension, moisture, and heat at the humanehorse interface is discussed in this article. Research techniques from theoretical and experimental physics laboratories, combined with wireless technology, can be readily adapted to measure and store metrics for numerous variables in equine structure and function. Activities, such as breathing, the extension and flexion of joints, limb kinematics, and cardiac function, can be logged as indicators of physiological and behavioral conditioning (training). Such metrics may also, one day, support veterinary diagnostics but also play a role in safeguarding sporthorse welfare, especially in elite contexts where the horse may be pushed to its functional limits. As such, they are likely to emerge as an area of great interest to equitation and welfare scientists. It is important to note that smart textiles sense and react to exogenous stimuli via integrated sensors. So, beyond the equitation science laboratory, the emergence of polymers and smart materials may enhance the effectiveness of, or challenge us to completely rethink, traditional items of saddlery, thus improving equitation. The integration of smart textiles in all sorts of extant and emergent equipment for everyday equestrians could, in the future, lead to equipment that responds appropriately to the demands of equitation in its various forms. Rethinking equitation through physics and the use of smart textiles seems to have merit in that it is a novel means of both investigating and addressing problems that compromise the welfare and performance of horses. The purpose of this article is to envision the use of smart textiles in research, clinical, equestrian, and horse care contexts.

  • Demo-scale production of protein-rich fungal biomass from potato protein liquor for use as innovative food and feed products

    • Innovative food and feed products have recently attracted the attention of both producers and consumers. Filamentous fungi are important biomass producers with their high protein contents. In this study, fungal biomass production from edible potato protein liquor (PPL), generated during starch production processes, was investigated through different fungal strains (Rhizopus oryzae, R. oligosporus, R. delemar, Aspergillus oryzae and Neurospora intermedia). The effects of PPL concentration, incubation time, initial pH, and cultivation conditions (in shake flaks and different scale reactors) were examined to determine the amount of biomass and its crude protein level. It was determined that the fungal biomass produced by R. delemar in industrial scale contained 53% crude protein. For this strain, the amino acid and fatty acid profiles as well as metals (iron, manganese, copper, and zinc) of the produced biomass were also investigated to assess possible use as a food or feed source. The R. delemar fungal biomass can be a promising raw material for feed and food production, for example, considering its protein and fatty acid profiles with 41% essential amino acids and 33% polyunsaturated fatty acids.

    • Fusarium species are the primary fungal pathogen affecting agricultural foodstuffs both in crop yield and economic loss. Due to these problems, control of phytopathogenic fungi has become one of the critical problems around the World. Nanotechnology is a new technology with potential in many fields, including agriculture. This study focused on determining potential effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with different nanosizes (3, 5, 8 and 10 nm) and at different concentrations (12.5–100 ppm) against phytopathogenic Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici (FORL) strains. The maximum antifungal activity was achieved by decreasing nanosize and increasing concentration of AgNPs. Mycelium growth abilities were decreased about 50%, 75% and 90% by AgNPs treatment with 3 nm sizes at 25 ppm, 37.5 ppm and 50 ppm concentrations, respectively. The productivity of fungal biomass in the liquid growth media was found to be too limited at the 25–37.5 ppm of AgNPs concentrations with all sizes. In addition, both septation number and dimensions of micro- and macroconidia were found to be gradually decreased with the application of silver nanoparticles. This work showed that the low concentration of AgNPs could be used as potential antifungal agents and applied for control of phytopathogens.

  • Succession of keratin-degrading bacteria and associated health risks during pig manure composting

    • The alteration of microbial dynamics and their divergence were evaluated in bristles containing pig manure (PM) compost with different concentrations of coconut shell biochar [0% (T1), 2.5% (T2), 5.0% (T3), 7.5% (T4) and 10% (T5)] amendment. The results revealed that the CB amendment significantly increased the keratin degradation efficiency and bacterial diversity during composting. The richest bacterial diversity and the highest keratin reduction of 39.1% were observed in the PM compost with a 7.5% CB amendment. The most abundant phyla were Firmicutes and Actinobacteria (which accounted for 87.91% and 12.09%, respectively), and the superior genera were Bacilli and Clostridia (which accounted for 23.52% and 61.17%, respectively). In addition, a dimensionality analysis from principal coordinate’s analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling showed that the bacterial community had a significant divergence among the different dosages of CB. Furthermore, the correlation found in a canonical correspondence analysis illustrated that the physio-chemical environmental factors were more relevant for the bacterial community within the CB in the compost than in that in the control sample. Overall, the application of biochar for composting altered the typical selectivity for functional bacteria and further influenced the organic waste biotransformation during bristle-containing PM composting.     • Patchouli oil is an essential oil extd. from arom. crop Pogostemon cablin and is widely used in perfumery industry, food industry, and/or even as medicine. The leaves have 4.6% oil that is extd. by steam, but remains an enormous amt. of wastes contg. ca 0.8% oil. Patchouli waste is an interesting substrate for methane prodn. However, the oil has been found to have antibacterial activity. The inhibition of patchouli oil on anaerobic digestion was investigated in this study under thermophilic conditions (55 °C). The patchouli oil showed antibacterial effect, where addn. of 0.05, 0.5 and 5 g/L patchouli oil reduced biogas prodn. by 16.2%, 27.2% and 100% resp. As patchouli oil is a lipophilic compd., hydrophilic polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membrane was used to protect the microorganisms against this inhibitor in a reverse membrane bioreactor (rMBR) system. The methane yield of fresh plant and waste were 86 and 179 NmL CH4/gVS, resp. when using free cells. Although using solely an rMBR did not give significant rise to methane yield, the combination rMBR and free cell strategy to protect part of the digesting microorganisms against this inhibitor considerably enhanced the methane prodn. by 73% for fresh patchouli plant, compared to digestion using free cells.   • Effect of biochar and bacterial inoculum additions on cow dung composting

    • The present study evaluates the effectiveness of different types of biochar additives and bacterial inoculation on gaseous emission, nutrient preservation, and relevant functional bacterial community during cow manure composting. The result revealed that biochar and bacterial consortium inoculation effectively inhibited gaseous emission and improved carbon and nitrogen sequestration, remarkably enriching the abundance of the functional bacteria community. Notably, superior efficacy was found in 12% wheat straw biochar and bacterial consortium amendment composting of T6 with the lowest cumulative CO2-C and NH3-N (308.02 g and 12.71 g, respectively), minimal total C and N losses, and the highest bacterial population. Additionally, gaseous emission exhibited a strong correlation between physicochemical properties with intersection of 66.78% and a unique substrate utilizing bacterial communities. Consequently, the integrated application of biochar and bacterial consortium inoculation was suggested as an efficient method to adjust microbial activity and facilitate cellulose-rich waste degradation, enabling efficient management of organic waste from cow manure and wheat straw by composting.

  • Improved Anaerobic Digestion by the Addition of Paper Tube Residuals: Pretreatment, Stabilizing, and Synergetic Effects

    • This study deals with the addition of paper tube residuals to a nitrogen-rich mixture of organic waste obtained from industrial and municipal activities. This nitrogen-rich mixture, called buffer tank substrate (BTS) in the following text, is used in a large-scale biogas plant. The effects were investigated in semi-continuous co-digestion processes, and variations in operational conditions were studied. The addition of paper tubes had stabilizing effects, prevented the failure of the process, and made it possible to decrease the hydraulic retention time from 25 to 20 days. Furthermore, synergetic effects were found, with 15-34% higher methane yields, when paper tubes were co-digested with BTS. Moreover, steam explosion pretreatment of the paper tube waste with the addition of 0-2% NaOH was evaluated by batch digestion experiments. Increasing the NaOH concentrations used in the pretreatment resulted in increasing methane yields, with the highest of 403 N mL of CH4 g(-1) of volatile solids (VS) corresponding to an increase by 50% compared to that when untreated paper was digested (268 N mL of CH4 g(-1) of VS). The long-term effects of this best pretreatment were further investigated by continuous co-digestion experiments, leading to a higher methane yield when pretreated paper tubes were used in the co-digestion process compared to untreated.

  • Increased noise levels cause behavioural and distributional changes in Atlantic cod and saithe in a large public aquarium—A case study

    • Abstract Investigating the effects of underwater noise on aquatic animals is a research field that is receiving rapidly increasing attention. Despite this, surprisingly few studies have addressed the potential impacts of noise in a marine animal husbandry setting. In this regard, the behaviour of fish in public aquariums can be used as an indicator of well-being, and noise is known to cause behavioural changes. This case study investigates the behaviour of cod (Gadus morhua) and saithe (Pollachius virens) in a large public aquarium when exposed to increased noise levels originating from an aquarium renovation carried out by construction divers. Swimming behaviour, group formation and vertical distribution, along with yawning and scratching frequencies of the fish, were analysed from video recordings made before, during and after the exposure to increased noise levels. The same parameters were also analysed to evaluate potential effects of the presence of divers when not making renovation noise, compared to fish behaviour prior to the renovation. There was a slight change in the depth distribution of both species and a decrease in the number of scratches in cod due to the presence of divers that were not making renovation noise. In the presence of construction noises in the tank, however, both cod and saithe showed a wider array of behavioural changes, including increased swimming speed, changes in depth distribution and increased yawning frequencies. The results from this case study demonstrate that an underwater renovation with increased noise levels impacts fish behaviour and suggests that underwater noise should be considered during the management of aquatic environments, including public aquaria.
