  • The S.A.R.E.K Simulation Environment : Technical description of a flexible training environment for prehospital care
  • 2017
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report contains a technical description of the result of the S.A.R.E.K (Simulation – Ambulance – Research – Education - Kinship) collaboration project and the Sim2020 project. The projects are collaborations between researchers in healthcare and IT, and prehospital care practitioners, with the aim to design, develop and test a contextualized simulation environment for prehospital care. We built a simulation environment representing the full depth and width of a prehospital care process. Breadth refers to including all phases of a prehospital mission, from dispatch to handover; while depth refers to detailed representations and recreation of artefacts, information and context for each of these phases. This report outlines the details of the overall design, all equipment and practical solutions used to create this.  Apart from the installation which is described in this report we have also developed methods and carried out a variety of tests and experiments which are reported elsewhere. The focus of this report is the system and its components.

  • A founder’s heritage : the development of psychological ownership
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • ObjectivesIs a founder “leaving” an organization by selling it, or are there aspects of the founder left even though, the founder does not have a formal occupation or ownership in the organization? Will there be a legacy of the founder and how will this affect the psychological ownership? What is the founder’s heritage from a psychological ownership perspective? The purpose is to understand the consequences of a business sale of the founder and from a psychological ownership perspective.Prior WorkDrawing on the work of psychological ownership and founder heritage, the work combines important literatures to shed light on an important empirical phenomenon, i.e. the exit of a founder/entrepreneur and its consequences for the organization.ApproachThis study follows a single case study approach and draws on rich empirical material from semi-structured interviews and extensive archival data.ResultsWe show how central activities are affected by a founder’s heritage over long time after the formal exit has taken place. We illustrate the development of a founder’s psychological ownership before and after he has formally sold the legal ownership.Implications and ValueThe paper aims at contributing to the entrepreneurial and founder exit-literature by adding a process perspective. Unlike it is sometimes assumed in the entrepreneurship literature is an exit not necessarily a clear-cut and once and for all decision. The paper contributes also psychological ownership literature by highlighting its continuity after the formal sale of the legal ownership and its consequences for the organization.

  • Inconsistency : Friend or Foe
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The International Joint Conference on Neural Networks. - : IEEE Press. - 142441380X - 9781424413805 - 9781424413799 ; , s. 1383-1388
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One way of obtaining accurate yet comprehensible models is to extract rules from opaque predictive models. When evaluating rule extraction algorithms, one frequently used criterion is consistency; i.e. the algorithm must produce similar rules every time it is applied to the same problem. Rule extraction algorithms based on evolutionary algorithms are, however, inherently inconsistent, something that is regarded as their main drawback. In this paper, we argue that consistency is an overvalued criterion, and that inconsistency can even be beneficial in some situations. The study contains two experiments, both using publicly available data sets, where rules are extracted from neural network ensembles. In the first experiment, it is shown that it is normally possible to extract several different rule sets from an opaque model, all having high and similar accuracy. The implication is that consistency in that perspective is useless; why should one specific rule set be considered superior? Clearly, it should instead be regarded as an advantage to obtain several accurate and comprehensible descriptions of the relationship. In the second experiment, rule extraction is used for probability estimation. More specifically, an ensemble of extracted trees is used in order to obtain probability estimates. Here, it is exactly the inconsistency of the rule extraction algorithm that makes the suggested approach possible.

  • Predictive Techniques and Methods for Decision Support in Situations with Poor Data Quality
  • 2009
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Today, decision support systems based on predictive modeling are becoming more common, since organizations often collect more data than decision makers can handle manually. Predictive models are used to find potentially valuable patterns in the data, or to predict the outcome of some event. There are numerous predictive techniques, ranging from simple techniques such as linear regression, to complex powerful ones like artificial neural networks. Complex models usually obtain better predictive performance, but are opaque and thus cannot be used to explain predictions or discovered patterns. The design choice of which predictive technique to use becomes even harder since no technique outperforms all others over a large set of problems. It is even difficult to find the best parameter values for a specific technique, since these settings also are problem dependent. One way to simplify this vital decision is to combine several models, possibly created with different settings and techniques, into an ensemble. Ensembles are known to be more robust and powerful than individual models, and ensemble diversity can be used to estimate the uncertainty associated with each prediction. In real-world data mining projects, data is often imprecise, contain uncertainties or is missing important values, making it impossible to create models with sufficient performance for fully automated systems. In these cases, predictions need to be manually analyzed and adjusted. Here, opaque models like ensembles have a disadvantage, since the analysis requires understandable models. To overcome this deficiency of opaque models, researchers have developed rule extraction techniques that try to extract comprehensible rules from opaque models, while retaining sufficient accuracy. This thesis suggests a straightforward but comprehensive method for predictive modeling in situations with poor data quality. First, ensembles are used for the actual modeling, since they are powerful, robust and require few design choices. Next, ensemble uncertainty estimations pinpoint predictions that need special attention from a decision maker. Finally, rule extraction is performed to support the analysis of uncertain predictions. Using this method, ensembles can be used for predictive modeling, in spite of their opacity and sometimes insufficient global performance, while the involvement of a decision maker is minimized. The main contributions of this thesis are three novel techniques that enhance the performance of the purposed method. The first technique deals with ensemble uncertainty estimation and is based on a successful approach often used in weather forecasting. The other two are improvements of a rule extraction technique, resulting in increased comprehensibility and more accurate uncertainty estimations.

  • A theory of venture capital family business (VCFB) : professionalization trajectories
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Venture capital as well as family firms are very heterogeneous populations of firms. Extant literature has studied the interaction and connection between the groups of firms. However, only recently, researcher began to look at those firms which are part of both group at the same. Firms which are labeled venture capital family businesses (VCFB) (Ljungkvist & Boers, 2017). Recent research suggests that the interaction of family firms and VC firms can be distinguished into three separate phases (Schickinger, et al., 2018). Based on these phases, the paper develops propositions on how VCFB firms develop their professionalization trajectories in these phases. Thus, the presented propositions highlight how the family owners’ actions and behavior are related to professionalism and how it influences the three phases of investing.

  • Rapid growth of founder-led companies : the role of resource orchestration
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the role of resource orchestration in rapidly growing founder-led companies.   Design/methodology/approach – Based on a comparative case study of founder-led companies, the resource orchestration in a founder-led family firm is compared with a founder-led one. To comprehend the complexity of resource orchestration, a large amount of archival data and interviews are used. By using data derived from a period of ten years, the present study has a longitudinal approach. Findings – By uncovering the resource management process, the findings indicate a difference in focus between the founder-led family firm and the founder-led firm. The resource orchestration in the family firm focuses to a greater extent on the early stages of the resource management process, i.e. the recruitment of new staff, the incorporation and the control of “right” values and norms. On the other hand, the founder-led business puts a higher focus on performance metrics and the documented coordination of teams and customers. However, both companies rely largely on self-organizing teams. By revealing the management role in a dynamic industry, the present study criticizes and extends general findings of the resource orchestration literature. Moreover, it contributes to the organizational culture and firm growth entrepreneurship literature.       Practical implications – The study shows how founder-based companies can grow successfully in a dynamic environment. Furthermore, it reveals how software companies’ resources can be managed and bundled in a successful manner. Originality/value – the present study conveys fine-grained insights in complex management processes operating in a dynamic environment.
