  • Adapting the queer language of Anne Lister’s diaries
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lesbian Studies. - Philadelphia : Routledge. - 1089-4160 .- 1540-3548. ; 26:4, s. 382-399
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (2010) and Gentleman Jack (2019–2022) are both television dramas based on the private journals of Anne Lister (1791–1840). The diaries were not only partly written in code but make use of idiosyncratic terms, and  the two adaptations deal in different ways with the language used in the diaries. This essay examines the language of Anne Lister’s diaries and compares their two adaptations, The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister and Gentleman Jack, with a particular focus on the use of queer vocabulary. © 2022 The Author(s). • “I’m a slave now, for all my fine clothes” : Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion and the Dido Myth
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Shaw. - State College, PA : Penn State University Press. - 0741-5842 .- 1529-1480. ; 43:1, s. 50-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Shaw’s Pygmalion is commonly thought of as an adaptation of the myth of Pygmalion, the sculptor who fell in love with his own sculpture. However, the name of “Pygmalion” in ancient mythology is shared by Dido’s brother, Pygmalion of Tyre. This article suggests Pygmalion as playing with these two mythological Pygmalions by moving through the play from the myth of Pygmalion the Cypriot sculptor to the myth of Dido, who escapes from her tyrannous brother, Pygmalion of Tyre. It is particularly relevant that Dido’s alternative name is “Elissa,” which in Dryden’s translation of Virgil’s The Aeneid is spelled “Eliza.” Dido, therefore, shares the first name of Eliza Doolittle, the heroine of Shaw’s Pygmalion, who escapes from the arguably tyrannous Henry Higgins at the end of the play. Reimagining Eliza and Higgins as Dido and her brother leads to a reading in line with Shaw’s anti-romantic vision of Pygmalion.

  • '|Y]oung Hamlet' : Shakespeare for Swedish Children
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Critical Survey. - Oxford : Berghahn Books. - 0011-1570 .- 1752-2293. ; 35:4, s. 94-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Shakespeare’s Hamlet has been retold in children’s versions several times in Sweden in recent years. It was the subject of the first episode of the children’s television programme På teatern [At the Theatre], written and directed by Christina Nilsson for SVT in 2001–2002, where Shakespearean actors meet their child or grandchild backstage after a performance to tell and partly enact the story of the play. In 2005–2006, Lotta Grut wrote the plays Lille Hamlett och spöket [Little Hamlett and the Ghost] and Offelia kom igen! [Offelia Come Again!] for the theatre company Unga Roma. In these fairy-tale versions, the children Hamlet and Ophelia are confronted with death, grief, anger, oppression and erasure. This article argues that the På teatern episode is an adaptation of Hamlet while Grut’s two plays are appropriations. © 2023 Berghahn Books

  • ‘What [I] talk about when [I] am running’ : Revetment Running, Ethnography and Econarratological Poetry
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The Ethnographic Edge - Contemporary Ethnography Across the Disciplines. - Hamilton : University of Waikato. - 2537-7426. ; 2:1, s. 9-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, nonhuman poetry is explored. Departing from an autoethnographic project based on audio recordings made while running on revetments, and which  discussed how to give voice to nonhuman actors the possibilities of nonhuman poetry, this text aims at taking it one step further by extracting poetry from the material. Ethnographically, this is discussed in terms of affect, and an 'ethnography to be'. Theoretically, the study has a posthumanist approach, with a specific focus on the econarratology of philosopher Michel Serres. The method and theory are are discussed in tandem in relation to what philospher Peter Sloterdijk has coined 'amphibian anthropology'. By stacking the bracketed words in my transcriptions, four poems emerge in which background sounds, contextual descriptions, corrections and bodily sounds form the content. Each poem is accompanied by a map made from smartphone screenshots. The prose is found to be evocative of the surroundings of the recording, and also resonating with the ideas of human language as derivative of what Serres calls the Great narrative, the story of universe and nature themselves. The proximity to water and rocks discernible in the experiment is seen as a result stemming from practicing the hope-oriented 'ethnography to be'.

  • Temporal auxiliary omission in Swedish - a diachronic perspective
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Grammaticalization meets Construction Grammar. International workshop, 8-9 October 2015, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In Swedish it is possible to omit the temporal auxiliary ha ‘have’, in certain contexts. Infinitival ha can be omitted in modal verb phrases in main clauses (1) whereas finite ha can be omitted in subordinate clauses (2). (1) Pjäsen borde (ha) börjat nu. The play should (have) begun now ‘The play should have begun now’ (2) Hon berättade att hon (hade) sett honom tidigare. She told that she (had) seen him earlier ‘She told me that she had seen him earlier’ The ha-omission phenomenon emerged by the end of the Early Modern Swedish period, i.e. in the end of the 17th century. Traditionally, two explanatory circumstances have been suggested. One is that ha-omission is a syntactic loan from German and the other that it is a written language phenomenon (cf. Johannisson 1945, Platzack 1983, Malmgren 1985). A theoretically grounded description of the origin and evolution of ha-omission is yet to be made. Hitherto only a few synchronic studies within a generative framework have been presented (e.g. Julien 2002). In the last decade diachronic construction grammar has been demonstrated as a useful tool to expose the mechanisms at work within this kind of language change (Traugott & Trousdale 2013, Barðdal et al. in press, Hilpert 2013, Bergs & Diewald 2008). I will present a diachronic study of ha-omission in Swedish and discuss some possible explanations to why the temporal auxiliary is omitted. Could the phenomenon have to do with grammaticalization concerning the auxiliary and/or the participle? Or could it be a matter of constructionalization of the larger constructions in which they occur?

  • Aligning constructicons across languages : A trilingual comparison between English, Swedish, and Brazilian Portuguese
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Constructicography. Constructicon development across languages / edited by Benjamin Lyngfelt, Lars Borin, Kyoko Ohara and Tiago Timponi Torrent. - Amsterdam : John Benjamins. - 1573-594X. - 978 90 272 0100 3 ; , s. 255-302, s. 255-302
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2018 John Benjamins Publishing Company. This chapter addresses interlingual relations between constructions. The perspective is contrastive rather than typological, with an aim towards multilingual constructicon development. Building on previous work on the alignment of frame-based multilingual lexical databases, we explore possibilities and problems for multilingual constructicography. By comparing the dataset of Berkeley's English constructicon to Brazilian Portuguese and Swedish, we discuss the alignment of constructicons vis á vis the existence of more or less equivalent constructions or the deployment of different linguistic strategies in different languages.
