A method to simultaneously measuring the position of more than one surface in metallurgical processes

- A method for measuring the position of at least one surface in a metallurgical process which includes the steps of providing a metallurgical melt, the metallurgical melt including at least a metal portion and a slag layer, providing a signal generator for generating signals at a plurality of frequencies over a frequency band, and providing an antenna for receiving the signals generated by the signal generator and for transmitting circularly polarized radio waves at the plurality of frequencies over the frequency band. The invention further includes the steps of disposing the antenna adjacent the metallurgical melt, transmitting the circularly polarized radio waves from the antenna toward the metallurgical melt, the circularly polarized radio waves being transmitted by the antenna at the plurality of frequencies over the frequency band, receiving reflected images of the transmitted radio waves through the antenna, the received reflected images of the transmitted radio waves having a substantially opposite circular polarization from the transmitted circularly polarized radio waves, determining a phase displacement between the transmitted radio waves and the received reflected images of the transmitted radio waves, transforming the determined phase displacement from a frequency to a time plane, and determining from the time plane transform a position of at least one surface of at least one of the metal portion and the slag layer.

Method for measuring temperature of at least one of gas and a flame in a combustion process

- A measuring technique and method are provided to simultaneously determine the molecular density of several molecular species and the temperature within a closed process room in a melting or combustion process. In such processes in the industry, e.g. in metallurgic process industry, it is important to determine the temperature and the contents within the gas or flame without physically connect to or disturb the process. This has shown to raise large problems especially at high temperatures. The radio signal over a frequency band is measured on the outside of the process room through a window in the mantel covering as a function of frequency and registered on a computer as a radio spectrum. The system is calibrated by using a known signal transmitted through the process room. The spectral lines are identified by their frequency from a database. The temperature is determined from several lines of the same molecular specie and the molecular densities are determined from the intensities of the lines. The method is suitable to determine vibrational and rotational excitation of molecular species in the radio wavelength range of 500 m et 30 m. The densities of molecular species and the temperature can be imaged in three dimensions inside the process room or exhaust channel if interferometers are used for simultaneous two dimensional imaging from several azimuth directions.

A Device for Conversion of a Binary Floating-Point Number into a Binary 2-Logarithm or the Opposite

- The present invention concerns a device for conversion of a binary floating-point number into a binary fix-point 2-logarithm number or the opposite. This is done in the case of conversion of a binary floating-point number by making the invention include an input register where the floating-point number is stored, an output register for the calculated logarithm, a device that transfers the exponent of the floating-point number from the input register to the output register, where it directly forms the characteristic of the logarithm, a device that transfers the fractional part of the mantissa of the floating-point number from the input register to an adder and also to one or more part circuits that forms additional parts, a device that transfers the additional parts to the adder, said adder that adds the fractional part of the mantissa of the floating-point number and said additional parts and a device that transfers the sum from the adder to the output register where it forms the fractional part of 2-logarithm. Further, the part circuit or part circuits is arranged to be able to use different scale factors in different computing intervals. The conversion from a logarithm is carried out in a similar manner and with the same components.

System and Method for Dynamic Sharing of Connection Resources

- A system and method for the efficient utilization of core telecommunications resources (including both switching and transport resources) during a datacom session over a connection-oriented telecommunications system is described. First, the telecommunications resources along a connection path are partitioned into two or more segments. One or more pause sensors placed along the connection path detect periods of inactivity in an connection. Whenever such a period of inactivity is detected, the pause sensor selectively causes the release of core telecommunications resources for reallocation to active applications, typically by deactivating one or more segments. When wake-up sensors detect renewed activity over the connection, then the dormant connection is reactivated by reallocating core physical resources. The dynamic connection technique of the present invention can be used both with analog (inband) signaling systems (e.g., Plain Old Telephone Service) as well as with digital signaling systems (e.g., Integrated Services Digital Network). The deactivation and reactivation of core telecommunications resources can be performed using various priority schemes.

The problem domain is first partitioned into tasks that are assigned to distinct software program modules. In one embodiment, each of the software modules have multiple output ports. Each output port provides a mechanism to link the software module to a specific version of a different program module. The multiple output ports are used to selectively link the module to one of several versions of a different program module. The linking is performed as early as system design time or as late as run-time, or at any intermediate time between the two. The use of output ports makes software modules less dependent on each other and also simplifies the "hot-swapping" or dynamic replacement of one module by another at run-time. In an alternative embodiment, each of the software modules has a unitary output port where each output port comprises an array of linking records. Each linking record has as many linking variables as there are versions of the receiving module.

- The principal impediment to achieving interoperability, modifiability, implementation-independence and the reuse of object-oriented software components is the strong coupling between objects. The preferred solution to this problem involves adding an output port to each object and further making this additional output port part of a new software development approach that is an extension of the object-orientation paradigm. The resulting component-oriented software development environment provides the level of indirect addressing that is needed to manage the design requirements of interoperability, modifiability and implementation-independency. Another solution to the decoupling problem includes requiring each object to address other objects only indirectly, such as by using specific interface objects. Several variants of this technique have been detailed, described and compared in this patent application. Each of these techniques may be applied in different parts, or at different levels, of a software system.
