    • Application specific architectures are highly desirable in embedded parallel computing systems at the same time as designers strive for using one embedded parallel computing platform for several applications. If this can be achieved, the cost can be decreased in comparison to using several different embedded parallel computing systems. This paper presents a novel approach of running several high-performance applications concurrently on one single parallel computing system. By using a reconfigurable backplane interconnection system, the applications can be run efficiently with high network flexibility since the interconnect network can be adapted to fit the application that is being processed for the moment. More precisely, this paper investigates how the space time adaptive processing (STAP) radar algorithm and the stripmap synthetic aperture radar (SAR) algorithm can be mapped on a multi-cluster processing system with a reconfigurable optical interconnection system realized by a micro-optical-electrical mechanical system (MOEMS) crossbars. The paper describes the reconfigurable platform, the two algorithms and how they individually can be mapped on the targeted multiprocessor system. It is also described how these two applications can be mapped simultaneously on the optical reconfigurable platform. Implications and requirements on communication bandwidth and processor performance in different critical points of the two applications are presented. The results of the analysis show that an implementation is feasible with today's MOEMS technology, and that the two applications can be successfully run in a time-sharing scheme, both at the processing side and at the access for interconnection bandwidth.

    • Fingerprint image quality affects heavily the performance of fingerprint recognition systems. This paper reviews existing approaches for fingerprint image quality computation. We also implement, test and compare a selection of them using the MCYT database including 9000 fingerprint images. Experimental results show that most of the algorithms behave similarly.

  • An enhanced Gabor filter-based segmentation algorithm for fingerprint recognition systems

    • An imponant step in fingerprint recognition is the segmentation of the region of interest. In this paper, we present an enhanced approach for fingerprint segmentation based on the response of eight oriented Gabor filters. The performance of the algorithm has been evaluated in terms of decision error trade-off curves of an overall verification system. Experimental results demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method.

    • On-line signature verification for Tablet PC devices is studied. The on-line signature verification algorithm presented by the authors at the First International Signature Verification Competition (SVC 2004) is adapted to work in Tablet PC environments. An example prototype of securing access and securing document application using this Tablet PC system is also reported. Two different commercial Tablet PCs are evaluated, including information of interest for signature verification systems such as sampling and pressure statistics. Authentication performance experiments are reported considering both random and skilled forgeries by using a new database with over 3000 signatures.

    • Several works related to information fusion for signature verification have been presented. However, few works have focused on sensor fusion and sensor interoperability. In this paper, these two topics are evaluated for signature verification using two different commercial Tablet PCs. An enrolment strategy using signatures from the two Tablet PCs is also proposed. Authentication performance experiments are reported by using a database with over 3000 signatures. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

    • Demands for decreased environmental impact from vehicles are resulting in a strong push for decreased engine oil, fuel consumption and weight. New machining and coating technologies have offered ways to attack these problems. Engine oil and fuel consumption are to a great extent controlled by the topography of the cylinder liner surface and it is therefore important to optimise this surface. Recent engine tests have shown a reduction in oil consumption when using cylinder liners with a smoother finish than that given by the current plateau honing. However, engine manufacturers are hesitant to introduce smoother liner surfaces because of fears of severe wear and scuffing. There is also the possibility that smoother liner surfaces may be more sensitive to the choice of piston ring finishes. This paper therefore seeks to investigate the functional performance and resistance to wear of these smooth cylinder liners and the mating top ring surfaces. Copyright © 2005 by ASME

    • Many transport organizations seek to develop seamlessly integrated computing environments. A central problem in attempts to realize such ubiquitous transport systems is the divide that exists between stationary transport management systems and mobile applications such as embedded vehicle sensor networks and in-vehicle services for message handling. Originating from different Innovation regimes, these technologies are heterogeneous in that they rely on different technological platforms and knowledge bases, as well as the institutionalized settings from which they have emerged. This paper assesses how the mobile-stationary divide plays out in practical efforts to develop ubiquitous transport systems in road haulage firms. This assessment is conducted through a multiple-case study that identifies socio-technical challenges associated with this divide. Building on this assessment, the paper contributes a set of implications for enterprise-wide ubiquitous computing environments where coordination of diverse sets of mobile units is central to organizational performance. On a general level, these implications are important for any organization attempting to integrate mobile and stationary information systems.

    • Recent studies depict the general need to increase and improve innovation in the construction industry. Innovation processes are traditionally described and analysed either on a macro level or a micro level. Production in construction is basically project oriented, as opposed to manufacturing industries for which most of these theories are developed. It is not fully sufficient to study innovation from a micro or a macro level due to the effects of the project orientation and the large number of actors in the construction industry. The objective of this paper is to present a model of the construction innovation systems from a sector systems approach. The study rests upon findings in the area of innovation systems in general and construction innovation systems in particular on one hand and construction sector systems analysis on the other. This paper presents arguments for the development of activity based innovation systems at a construction sector level.
