- This paper addresses the performance evaluation of the contemporary UWB WPAN standard. The basic standard functionality is described for which a system model is derived that accounts for the possible errors due to the background noise. Two realistic scenarios of the saturation conditions and the Bernoulli packet arrivals are considered to calculate the system throughput and the mean initial packet delay. The redundancy-based error detection mechanism that is implemented in the standard is discussed that allows the enhancement of the system performance. The obtained results are compared against the simulation which shows a good accordance with the analytical results and a distinct superiority of the introduced enhancement.

- The current paper addresses the problem of the throughput-delay performance of a contemporary WPAN MAC standard. A brief overview of the standard functionality is first presented that allows a system model derivation. Two different acknowledgement policies are described under which the channel operation is considered. Two possible input traffic models are also considered one of them being saturation conditions under which the performance analysis is done that is further verified by means of the simulation. The obtained results show the system behavior as the number of channel users increase and allow the tuning of the protocol parameters to improve the performance.

- The WiMAX standard specifies a metropolitan area broadband wireless access air interface. In order to support QoS for multimedia applications, various bandwidth request and scheduling mechanisms are suggested in WiMAX, in which a subscriber station can send request messages to a base station, and the base station can grant or reject the request according to the available radio resources. This article first compares two fundamental bandwidth request mechanisms specified in the standard, random access vs. polling under the point-to-multipoint mode, a mandatory transmission mode. Our results demonstrate that random access outperforms polling when the request rate is low. However, its performance degrades significantly when the channel is congested. Adaptive switching between random access and polling according to load can improve system performance. We also investigate the impact of channel noise on the random access request mechanism. © 2007 IEEE.

- Modification of the basic random multiple-access model for the case of a centralized reservation-based data network is considered. Substance of the modification is the following. The channel time is composed of equal intervals, which are called frames. Each frame consists of some consequent mini-slots for the transmission of requests, used for the channel reservation, and consequent slots for the actual packets transmission. Upper and lower bounds of Tsybakov’s capacity are estimated for the system. Problem of the optimal choice for the numbers of mini-slots and slots per frame is analyzed. It is shown that these values do not depend on the ratio between the duration of request and packet transmission.
