  • Disturbance history can increase functional stability in the face of both repeated disturbances of the same type and novel disturbances - dataset
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 10:1
  • Annan publikationabstract
    • Climate change is expected to increase the incidences of extremes in environmental conditions. To investigate how repeated disturbances affect microbial ecosystem resistance, natural lake bacterioplankton communities were subjected to repeated temperature disturbances of two intensities (25 °C and 35 °C), and subsequently to an acidification event. We measured functional parameters (bacterial production, abundance, extracellular enzyme activities) and community composition parameters (richness, evenness, niche width) and found that, compared to undisturbed control communities, the 35 °C treatment was strongly affected in all parameters, while the 25 °C treatment did not significantly differ from the control. Interestingly, exposure to multiple temperature disturbances caused gradually increasing stability in the 35 °C treatment in some parameters, while others parameters showed the opposite, indicating that the choice of parameters can strongly affect the outcome of a study. The acidification event did not lead to stronger changes in community structure, but functional resistance of bacterial production towards acidification in the 35 °C treatments increased. This indicates that functional resistance in response to a novel disturbance can be increased by previous exposure to another disturbance, suggesting similarity in stress tolerance mechanisms for both disturbances. These results highlight the need for understanding function- and disturbance-specific responses, since general responses are likely to be unpredictable.

  • Parental effects influence life history traits and covary with an environmental cline in common frog populations
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Oecologia. - : Springer Nature. - 0029-8549 .- 1432-1939. ; 192:4, s. 1013-1022
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Across latitudinal clines, the juvenile developmental rates of ectotherms often covary with the length of the growing season, due to life-history trade-offs imposed by the time-constrained environments. However, as the start of the growing season often varies substantially across years, adaptive parental effects on juvenile developmental rates may mediate the costs of a delayed season. By employing a meta-analysis, we tested whether larval developmental rates across a latitudinal cline of the common frog (Rana temporaria) are affected by fluctuating onsets of breeding, across years. We predicted that larval developmental rate will be inversely related to the onset of breeding, and that northern populations will be more prone to shorten their developmental rate in response to late breeding, as the costs of delayed metamorphosis should be highest in areas with a shorter growing season. We found that the larval period of both northern and southern populations responded to parental environmental conditions to a similar degree in absolute terms, but in different directions. In northern populations, a late season start correlated with decreased development time, suggesting that the evolution of parental effects aids population persistence in time-constrained environments. In southern populations, late season start correlated with increased development time, which could potentially be explained as a predator avoidance strategy. Our findings suggest that local ecological variables can induce adaptive parental effects, but responses are complex, and likely trade-off with other ecological factors.

  • Current status and future opportunities for serial crystallography at MAX IV Laboratory
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Synchrotron Radiation. - Chichester : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0909-0495 .- 1600-5775. ; 27, s. 1095-1102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last decade, serial crystallography, a method to collect complete diffraction datasets from a large number of microcrystals delivered and exposed to an X-ray beam in random orientations at room temperature, has been successfully implemented at X-ray free-electron lasers and synchrotron radiation facility beamlines. This development relies on a growing variety of sample presentation methods, including different fixed target supports, injection methods using gas-dynamic virtual-nozzle injectors and high-viscosity extrusion injectors, and acoustic levitation of droplets, each with unique requirements. In comparison with X-ray free-electron lasers, increased beam time availability makes synchrotron facilities very attractive to perform serial synchrotron X-ray crystallography (SSX) experiments. Within this work, the possibilities to perform SSX at BioMAX, the first macromolecular crystallography beamline at studies from the SSX user program: an implementation of a high-viscosity extrusion injector to perform room temperature serial crystallography at BioMAX using two solid supports - silicon nitride membranes (Silson, UK) and XtalTool (Jena Bioscience, Germany). Future perspectives for the dedicated serial crystallography beamline MicroMAX at MAX IV Laboratory, which will provide parallel and intense micrometre-sized X-ray beams, are discussed.

  • Gaps in current Baltic Sea environmental monitoring – Science versus management perspectives
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Marine Pollution Bulletin. - London : Elsevier. - 0025-326X .- 1879-3363. ; 160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Legislations and commitments regulate Baltic Sea status assessments and monitoring. These assessments suffer from monitoring gaps that need prioritization. We used three sources of information; scientific articles, projectreports and a stakeholder survey to identify gaps in relation to requirements set by the HELCOM's Baltic SeaAction Plan, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the Water Framework Directive. The most frequentlymentioned gap was that key requirements are not sufficiently monitored in space and time. Biodiversity monitoringwas the category containing most gaps. However, whereas more than half of the gaps in reports related tobiodiversity, scientific articles pointed out many gaps in the monitoring of pollution and water quality. Animportant finding was that the three sources differed notably with respect to which gaps were mentioned mostoften. Thus, conclusions about gap prioritization for management should be drawn after carefully consideringthe different viewpoints of scientists and stakeholders. © 2020 The Authors. • A Synthesis of Marine Monitoring Methods With the Potential to Enhance the Status Assessment of the Baltic Sea
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Marine Science. - Lausanne : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-7745. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multitude of anthropogenic pressures deteriorate the Baltic Sea, resulting in theneed to protect and restore its marine ecosystem. For an efficient conservation, comprehensive monitoring and assessment of all ecosystem elements is of fundamentalimportance. The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission HELCOMcoordinates conservation measures regulated by several European directives. However, this holistic assessment is hindered by gaps within the current monitoring schemes. Here, twenty-two novel methods with the potential to fill some of these gaps andimprove the monitoring of the Baltic marine environment are examined. We asked keystakeholders to point out methods likely to improve current Baltic Sea monitoring. Wethen described these methods in a comparable way and evaluated them based ontheir costs and applicability potential (i.e., possibility to make them operational). Twelvemethods require low to very low costs, while five require moderate and two high costs.Seventeen methods were rated with a high to very high applicability, whereas fourmethods had moderate and one low applicability for Baltic Sea monitoring. Methodswith both low costs and a high applicability include the Manta Trawl, Rocket, SedimentCorer, Argo Float, Artificial Substrates, Citizen Observation, Earth Observation, theHydroFIARpH system, DNA Metabarcoding and Stable Isotope Analysis. © 2020 Mack, Attila, Aylagas, Beermann, Borja, Hering, Kahlert, Leese, Lenz, Lehtiniemi, Liess, Lips, Mattila, Meissner, Pyhälahti, Setälä, Strehse, Uusitalo, Willstrand Wranne and Birk.

  • BioMAX the first macromolecular crystallography beamline at MAX IV Laboratory
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Synchrotron Radiation. - Chichester : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0909-0495 .- 1600-5775. ; 27, s. 1415-1429
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BioMAX is the first macromolecular crystallography beamline at the MAX IV Laboratory 3 GeV storage ring, which is the first operational multi-bend achromat storage ring. Due to the low-emittance storage ring, BioMAX has a parallel, high-intensity X-ray beam, even when focused down to 20 μm × 5 μm using the bendable focusing mirrors. The beam is tunable in the energy range 5-25 keV using the in-vacuum undulator and the horizontally deflecting double-crystal monochromator. BioMAX is equipped with an MD3 diffractometer, an ISARA high-capacity sample changer and an EIGER 16M hybrid pixel detector. Data collection at BioMAX is controlled using the newly developed MXCuBE3 graphical user interface, and sample tracking is handled by ISPyB. The computing infrastructure includes data storage and processing both at MAX IV and the Lund University supercomputing center LUNARC. With state-of-the-art instrumentation, a high degree of automation, a user-friendly control system interface and remote operation, BioMAX provides an excellent facility for most macromolecular crystallography experiments. Serial crystallography using either a high-viscosity extruder injector or the MD3 as a fixed-target scanner is already implemented. The serial crystallography activities at MAX IV Laboratory will be further developed at the microfocus beamline MicroMAX, when it comes into operation in 2022. MicroMAX will have a 1 μm × 1 μm beam focus and a flux up to 1015 photons s with main applications in serial crystallography, room-temperature structure determinations and time-resolved experiments.

  • Bryophyte cover and richness decline after 18 years of experimental warming in alpine Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Aob Plants. - Oxford : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2041-2851. ; 12:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change is expected to affect alpine and Arctic tundra communities. Most previous long-term studies have focused on impacts on vascular plants, this study examined impacts of long-term warming on bryophyte communities. Experimental warming with open-top chambers (OTCs) was applied for 18 years to a mesic meadow and a dry heath alpine plant community. Species abundance was measured in 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2013. Species composition changed significantly from original communities in the heath, but remained similar in mesic meadow. Experimental warming increased beta diversity in the heath. Bryophyte cover and species richness both declined with long-term warming, while Simpson diversity showed no significant responses. Over the 18-year period, bryophyte cover in warmed plots decreased from 43 % to 11 % in heath and from 68 % to 35 % in meadow (75 % and 48 % decline, respectively, in original cover), while richness declined by 39 % and 26 %, respectively. Importantly, the decline in cover and richness first emerged after 7 years. Warming caused significant increase in litter in both plant communities. Deciduous shrub and litter cover had negative impact on bryophyte cover. We show that bryophyte species do not respond similarly to climate change. Total bryophyte cover declined in both heath and mesic meadow under experimental long-term warming (by 1.5-3 degrees C), driven by general declines in many species. Principal response curve, cover and richness results suggested that bryophytes in alpine heath are more susceptible to warming than in meadow, supporting the suggestion that bryophytes may be less resistant in drier environments than in wetter habitats. Species loss was slower than the decline in bryophyte abundance, and diversity remained similar in both communities. Increased deciduous shrub and litter cover led to decline in bryophyte cover. The non-linear response to warming over time underlines the importance of long-term experiments and monitoring.
