  • Still the same?–Self-identity dilemmas when living with post-stroke aphasia in a digitalised society
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Aphasiology. - Abingdon : Informa UK Limited. - 0268-7038 .- 1464-5041. ; 34:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2019, © 2019 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. Background: Self-identity construction through “stories of self” is highly relevant for people with aphasia, not only because the onset entails a “biographical disruption” but also since their ability to keep their “stories of self” going is reduced. Three dilemmas (constancy/change, sameness/difference and agency/dependency) are known to be central to identity. In a digitalised society like Sweden, self-identity construction, including the navigation of these dilemmas, takes place both online and offline. Nevertheless, research combining aphasia, identity and online issues is scarce. Aim: This qualitative study aims, in terms identity dilemmas, to investigate self-identity construction in working-age persons living with post-stroke aphasia in a digitalised society (i.e. Sweden). Are the dilemmas relevant to the participants, and if so, how do they navigate them online and offline? Methods and Procedures: Nine individuals (three men and six women, aged 24–54 at onset) with mild or moderate post-stroke aphasia participated. The data comprises nine individual audio-recorded interviews and 1,581 screenshots from online observations. Qualitative analyses were performed (vertically and horizontally), combining inductive and deductive approaches. Outcomes and Results: All three dilemmas are relevant to the participants. They construct their self-identity as both the same as they were pre-stroke and changed. They are both the same and different in relation to other stroke survivors (with or without aphasia), i.e. both “disabled” and “normal”. They display both dependency and agency. Thus, they navigate the dilemmas by constantly negotiating what to include in their stories of self. In addition, telling one story of self offline does not imply telling the same story online. Conclusion: The dilemmas are intertwined and highly relevant to the participants. Offline and online settings evoke different ways for them to navigate the dilemmas. Increased awareness of the possible struggle with self-identity dilemmas in people with aphasia, and the possible difference between their online and offline self-identities, should be of value to family members, clinicians and researchers. Further research based on a larger sample is suggested.

    • In Swedish it is possible to omit the nite temporal auxiliary have in subordinate clauses: jag känner en som (har) bott i Berlin, ’I know someone who has lived in Berlin’. Here, the present and past perfect are expressed with only the past participle. Ever since Johannisson (1945) it has been claimed that nite auxiliary omission emerged in Swedish at the end of the 17th century as a syntactic loan from New High German (NHG). This is proposition has later been restated by subsequent researchers (e.g. Platzack 1983, Malmgren 1985). Although the idea that Swedish auxiliary omission emerged due to German inuence has been reproduced in the literature, there has been no explanation of how this transfer might have proceeded in terms of a formal linguistic framework. In this paper I will suggest one. Heine & Kuteva (2005, 2006) have formulated a model for contact-induced syntactic change, namely grammatical replication. Grammatical replication encompasses syntactic structures associated with a certain meaning or function. In the process, a language (R) produces a new structure (Rx) based on the structure (Mx) in a model language (M). When nite auxiliary omission emerged in Swedish, there was a high frequency of equivalent verbless constructions in written NHG texts. German-Swedish language contact during the time is well documented, and I suggest that Swedish auxiliary omission is an instance of grammatical replication.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses structural differences between women’s andmen’s first names from 1915 to 2016. The focus is on phonologicalfeatures such as phonemes, syllables and stress. In addition, certainvariations in the frequency of first names are also examined. The dataconsists of the 100 most common first names for each gender at sevenpoints in time over the period of study.

  • Vad händer med finskspråkiga förnamn i Sverige? : En tentativ reflexion
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Ortnamnssällskapets i Uppsala årsskrift. - Uppsala : Ortnamnssällskapet i Uppsala. - 0473-4351. ; , s. 43-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This is a study that approaches questions concerning first names in a multiculturalcountry, Sweden, from a longitudinal perspective. The names studied are Finnish firstnames that have been used in Sweden over the periods 1900–89 and 2004–13. Despitethe geographical proximity between Sweden and Finland, the languages Swedish and Finnish belong to different families, a fact that is often reflected in first names – giving rise either to completely different names or to specific spellings. This is a pilotstudy that raises more new questions than it answers, and the tentative focus of thediscussion is on name fashions (a revival of Old Norse names and Scandinavianism innaming) and external influences on name giving (immigration). The study shows thatFinnish first names were most frequent in Sweden among citizens born between 1920and 1969. Subsequently, their frequency has shown a marked decline.

  • Ingår i: Studia Anthroponymica Scandinavica. - Uppsala : Kungliga Gustav Adolfs Akademien. - 0280-8633. ; 35, s. 141-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The primary aim of this article is to test the relevance of phonetic symbolism for people's conceptions of gender connotations in first names. Students were asked to grade their perceptions of seven female and male names. Primarily for female names certain phonetic properties correlated with higher perceived degree of femininity. However, the study also showed resistance towards gendering first names and attempts of "undoing gender".© Aldrin 2020

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores how a heterogenous group of first year university students perceive writing in general, academic writing in specific, as well as their own writing proficiency. A questionnaire (n 93) was created basing on theories on academic literacy and writing psychology. The results show varying attitudes among the students which highlight questions of the dimensions of writing, identity and group affiliations. Gender was of little importance, whereas age and self-stated writing skills correlated to some extent with the results. The small scale of the study does not permit far-reaching conclusions, but the results indicate attitudes that could have importance for the development of academic literacy. The study can be used as a start of departure for interventions that facilitate for groups with different backgrounds to participate in higher education. ©2020 Emilia Sturm Aldrin, Monica Eklund och Heike Peter.
