  • Income and education as predictors of stroke mortality after the survival of a first stroke
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Stroke Research and Treatment. - : Hindawi Publishing Corporation. - 2090-8105 .- 2042-0056.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. It is well known that socioeconomic indicators, such as income and education, predict both stroke incidence and stroke mortality. This means that persons in lower socioeconomic positions are less likely to survive their stroke, and there will be a selective survival in the group discharged from hospital after their first stroke. Question. Does socioeconomic position continue to predict mortality, stroke specific, or from other causes, among patients surviving their first stroke in spite of this selective survival? Methods. All persons in Sweden aged 40–59 years who were discharged after a first hospitalization for stroke in 1996–2000 were included (n = 10,487), then followed up until the end of the fourth calendar year after discharge. Data were analysed with Cox regressions controlling for age, sex, and stroke type. Results. Persons with high socioeconomic position, measured by education and income, have lower mortality than those of low position. Education was not significant when adjusted for income, however. The risk of dying was similar for stroke-specific mortality and all-cause mortality, for those with cerebral infarction as well as for all patients. Conclusions. Socioeconomic position predicted stroke-specific mortality also in the selective group of persons who survived their first stroke.

  • När hjälpen finns på Facebook : Om försummade behov och nya hjälpformer
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift. - 0037-833X. ; 99:4, s. 509-521
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Inequalities and migration : Challenges to the Swedish welfare state
  • 2018
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sweden is often pictured as a country with a strong welfare system and low levels of inequality. But it is also described as a country that has undergone fundamental restructurings of its welfare system since the 1990s, and with inequality gaps that are among the fastest growing in Europe. This development is strikingly visible among people with a migration background. The question is how this might be understood. Inequalities and migration set focus on ongoing developments and debates about the Swedish welfare system in relation to migration. It introduces the international reader to ongoing developments of inequalities and migration in Sweden in broad historical and international perspectives. The book also offers in-depth insights to how the dynamics of growing inequality unfolds in regard to a range of phenomena and areas of intervention, including the role of civil society. The selected case studies focus on inequalities and hierarchies with regard to both various forms of cross-border mobility and the increased diversification of Swedish society. The book fills a gap when it comes to English language course literature about contemporary debates regarding social policy and social work in relation to migration in Sweden. At the same time it is well suited for a broader range of readers, including policy makers and practitioners outside of Sweden.

  • People with dementia as active agents in nursing homes : a scoping review
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: SAGE Open. - : Sage Publications. - 2158-2440. ; 13:2
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • People with dementia (PWD) are fragile and need aid and care in their daily lives. This scoping review explores the extent to which PWD can be involved in society and their daily lives. Publications were selected according to PRISMA guidelines. We graded the level of participation/involvement in daily life and research using a five-level participation model developed by Shier. A higher grade means a greater ambition to involve PWD in decisions. Of the 11 included studies, three reached level three according to Shier’s model. The studies describe ways of and potentials for participation, capabilities of PWD, caregivers’ opportunities to foster involvement, and cooperation between PWD caregivers and relatives. Caregivers and managers must have the attitude that PWD can be involved in decisions and caregivers need opportunities to actively promote such involvement. Shier’s model can be a tool with which organizations strive to involve PWD.

  • A retrospective on care and denial of children with disabilities in Russia
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research. - : Stockholm University Press. - 1501-7419 .- 1745-3011. ; 16:3, s. 229-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In tsarist Russia, disability care was little developed, yet showed certain similarities with other European countries. Disabled children received support through charities and private philanthropy. The October revolution of 1917 proclaimed a better future for all the country's citizens. Issues: How did the disability policy discussion change after the Russian revolution? Who took care of the so-called feeble-minded? What did this care consist of? Methodology: Study of political and scientific documentation of the period from the end of the 1800s to 1936, along with reflections on the ongoing situation found in the diaries of the head of one child institution, Ekaterina Gracheva. Outcomes: 'Educable' children received schooling, while 'non-educable' children were placed in separate institutions. This marginalisation was reinforced by the focus on the productive worker. Soviet Russia developed defectology as a science and increased the use of institutional solutions.
