  • Health-promoting factors among students in higher education within health care and social work : a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data in a multicentre longitudinal study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - London : BioMed Central. - 1471-2458. ; 22:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Educational environments are considered important in strengthening students’ health status and knowledge, which are associated with good educational outcomes. It has been suggested to establish healthy universities based on a salutogenic approach – namely, health promotion. The aim of this study was to describe health-promoting resources and factors among first-semester students in higher education in healthcare and social work. Methods: This cross-sectional study is based on a survey distributed among all students in seven healthcare and social work programmes at six universities in southern Sweden. The survey was carried out in 2018 using a self-reported, web-based questionnaire focussing on general health and well-being, lifestyle factors together with three validated instruments measuring health-promoting factors and processes: the Sense of Coherence (SOC) scale, Salutogenic Health Indicator Scale (SHIS) and Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ).Results: Of 2283 students, 851 (37.3%) completed the survey, of whom 742 (87.1%) were women; 722 (84.8%) were enrolled on healthcare programmes, and 129 (15.2%) were enrolled on social work programmes. Most reported good general health and well-being (88.1% and 83.7%, respectively). The total mean scores for the SOC scale, SHIS and OBQ were, respectively, 59.09 (SD = 11.78), 44.04 (SD = 9.38) and 26.40 (SD = 7.07). Well-being and several healthy lifestyles were related to better general health and higher SOC, SHIS and OBQ scores. Multiple linear and logistic regressions showed that perceived well-being and no sleeping problems significantly predicted higher general health and higher SOC, SHIS and OBQ scores. Being less sedentary and non-smoking habits were significant predictors of higher SOC.Conclusions: Swedish students in higher education within the healthcare and social work sector report good general health and well-being in the first semester, as well as health-promoting resources (i.e. SOC, SHIS and OBQ), and in some aspects, a healthy lifestyle. High-intensity exercise, no sleeping problems and non-smoking seem to be of importance to both general health and health-promotive resources. This study contributes to knowledge about the health promotive characteristics of students in the healthcare and social work fields, which is of importance for planning universities with a salutogenic approach.

  • Exploring Experiences of Using SETA in Nordic Municipalities
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Human Aspects of Information Security and Assurance. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030811112 - 9783030811105 - 9783030811136 ; , s. 22-31
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • User behavior is a key aspect of cybersecurity and it is well documented that insecure user behavior is the root cause of the majority of all cybersecurity incidents. Security Education, Training, and Awareness (SETA) is described by practitioners and researchers as the most important tool for improving cybersecurity behavior and has been for several decades. Further, there are several ways to work with SETA found in academic literature and a lot of research into various aspects of SETA effectiveness. However, the problem of insecure user behavior remains revealing a need for further research in the domain. While previous research have looked at the users’ experience of SETA, this study looks at SETA adoption from the perspective of the adopting organization. For this purpose, a survey was sent out to all Nordic municipalities with the intent of measuring if and how SETA is conducted, and how the respondents would ideally like to conduct SETA. The results show that a majority of the participating organizations use SETA and that e-learning is the most common delivery method. However, the results also show that gamification and embedded training is seldom used in practice nor a part of the participants’ picture of ideal SETA.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science. - Cham : Springer. - 9783031480461 - 9783031480478 ; , s. 209-223
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Active mobility, such as biking, faces a common challenge in Swedish municipalities due to the lack of adequate lighting during the dark winter months. Insufficient lighting infrastructure hinders individuals from choosing bicycles, despite the presence of well-maintained bike paths and a willingness to cycle. To address this issue, a project has been undertaken in the Swedish municipality of Skara for an alternative lighting solution using drones. A series of tests have been conducted based on drone prototypes developed for the selected bike paths. Participants were invited to cycle in darkness illuminated by drone lighting and share their mobility preferences and perception. This paper summarizes the users’ perception of drone lighting as an alternative to fixed lighting on bike paths, with a special focus on the impact on travel habits and the perceived sense of security and comfort. Most participants were regular cyclists who cited bad weather, time, and darkness as significant factors that deterred them from using bicycles more frequently, reducing their sense of security. With drone lighting, the participants appreciated the illumination’s moonlight-like quality and its ability to enhance their sense of security by illuminating the surroundings. On the technology side, they gave feedback on reducing the drone’s sound and addressing lighting stability issues. In summary, the test results showcase the potential of drone lighting as a viable alternative to traditional fixed lighting infrastructure, offering improved traffic safety, sense of security, and comfort. The results show the feasibility and effectiveness of this innovative approach, supporting transformation towards active and sustainable mobility, particularly in regions facing lighting challenges.

  • Experiences From a Multi-National Course in Cybersecurity Awareness Raising
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information Security and Cybercrime (IJISC). - : The Romanian Association for Information Security Assurance (RAISA). - 2285-9225 .- 2286-0096. ; 12:1, s. 18-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Union (EU), as well as the entire world, is facing emerging challenges in the cybersecurity domain. Two of the most prominent challenges are citizens’ cybersecurity awareness which is the first line of defense against cybersecurity incidents, and the cybersecurity skill gap expected to lead to a future shortage of cybersecurity professionals. This paper presents an effort to combat those issues through the implementation of an intra-European course on cybersecurity awareness. The course engages university students from four EU member states who learn about increasing cybersecurity awareness while practically developing cybersecurity awareness activities for preadolescents. The paper provides an overview of the course and lessons learned from implementing it in international cooperation. The intention is to provide a guide for the development of such courses and outline success factors others can adopt and pitfalls that should be avoided.

  • Multi-objective optimization of material model parameters of an adhesive layer by using SPEA2
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Advances in structural and multidisciplinary optimization. - : The International Society for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (ISSMO). - 9780646943947 ; , s. 249-254
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The usage of multi material structures in industry, especially in the automotive industry are increasing. To overcome the difficulties in joining these structures, adhesives have several benefits over traditional joining methods. Therefore, accurate simulations of the entire process of fracture including the adhesive layer is crucial. In this paper, material parameters of a previously developed meso mechanical finite element (FE) model of a thin adhesive layer are optimized using the Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm (SPEA2). Objective functions are defined as the error between experimental data and simulation data. The experimental data is provided by previously performed experiments where an adhesive layer was loaded in monotonically increasing peel and shear. Two objective functions are dependent on 9 model parameters (decision variables) in total and are evaluated by running two FEsimulations, one is loading the adhesive layer in peel and the other in shear. The original study converted the two objective functions into one function that resulted in one optimal solution. In this study, however, a Pareto frontis obtained by employing the SPEA2 algorithm. Thus, more insight into the material model, objective functions, optimal solutions and decision space is acquired using the Pareto front. We compare the results and show good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Radial basis functions as surrogate models with a priori bias in comparison with a posteriori bias
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Structural and multidisciplinary optimization (Print). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1615-147X .- 1615-1488. ; 55:4, s. 1453-1469
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to obtain a robust performance, the established approach when using radial basis function networks (RBF) as metamodels is to add a posteriori bias which is defined by extra orthogonality constraints. We mean that this is not needed, instead the bias can simply be set a priori by using the normal equation, i.e. the bias becomes the corresponding regression model. In this paper we demonstrate that the performance of our suggested approach with a priori bias is in general as good as, or even for many test examples better than, the performance of RBF with a posteriori bias. Using our approach, it is clear that the global response is modelled with the bias and that the details are captured with radial basis functions. The accuracy of the two approaches are investigated by using multiple test functions with different degrees of dimensionality. Furthermore, several modeling criteria, such as the type of radial basis functions used in the RBFs, dimension of the test functions, sampling techniques and size of samples, are considered to study their affect on the performance of the approaches. The power of RBF with a priori bias for surrogate based design optimization is also demonstrated by solving an established engineering benchmark of a welded beam and another benchmark for different sampling sets generated by successive screening, random, Latin hypercube and Hammersley sampling, respectively. The results obtained by evaluation of the performance metrics, the modeling criteria and the presented optimal solutions, demonstrate promising potentials of our RBF with a priori bias, in addition to the simplicity and straight-forward use of the approach.

  • Ett särskilt perspektiv på högre studier? : Folkhögskoledeltagares sociala representationer om högskola och universitet
  • 2011

  • Continuing Engineering Education in Changeable and Reconfigurable Manufacturing – Implications of Problem-Based Learning in Industrial Practice
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Engineering Education. - : Tempus Publications. - 0949-149X. ; 39:5, s. 1118-1130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increasingly volatile and complex manufacturing environments make the continuous development of engineering professionals’ knowledge and competences in changeable and reconfigurable manufacturing a major source of competitiveness in manufacturing companies. Enablers of this include modular and platform-based product and manufacturing system design, as well as industry 4.0 related technologies and digitalisation. Therefore, this paper focuses on Continuing Engineering Education (CEE) in changeable and reconfigurable manufacturing and investigates the implications of applying a university-industry collaborative approach to Problem-based Learning (PBL) for CEE in company-settings. The paper builds on a four-year CEE initiative from Swedish manufacturing industry and includes insights from implementing a CEE course in changeable manufacturing, which was designed based on PBL principles and run as an industry-university cooperation for four consecutive years. Implications addressed in the paper relates to (1) PBL as a suitable approach for CEE, (2) Research transfer to industry through PBL-based CEE, and (3) industry-university collaboration for CEE, which provides valuable insights on how to conduct successful CEE in knowledge fields that are fast evolving in order to enable fast industry transitions. # 2023 TEMPUS Publications.

  • Social Representations and Social Identity in Swedish Folk High Schools : an application of Duveen and Lloyd
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Papers on Social Representations. - London : Department of Social Psychology, London School of Economics and Political Science. - 1021-5573 .- 1819-3978. ; 19:1, s. 10.1-10.14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article extends Duveen's work on social representations and social gender identity by discussing how it can be applied to the context of Swedish folk high school participants' social representations of folk high school and university, then examines the influence of these representations on participants' desires and ambitions to progress to university.  Adopting Duveen's framework to analyze several previous data regarding folk high schools (i.e., a document study of folk high school teachers' magazines, an association study on folk high school participants, and interviews with folk high school participants), I seek to illustrate in this article how most premises concerning the formation of children's social identity (as described by Duveen) also hold for adults entering a new social context.
