  • The "New Negro" in the Old World : culture and performance in James Weldon Johnson, Jessie Fauset, and Nella Larsen
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • I denna avhandling studeras europaskildringarna i James Weldon Johnsons The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man (1912), Jessie Fausets There Is Confusion (1924) och Nella Larsens Quicksand (1928) och hur dessa speglar afrikansk-amerikanernas roll i den västerländska civilisationen.

  • Interactive Music Composition
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This dissertation, titled Interactive Music Composition, is a practice based Ph.D. thesis in the field of Musicology. The purpose is to explore if and how one can compose computer based interactive music, that is musically satisfying for an interacting audience, consisting of both laymen and skilled musicians. The text describes the design and reflection in two interactive music installations: Do-Be-DJ, open-air installation in a public park, and, Mufi, with modular and moveable interface. Based on methods and perspectives in Musicology and Interaction Design, a composition model for interactive music is developed. The model investigates the experience dimensions listen, explore, compose and collaborate. It also investigates the design dimensions of interaction, narrative structure, composition rule and sound node. The conceptual approach is to apply improvisation and composition methods from jazz, pop and groove based music on interactive music. It also uses the concepts of openess in musical structures and interpretation, musical mediation of actions and meaning and everyday use of music, when composing interactive music. The dissertation contributes to an understanding of how to create composition techniques for interactive music, such as: Direct, varied and shifting response. It reflects on the change in meaning of the musicological terms composition, improvisation, musical work, listener, musician and audience. And on the interaction design terms interaction, gameplay, system and user. The term co-creator is used to describe an actively, interacting and collaborating person, to complement traditional terms like audience, performer and user.

  • Chronic pain : epidemiological studies in a general population
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim was to study the epidemiology of chronic pain (> 3 months duration) and factors associated to pain prevalence, prognosis, health care and medication in a general population. A cross-sectional mailed survey to a random population sample (n = 1806) was followed by a clinical examination and a prospective study of three selected groups. Pain related diagnoses from primary health care was monitored and compared with pain prevalence. The most important findings were: - a high total prevalence of chronic pain, 55.2%, without gender difference but varying by age and socioeconomic level. About one fourth (12.8%) reported high pain intensity and functional impairments. Women experienced pain at more locations and with higher intensity. - in a multivariate analysis increasing age, female gender, low education, high work strain, depression and insomnia were associated with chronic pain. - widespread pain showed a worse 2- year prognosis compared with neck shoulder pain. - musculoskeletal location of pain dominated, myalgia and myofascial pain being the most common symptom descriptions. - co-morbidity with chronic pain was common. More hypertensives and an increased level of serum uric acid associated to widepread pain indicated possible metabolic connections to pain. - smoking (current and previous) was associated with low-back and widespread pain. - chronic pain had a substantial influence of primary health care-seeking and medication; high pain intensity being the most important predictor of care and medication. - pain related diagnoses in primary health care increased between 1987 and 1996. Chronic pain, mainly with musculoskeletal location, is a community health problem. A multi-factorial approach in prevention and treatment on the basis of present knowledge is necessary.

  • Möten där vi blir sedda : en studie om elevers engagemang i skolan
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • AbstractThis thesis concerns students’ engagement with school. In Sweden there are as many as 17,5 % of the students, who after year nine do not get the grades in order to be admitted to the national program at the upper secondary school. In this thesis, Students’ experiences are focused in order to understand engagement with school. The study is grounded in a socio cultural perspective on learning where learning is considered to originate from social actions, as well as theoretical perspectives on engagement. In the thesis learning is seen as development not as a process within the child but rather as development that takes place when the child participates in practices within their cultural community and in relations with others. Learning is looked upon as a perspective where the context of our lived experience of participation in the world is important.  Learning should be seen as social participation. This kind of participation does not only shape what we do but also who we are and who we can become. In this thesis the concept of engagement is considered as both the wanting to do something, and what the student actual do, the agency of the student.  An exploratory sequential mixed method has been used in the data collection, mainly with a student perspective. This means that both quantitative and qualitative methods of collecting and analyzing data has been used to be able to answer the research questions. The overall aim of the thesis is to contribute with knowledge about students’ engagement in school by identifying aspects that influence the engagement. The thesis consists of three different studies. One quantitative study, where 1298 student participated in a survey concerning student engagement with school, which was followed by two qualitative studies, where the descriptive analysis was broadened with interviews, one with students and teachers in two different classes and one with students from eight different schools. Apart from that, students have written reflections on how they experience their learning environments in school.  The discussion concerns whether students in year seven are engaged with their school, both according to the psychological and according to the cognitive engagement. The discussion also concerns what aspects of engagement students and their teachers in two highly engaged classes have experienced. In the study students with different socioeconomically and cultural backgrounds take part. The concepts of students’ participation and influence in their schoolwork is also discussed.

  • Assessments of oral health status in frail patients in hospital
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The general aims of this thesis were to evaluate the usefulness of an oral assess¬ment guide and to determine the oral health status among frail patients in hospital settings. A further aim was to analyze possible factors that may be associated with oral health status, with special focus on the relationship between oral health and nutritional status among elderly rehabilitation patients. The Oral Assessment Guide (OAG) was used in patients with haematological malignancies undergoing chemotherapy. In further studies a Revised Oral Assessment Guide (ROAG) was used among geriatric rehabilitation patients. The inter-rater reliability of the OAG between registered nurses at the ward and a dental hygienist (DH) was good, as well as between a registered nurse and a DH using ROAG. Problems in the oral cavity were detected in all patients with haematological malignancies undergoing chemotherapy. Problems related to mucous membranes, teeth and/or dentures were most frequent. Oral health problems were also a frequent finding among the geriatric rehabilitation patients. The frequency of oral health problems was significantly lower at discharge compared to admission. Oral health problems were more often found among patients that stayed for longer periods at the hospital, were more dependent on help with daily activities and suffered for dysphagia, than among the healthier patients. Oral health problems were more common among the patients being at risk of undernourishment, suspected to be or severely undernourished (UN), than among the well-nourished patients. Problems in oral health status were significantly associated with the occurrence of respiratory diseases, living in special accommodation, being UN and being a woman. The highest Odds Ratio (OR) was found in problems with gums in relation to the occurrence of respiratory diseases (OR 8.9; 95 % CI 2.8-27.8). OAG as well as ROAG were found to be useful for assessing oral health status in frail patients at hospital. Oral health problems were a frequent finding among the patients. The use of an oral assessment tool on a routine basis may facilitate the detection of problems which otherwise can be hidden, and can serve as a guide for initiating individualised oral health procedures.
