  • Klimatkrisen i klassrummet : Reflektioner kring användning av litteratur i undervisning om hållbar utveckling
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Utbildning och Lärande / Education and Learning. - Falun : Högskolan Dalarna. - 2001-4554. ; :2, s. 27-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study shows how climate fiction can offer pedagogical opportunities for encouraging student agency as well as open up constructive discussions about the future in relation to social change and climate justice. In order to test a practical opportunity for such a productive conversation, and to draw out its didactic implications, Swedish teacher trainee students were asked to participate in a group discussion on how climate fiction may be used in the teaching of sustainability in upper secondary school. Specifically, they were requested to contribute to the framing and organization of the discussion of a work of climate fiction, The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline, but they were also asked to reflect on social dimensions of teaching about the climate crisis, such as climate psychology, democracy issues, equality and existential questions. Drawing on the students’ discernments in the discussion, the study finds that insights from climate psychology concerning the importance of problem-focused and meaning-focused coping strategies to handle negative emotions such as worry, fear and hopelessness are relevant for literature didactics.

  • The meaning of health among newly arrived immigrants : A qualitative study from stakeholders’ perspectives
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nordic journal of nursing research. - : SAGE Publications. - 2057-1585 .- 2057-1593. ; 43:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Good health is a prerequisite for individuals to function in everyday life. The same applies to newly arrived immigrants, where good health is crucial for successful establishment. The aim of this study was to describe stakeholders’ experiences of how newly arrived immigrants’ health affects their opportunities to establish themselves in society. The study had a qualitative design where open-ended questions were analysed following Braun and Clarke’s guidelines for conducting a qualitative thematic analysis. The results consist of three themes: Mental health problems, disabilities, and tormenting concerns about absent family members; A precarious life situation related to housing, education, and income; and Deficiencies in responding to health challenges in organisations and in society. Stakeholders face health problems among newly arrived immigrants that they do not have the right skills to deal with. We argue for the presence of nurses in organisations working with newly arrived immigrants, and that nurses’ competence is necessary to capture their needs.

  • Recovering from COVID-19 - A Process Characterised by Uncertainty: A Qualitative study.
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of rehabilitation medicine. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 1651-2081 .- 1650-1977. ; 54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To obtain a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of patients with COVID-19, the recovery process and consequences for everyday life 6 months after hospital discharge. An explorative qualitative study using individual interviews.A purposive sampling was applied to recruit persons who had received inpatient hospital care, were discharged approximately 6 months previously, were of working age and had persistent self-reported symptoms at a 3-month follow-up appointment.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 participants (10 men, 5 women), which were then transcribed and analysed with inductive thematic analysis.Three themes were identified: "Status of recovery - two steps forward, one step back", "Remaining symptoms caused limitations in everyday life" and "Strategies for recovery". Participants indicated the recovery process through 6 months after discharge was a challenging road, often involving setbacks. A wide range of persistent, fluctuating, or new symptoms negatively impacted many areas of daily life, with fatigue and lack of energy being especially prominent. Participants used a variety of strategies to cope and recover. This study increases our knowledge of the lived experiences of COVID-19 based individual experiences. Unexpected symptoms in the recovery process were described and not always possible to forecast.

  • Expectation prior to human papilloma virus vaccination : 11 to 12-Year-old girls' written narratives.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Child Health Care. - : SAGE Publications. - 1367-4935 .- 1741-2889. ; 203, s. 365-373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Expectations prior to needle-related procedures can influence individuals' decision making and compliance with immunization programmes. To protect from human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer, the immunization needs to be given before sexual debut raising interest for this study's aim to investigate how 11 to 12-year-old girls narrate about their expectations prior to HPV vaccination. A total of 27 girls aged 11 to 12 years participated in this qualitative narrative study by writing short narratives describing their expectations. The requirement for inclusion was to have accepted HPV vaccination. Data were subjected to qualitative content analysis. Findings showed the following expectations: going to hurt, going to be scared and going to turn out fine. The expectations were based on the girls' previous experiences, knowledge and self-image. The latent content revealed that the girls tried to transform uneasiness to confidence. The conclusion drawn from this study is that most girls of this age seem confident about their ability to cope with possible unpleasantness related to vaccinations. However, nurses need to find strategies to help those children who feel uneasy about needle-related procedures.

  • Utbildade för filmproduktion : hinder och möjligheter för etablering
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Utbildning & lärande. - Skövde : Högskolan i Skövde, Institutionen för kommunikation och information. - 1653-0594. ; 6:1, s. 30-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Workers who desire employment inside film production come from a variety of experience levels. In Sweden, the opportunities to obtain work in the film production industry are limited and depend on situations and norms defined by the industry itself. The goal of this article is to identify challenges faced by a relatively unknown group of industry workers: those students representing industrial intellectuals who have received higher educational training in film production work, to identify the difficulties and opportunities they face in their transition from education to employment in the industry. This study is a qualitative one, based on interviews with four young adults who are recent graduates of an educational training program for film production work. The respondents were asked to identify levels of uncertainty and competitiveness prevailed and what opportunities and threats existing as important factors in terms of obtaining work. The findings demonstrate that students who are transitioning into careers are met by an environment with high demands for networking and expectation to adapt their performances and lifestyles to the demands of the job. An aptitude for work is often measured by how well workers adapt to the industry’s culture and values.

  • Social Participation as Reported by Civil Servants and Volunteers Working with Newly Arrived Immigrants in Sweden : Qualitative Datafrom a Delphi Study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Identity and Migration Studies. - Oradea : University of Oradea. - 1843-5610. ; 15:1, s. 98-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Primary health prevention regarding social participation for newly arrived immigrants is needed to address challenges when responding to the needs of such immigrants in their new and vulnerable situation. The aim of this study was to describe social participation as reported by civil servants and volunteers working with newly arrived immigrants in Sweden. Open-ended data collected in a Delphi project targeting civil servants and volunteers working within the policy establishment programme was used. Qualitative content analysis was conducted. The findings show that several interacting factors contribute to resources that create perquisites for “going native in the community” and “being part of everyday life” as points of perquisites for how civil servants and volunteers elaborate on social participation for newly arrived immigrants. A focus on the “here and now” and avoiding measures that “put life on hold” are two points of aspects that generate possibilities for promoting social participation in health services.

  • Experienced Nurses’ Motivation, Intention to Leave, and Reasons for Turnover : A Qualitative Survey Study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nursing Management. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0966-0429 .- 1365-2834. ; 2023
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a global nurse shortage, and researchers have made great efforts in trying to unveil the reasons for turnover and how to increase retention. However, such research has had a tendency to study variables related to intention to leave (ITL) or turnover as isolated phenomena. Objective. To simultaneously explore what factors motivate experienced nurses in the workplace and the underlying reasons for strong ITL and high staff turnover within the profession. Design. An inductive qualitative content analysis was used based on data from open-ended survey questions. The data originated from the longitudinal analyses of nursing education/employment/entry (LANE) in work-life study. The qualitative data analyzed in this study were distributed in October 2017-January 2018, to all nurses in three cohorts corresponding to 11-, 13- and 15-year postgraduation. Of the 2,474 nurses answering the survey, 1,146 (46%) responded to one or more of the open-ended questions. Results. The result showed that what motivates experienced nurses, their intention to leave (ITL), and reasons for turnover could be described in the form of five broad categories, namely, organizational characteristics, work characteristics, relationships at work, work recognition, and health issues. There was rarely a one single reason described, rather several reasons needed to be experienced over time for nurses to stay motivated or leave the profession. Conclusions. There is no single reason that makes nurses leave the profession, nor is there one single reason that makes them motivated to stay. Retention and turnover are complex processes and need to be addressed as this, not as a single isolated phenomenon. © 2023 Anna Hörberg et al.

  • Mutual intelligibility of Malay- and Swedish-accented English : An experimental study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics. - Bandung : Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. - 2301-9468 .- 2502-6747. ; 7:1, s. 43-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In using English as an international language (EIL), one important issue is mutual intelligibility among EIL speakers from different language backgrounds. The present study investigates the cross-linguistic intelligibility of Malay-accented English and Swedish-accented English, regarding the three phonetic features – word stress pattern, consonant clusters, and long vowel in particular. We prepared 15 English statements that are evidently true or false if understood, and examined to what extent the three phonetic features are related to 30 Swedish and 38 Malaysian listeners’ understandings of the statements read by a speaker from the other language group. We compared the Malaysian and Swedish listeners’ answers given with understanding as well as processing time to respond. The listeners’ own accounts of their struggles in understanding the speakers’ pronunciations were also analyzed. Results show that Malaysian listeners easily understood Swedish-accented English, while Swedish listeners struggled to understand Malay-accented English. The difference between the two groups of listeners seems to be closely related to the degree of the realization of the three phonetic features by the speakers as well as to the degree of the use of these features as perceptual cues by the listeners. Based on the findings, we discuss potential phonetic core features of EIL for intelligibility and some pedagogical implications for teaching English pronunciation to the learners of the language.

  • Konsten att välja rätt spårvagn : En studie av segregation, skolval och unga människors studieplaner
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - : Sveriges sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 47:1, s. 51-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • When discussing barriers to integration and young people's choice of school, research often focuses on language skills, cultural capital, supportive environments and other more obvious, distinct and material aspects that have an impact on educational achievement. In the present study, we have instead chosen to look at how young immigrants construct their inner career landscapes and life-plans, and how this relates to their perception of ethnicity, neighbourhood and identity. The sample used here consists of altogether twenty individuals. The interviews were used to explore certain designated dimensions and processes. All interviews were conducted in the school environment, in classrooms and other locations. The students attended two different inner-city schools. A narrative-sociological approach is used in the analysis. The young people's perceptions and narratives are analysed in relation to concepts such as: territorial stigmatization, identity, self-perception and modifications of life plans. The findings show that the feelings of otherness which originates in housing conditions, experiences of exclusion and the everyday life of many immigrants, are transposed into the school area and transformed into strategies and life plans.
