  • Readiness or resistance? : Newly arrived adult migrants' experiences, meaning making, and learning in Sweden

    • This thesis is about newly arrived adult migrants’ meaning making and learning in Swedish society during the two years’ introduction period, after they have received the residence permit. I have specifically studied Arabic speaking adults’ meaning making and learning, by carrying out observations and individual in-depth interviews with 12 migrants. The introduction period consists mainly of three so called introduction measures; the civic orientation course, Swedish for immigrants (SFI), and different work related activities, such as internship at different work places.The results show that etablering is about shaping the newly arrived adult migrants into ”good” citizens, through the introduction measures, among other things in the civic orientation course, which is regulated through the policy documents, and which so to say provides meaning to the newly arrived. The “good” citizen has some specific characteristics, which, roughly, are that he or she is independent (and advocates individuality), free, equality thinking, secularized, law-abiding (which includes being honest), responsible, and a “good” parent. These characteristics are expressed in different ways in the civic orientation course, for instance through the course material. The Swedish society is described as something desirable, and different from what is implied to be ”Arabic” values and ways of thinking. The idea of the “good” citizen appears to aim at constructing the adult migrants’ (and their families’) identity, something which many of the study’s respondents make a resistance to.As concerns the migrant’s new experiences, it is, for example, those which the migrant get through the contact with the Swedish Public Employment Service (SPES) that affect the meaning making in the new society. The meaning which most of the respondents have made of the SPES’s measures for them is that this authority only offers “prepackaged” solutions, and does not provide the help or support that they need. Also the experiences which the migrant has in the civic orientation course, and the meaning which ”old” migrants give to him or her, play a role when he or she makes meaning of Sweden and Swedes, and of his or her new life situation. Further, it has been shown that it is those experiences that the adult individual has been socialized through, and those which he or she has gained through work or education in his or her country of origin, which affect his or her meaning making in Sweden. It is mostly values which concern child upbringing and religion that lead to a certain understanding and construction of one’s new life. These values, when related to the values which are included in the ”good” citizen idea, also lead to either a resistance or a readiness towards the meaning giving that is embedded in the ”good” citizen notion.

  • Processability of Laser Powder Bed Fusion of Alloy 247LC-Influence of process parameters on microstructure and defects

    • This thesis is about laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) of the nickel-basedsuperalloy Alloy 247LC. Alloy 247LC is mainly used in gas turbine blades and processing the blades with L-PBF may confer performance advantage over the blades manufactured with conventional methods. This is mainly because L-PBFis more suitable, than conventional methods, for manufacturing the complex cooling holes in the blades. The research was motivated by the need for academia and industry to gain knowledge about the processability of the alloy using L-PBF. The knowledge is essential to eventually solve the problem of cracking encountered when processing the alloy. In addition, dense parts with low void content should be processed and the microstructure and properties should meett he required performance. Heat-treatment is usually performed to acquire final properties, so it is also of interest to study this aspect. Thus, the thesis answered some of the important questions related to process parameter-microstructure- property relationships.

  • Edge Geometry Effects on Entry Phase by Forces and Vibrations

    • Intermittent machining is in general strongly related to the large impacts in the entry phase and related vibrations. The influence of the impact forces and vibrations on the cutting process is dependent on workpiece material, structural properties of the tool-workpiece system, cutting edge geometries and cutting parameters. Cutting forces adopt generally a periodic behaviour that gives rise to forced vibrations. In addition, self-induced vibrations may arise because of lowrigidity and insufficient damping in the tool-workpiece system at specific cutting parameters. The ability of the cutting tool to carry the loads during the entry phase and minimize the vibrations is often the key parameter for an effective machining operation.This research work is based on the experiments, analytical studies and modelling. It was carried out through six main studies beginning with a force build-up analysis of the cutting edge entry into the workpiece in intermittent turning. This was followed by a second study, concentrated on modelling of the entry phase which has partly been explored through experiments and theory developed in the first study.The third part was focused on the influence of the radial depth of cut upon the entry of the cutting edge into the workpiece in a face milling application. The methodology for the identification of unfavourable radial depth of cut is also addressed herein. Next, effects of the cutting edge on the vibrations in an end milling application were investigated. This study was related to a contouring operation with the maximum chip thickness in the entry phase when machining steel, ISO P material.The results of this work provide some general recommendations when milling this type of workpiece material. After that, the focus was set on the dynamic cutting forces in milling. The force developments over a tooth engagement in milling showed to be strongly dependent on the cutting edge geometry. A significant difference between highly positive versus highly negative geometry was found.The implication of this phenomena on the stress state in the cutting edge and some practical issues were analysed. Finally, the role of the helix angle on the dynamic response of a workpiece was investigated. The modelling technique using force simulation and computation of the dynamic response by means of modal analysis was presented. Extensive experimental work was conducted to compare the modelling and experimentally obtained results. The modelling results showed a similar trend as the experimental results. The influence of helix angle on the cutting forces and the dynamic response was explained in detail.The research conducted in this work contributes to the deeper understanding of the influence of the cutting edge geometry and the cutting parameters on the force build up process during the entry phase. The presented studies investigate the force magnitudes, force rates and dynamic behaviour of the tools and workpieces when machining at the challenging entry conditions. The methodologies applied are focused on the physical quantities as forces and vibrations rather than the experimental studies that evaluate tool life. The methods and results of the research work are of great interest for the design of the cutting tools and optimization of the cutting processes.

  • Implementation of a New Working Method in Psychiatric Care

    • Background: The implementation of evidence-based methods in hospital settings is challenging and multifaceted. There are several different factors that may affect implementation processes, of which the organisational culture may be one. It is well known that conservative organisational culture can hinder implementations; accordingly, a mix of different organisational cultures is preferable. Aim: The aim of this thesis was to follow the implementation process of an ICF-based assessment tool regarding cultural differences associated with the implementation in a psychiatric clinic. As part of the project, an assessment tool based on the International classifi cation of functioning disability and health (ICF) was developed and implemented. Method: In Study I, three Swedish expert groups participated and analysis of inter-rater reliability was conducted through simulated patient cases. In Study II, data were collected through focus group interviews pre- and post-implementation of the ICF-based assessment tool; thereafter, data were analysed using directed content analysis guided by Normalization Process Theory (NPT). Data from 109 nursing staff who completed the organisational values questionnaire (OVQ) and resistance to change (RTC) were investigated, and the association between the OVQ and RTC was examined with regression analysis (Study III). Patients n=50 representing the intervention hospital and n=64 representing the control hospital answered the Empowerment scale (ES) and Quality in psychiatric care (QPC-IP) (n=45 from intervention hospital and n=64 from control hospital). Staff n=37 at the control hospital answered the OVQ which was presented as descriptive data (Study IV). Results: Inter-rater reliability of the ICF-based assessment tool (DLDA) displayed acceptable kappa values (Study I). The DLDA tool showed the potential for empowering patients. Furthermore, it was considered useful for dialogues, refl ection and for identifying patients’ strengths. Nonetheless, it was diffi cult to implement it in practice due to contributing factors such as time pressure, heavy workload, stress and lack of routine in using the tool (Study II). The intervention hospital was characterised by an organisational culture of trust, belongingness and fl exibility, i.e. a human relation culture. One ward (I.W.3), however, was not dominated by a human relation culture. This ward had an almost equal mix of different cultures (human relation, open system, internal processes and rational goal) (Study III). The results of Study IV were non-signifi cant; however, it indicated that intervention ward 3 proved to be the most prominent ward regarding patient participation and empowerment among the intervention group. The results suggest hospital wards with equal mix of different cultures is more successful than cultural polarisation. Conclusion: Only one of fi ve wards succeeded in implementing the DLDA successfully (ward 5). Ward number three was the most successful of the inpatient intervention wards. The intent of the DLDA method was considered to be good and its use in a psychiatric nursing context can provide structured support in order to improve the dialogue with the patient, but it was not used in practice in all the studied wards. The organisational culture of the intervention hospital was dominated by human relation properties, however with one exception, ward number three. The results tentatively show that organisational culture may affect outcomes of implementation processes. Consequently, it appears that an equal mix of different cultures are more auspicious than cultural polarisations. The results seems to confi rm previous research, where one ward with a balanced mix of different cultures succeeded best to implement DLDA, of the wards representing psychiatric inpatient care. Ward number three did also show the best results in terms of empowerment and patient participation of the intervention wards. Further research aims to continue developing and conducting psychometric testing of the DLDA tool. The DLDAs impact on patient assessed empowerment and patient participation requires studies on larger populations than the current study

  • Methods for improving performance of process planning for CNC machining : an approach based on surveys and analytical models

    • Process planning as an enabler of competiveness is often overlooked, but being one of the principal function in the product realisation flow it holds a key role by combining both product and production requirements into a production concept with respect to the current manufacturing system. As such the capability of process planning to a large extent dictates production cost, lead times, product quality etc. With the introduction of new demands on production, such as environmental impact and process capability, process planning must be able to manage these demands effectively. Accordingly, it is vital to study the effects that up-coming demands have on the act of process planning. The research methods employed in this work include surveys (questionnaires and interviews), industrial case studies and experiments to provide data for models developed. The main finding of this research is that there is a lack of quantified process planning performance knowledge in the industry, which leads to verification problems as to whether changes that are made render anticipated effects. Results of surveys also indicated a low level of digitalisation of product data and limited use of computer aids (CAM, feature-based CAM and PLM) in Swedish industry based on 144 companies' response. A concept to improve process planning performance through operation classification based on process capability indices (Cp/Cpk) was suggested. The role of process planning in designing cost efficient and energy efficient machining operations has been maintained throughout the thesis by showing how tool selection and machining parameters selection influences the possibilities to achieve these objectives. This work has also showed that no inherent contradictions appear to exist between achieving cost efficient and energy efficient machining operations. This thesis has contributed to an enhanced understanding of how process planning improvements can be achieved through a holistic perspective of the process planning function, where both technical and methodological aids are included. It is however essential to understand the current situation of the process planning organisation, its internal/external relations, level of digitalisation, competency level etc. before major changes of the process planning function are undertaken in order to be successful.

  • In case of emergency : Collaboration exercises at the boundaries between emergency service organizations

    • Due to the emergent and dynamic nature of incidents, the complexity of emergency work is often referred to as a challenge for learning. Another recurrent challenge in emergency work is that of collaboration at and across established organizational boundaries involving actors with specific types of expertise who are operating under different regulations and responsibilities. In addition, training emergency service organizations in collaboration remains a challenge. In light of the difficulties and shortcomings that have been identified in major incident responses, the need for exercises for developing and maintaining collaborative response effectiveness prior to the next incident is often highlighted. The overall aim of this thesis is to understand how full-scale exercises can provide conditions for developing inter-organizational collaboration between the police, ambulance and rescue services at the incident site. Learning activities that carry the potential to support and develop collaborative capacity, and how the alignment of distributed expertise can be trained for, were of particular interest. Interviews with participants in eight full-scale exercises with professionals and interviews and observations of one exercise with senior-level students in Sweden served as the empirical base.Central concepts from Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) provided theoretical tools to explore the exercises and understand boundaries between organizations with a wider, systemic approach. The empirical studies show that the participants understood full-scale exercises to be valuable opportunities for becoming involved in response work, making decisions, and acting and interacting in uncertain situations and realistic environments. As in real-life responses, exercises are characterized by the stabilization and confirmation of everyday routines on the one hand, and by improvisation and change on the other hand. The studies also show that exercises tend to focus on specific scenarios,intra-organizational routines, and leadership positions. Infrequent exercises inwhich the participants were only trained in a limited role were perceived to be in adequate for developing preparedness and collaboration. However, the analysis suggested that the way in which exercises were organized and performed had implications for how participants were trained in collaboration.Realizing the potential of boundaries as resources for learning in exercises depends on how boundaries are explicated and approached. Thus, rather than striving to ignore or eliminate boundaries in exercises, the studies illustrated the learning value of explicitly reflecting on the multiple understandings around boundaries. The studies demonstrated that much of the work at an incident site takes place around negotiations. Collaboration at the incident site was not only aquestion about boundary crossing; operational tasks may not always be aligned and have to be prioritized and sequenced. The exercises comprised work situations in which no single motive could explain or determine the collaboration,due to different types of expertise, primary responsibilities and needs forinformation. These factors were understood in terms of the concepts of boundarywork and boundary awareness. These concepts point at a more divergent understanding of collaboration that reaches beyond striving to create mutual understanding between organizations in learning activities. Differences between organizations, such as in terminology, time horizons, priorities, leadership structures, understandings of safety and how intra-organizational decisions and actions could impact the collaborating organizations' work, were central triggers for discussion and negotiation. These differences required explanations in order to make the actions and decisions of one organization understandable and justifiable to another, based on organizational mandates and types of expertise.Giving emergency services the opportunity to work together, to develop an awareness of their expectations of each other in various situations, to use and interpret their own and others' terminologies, and to identify internal hierarchies and motives for prioritizations was essential dimensions of exercises

  • Rethinking Competence : On Performing Digital Transformation

    • Nya fenomen växer fram i takt med att vi införlivar digitala tekniker på arbetsplatsen. Den digitala omvandlingen undersöks här främst i betydelsen av att omvandla affärsmodeller för att skapa konkurrensfördelar. Men det är inte bara den affärsmässiga sidan av den digitala omvandlingen som är viktig. Även andra aspekter, såsom omvandling av arbetsmetoder och kompetenser, har betydelse. Istället för att fokusera på hur företag kan överleva trots ständiga tekniska förändringar ställer jag i denna forskning frågan hur medarbetarna klarar den ständiga förnyelsen på arbetsplatsen. Några av de frågor jag söker svaret på är: Vad består digital kompetens av? Vilka aspekter i arbetet förändras i takt med den ökande närvaron av digitala tekniker på arbetsplatsen? Hur påverkar dessa föränderliga aspekter kompetensen på arbetsplatsen? Varför är medarbetare frustrerade över sin kompetensutveckling, trots att de arbetar framgångsrikt med avancerade digitala tekniker? Hur kan vi främja kompetensutvecklingsprocesser på arbetsplatsen på ett följsamt sätt?Som exempel använder jag två yrken som genomgår en omfattande digital omvandling: digital kommunikation och fordonsteknik. I båda dessa yrken kommer man i kontakt med infrastrukturmässiga digitala tekniker, såsom digitala kommunikationsplattformar och den digitala fordonskontrollplattformen för självkörande funktioner. Genom att fokusera på kommunikationsansvarigas och fordonsteknikers arbete tillhandahåller jag argument för digital omvandling som en utpräglad form av förändring. De fall som presenteras visar också hur arbetet måste organiseras dynamiskt, och hur medarbetare påverkas genom behovet av att förhålla sig till omständigheter som ständigt utvecklas.För att tillhandahålla dessa argument har jag förlitat mig på utförliga data som har samlats in genom 59 intervjuer med medarbetare och chefer, åtta månaders iakttagelser av teknikernas arbete och flera års studier på fältet där jag har följt deras arbete. Baserat på slutsatserna som presenteras i fem akademiskt granskade artiklar, undersöks följande punkter i avhandlingen:Omvandling kontra förändring: Olika aspekter av arbetet omvandlas genom införandet av digitala tekniker. Denna omvandling är ett resultat av en mångfaldig, inre och anbringad utveckling av gränser, förhållanden, innebörder och stödjande viiimetoder på arbetsplatsen. Omvandlingen skiljer sig därmed från förändring i form av utbyte av färdigheter som ett resultat av en toppstyrd implementering av i förväg utarbetade svar på fördefinierade problem.Att uppfatta arbetet kontra att ständigt föreställa sig arbetet: Användningen av digitala tekniker utvidgar det vi kan/bör göra på arbetsplatsen och som ett resultat av det blir kompetens något som inte bara innebär förmågan att förstå de nuvarande arbetsförhållandena utan även förmågan att föreställa sig nya. Förmågan att föreställa sig nya möjligheter uppnås genom ständig utvärdering av nuvarande arbetsomständigheter. Följaktligen omvandlas kompetens genom ständig utvärdering till en pågående process där man reviderar sin förståelse för arbetet. Men uppbyggandet av den här typen av dynamisk förmåga hindras av tänkesätt som historiskt har föranletts av fördefinierade problem och optimala lösningar.Att utföra arbetet kontra kompetens på arbetsplatsen: Heterogena mekanismer krävs för att stödja den ständigt föränderliga förståelsen för arbetsförhållanden. Heterogeniteten hos dessa mekanismer visas i förekomsten av motsatta eller överflödiga åtgärder som alla är oumbärliga för att arbetssystemet ska fungera väl. Resultaten visar dock att det faktiskt har biverkningar att genomdriva en sådan tankemässig anpassningsförmåga och handlingsmångfald. Även om arbetssystemet är lyckat, bedöms individernas utveckling på lång sikt av behovet att förhålla sig till omständigheter som ständigt utvecklas.Att uppfatta kontra att förstå: I arbetssituationer där digitala tekniker införlivas i stor utsträckning är förändring en bestående faktor. För att hantera förändringen krävs därför löpande eftertanke och ständigt övervägande. Det innebär att medarbetarnas inte kan ha ett fast och statiskt tänkesätt för att kunna förstå sitt arbete. Arbetet är i stället en pågående process och medarbetarna måste engagera sig i olika pågående aktiviteter. Det handlar alltså om att fokusera på att förstå snarare än begreppsmässiga tillstånd, och detta visar att stödlösningar måste uttänkas i takt med att arbetsförhållandena förändras. Fördefinierade problem och optimala lösningar blir med andra ord inte lika viktiga.Slutsatserna ovan får konsekvenser för medarbetarnas digitala kompetens. Dessa konsekvenser kan sammanfattas i fyra förutsättningar för förståelsen av digital kompetens:• Digital kompetens, förutsättning 1: När arbetet kring digitala plattformar kräver att medarbetarna utför olika uppgifter på kort tid, och ixi frånvaro av direkta organisatoriska krav, utmanas medarbetarnas kompetens genom behovet av att ständigt dra nya gränser.• Digital kompetens, förutsättning 2: När arbetet kring digitala plattformar kräver att medarbetarna tillmötesgår ett ökat antal heterogena sociala och tekniska faktorer, utmanas medarbetarnas kompetens genom behovet av att ständigt förhålla sig till vad som är värt att medverka i.• Digital kompetens, förutsättning 3: När arbetet kring digitala plattformar kräver att medarbetarna kan hämta mening och mål från ett utvidgat nätverk av kontakter, utmanas medarbetarnas kompetens genom behovet av att ständigt utvärdera relevansen av den aktuella valda vägen.• Digital kompetens, förutsättning 4: När arbetet kring digitala plattformar kräver att medarbetarna ständigt omförhandlar målet och vägen dit, utmanas medarbetarnas kompetens genom behovet av att komma ihåg att stödplaner är verkningsfulla i en specifik tidsbegränsad kontext.

  • Drama and Learning in Nursing Education : A study in first and second cycle

    • Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to explore and describe the nature of students learning through drama in nursing education, in first and second cycle. Methods: Study I was conducted as an integrative review of the literature. Study II was performed as a qualitative phenomenographic study were 16 nursing students was interviewed. In study III 43 group assignment by nursing students in first cycle were analyzed using Qualitative content Analysis. Study IV was conducted as a qualitative phenomenographic study where 15 nursing students in second cycle was individually interviewed. Results: The findings in study I showed that drama can be used effectively in nursing education to enhance students' learning. The summarized results of the empirical studies (II–IV) showed that drama enabled the students to learn about themselves and develop a higher self-awareness. Learning through drama also gave the students opportunities to learn about others by exploring the perspectives of colleagues, patients, and patients' next of kin in fictive nursing situations. The findings showed in addition that drama could make the theoretical course content more concrete and easier to grasp. Learning through drama activated the students' learning by offering them the possibility to be active and explore various roles and scenarios, and by promoting reflection in which they could share experiences with their peers. By participating in drama, the students reached an evolving identification with the profession of a nurse (II–III) and of a specialist nurse in paediatric care (IV). Conclusion: Drama in nursing education has the unique potential to prepare nursing students in both first and second cycle for their future nursing role. Through drama, students are given the opportunity to explore and gain knowledge about how to use theoretical knowledge in practice, about their inner selves, and about other person's perspectives.

  • Metal fusion using pulsed GasMetal Arc : Melt pool modellingand CFD simulation

    • Pulsed gas metal arc is a highly efficient technique used in manufacturing processes like welding and additive manufacturing. It offers high productivity and cost benefits but it is also prone to defect formation when process parameters are not properly controlled and optimized. A deeper process understanding can support achieving improved process control and mitigate these potential drawbacks. Nevertheless, there are still several challenges. For instance, the correlation between the input and output process parameters is non-linear and complex due to the multi-physics nature of the process. In addition, the elevated temperature and the intense radiative emission from the arc, along with the smoke, and the non-transparency of metal, make in-process observation challenging. Modelling and simulation offer a complementary approach to gain a deeper process understanding. In this study, a thermo- and fluid dynamics model was developed, focusing on the melt pool and metal deposition, while simplifying the arc to boundary conditions (decoupled approach). This model incorporates various forces and phenomena such as thermocapillary and electromagnetic forces, melting and solidification, and tracking of surface deformation and droplet coalescence.In the first part of the thesis, the developed model was applied to investigate the effect of workpiece orientations on the melt pool dynamics and reinforced bead geometry in multi-layer gas metal arc welding of a V-groove joint. The comparison of the predicted fusion zone with macrographs obtained from the experiments showed good qualitative agreement. It was found that the force balance in the melt pool changes significantly when changing the workpiece orientation by as little as 20◦ relative to the flat position. This results in distinct melt flow patterns, melt pool shapes, bead geometries, and in some cases, defect formation such as humping, undercut, and insufficient fusion. It was concluded that to avoid these defects a lower angle range is necessary for multilayer welding with the uphill orientation and side inclination.The second part of the thesis focused on analyzing different variants of the model for the electromagnetic force with a decoupled approach. Three commonly used models were compared: (1) the analytical models proposed by Kou and Sun inintegral form, (2) by Tsao and Wu in algebraic form, and (3) the partial differential equations governing the electric and magnetic fields. The comparative investigation was supported by experimental tests that also provided estimates of unknown model parameters and validation data. It was found that the distinct assumptions on which these models rely are not all justified. They resulted inpredicting different melt flow patterns and amplitude of the free surface oscillations, as well as different melt pool shapes and bead geometries. Model (3) is recommended to advance to a predictive melt pool model and was subsequentlyused in the remaining work of the thesis.Furthermore, the literature shows that modeling the effect of pulsed arc on the melt pool using a decoupled approach involves various simplifications. Arc pulsation affects energy and force balance in the melt pool through arc heat flux, arc pressure, and electromagnetic force. A systematic investigation of model variants considering pulsing was conducted using previously documented experimental test cases. The results showed that the influence of arc pressure was insignificant in those cases. However, model variants simplifying arc pulsing to a time-averaged effect underestimated the amplitude of the Marangoni flow and downward flow compared to a more comprehensive approach that considered the time dependence of arc pulsation. Thus, it is recommended to use a meltpool model that accounts for the time-dependent arc pulsation, which was also subsequently utilized in the remaining work of the thesis.The electromagnetic force models discussed earlier assume a stationary free surface when computing the electromagnetic force. However, this force is often at leading order in the vicinity of the arc. In the same region, the metal drop transfer leads to a periodic deformation of the melt pool free surface. In the final part of the thesis, the model was extended to account for free surface deformation when computing the electromagnetic force. This extension was applied to experimental test cases, and a comparison was made with simulation results obtained using the stationary electromagnetic force model. Significant differences in the results were observed, particularly in predicting the experimentally observed fingertip-shaped fusion zone geometry. The proposed improvement in the electromagnetic force model provided better predictions in this regard.
