Exploring the roles of university spin-offs in business networks

- This paper identifies different university spin-off (USO) roles related to resource interaction among business parties. It does so by mapping how USOs become part of business networks in terms of their roles relative to other parties. The theoretical frame of reference focuses on roles and resource interaction based on an industrial network approach to business markets. The empirical research is based on five cases of USOs representing a variety in terms of technology, degree of newness, sector, and area of application. As a result of the analysis, three different roles are identified: the USO as resource mediator, resource re-combiner and resource renewer. These roles reflect how USOs adapt resources to, or require changes among, business parties' resources. The paper also discusses the main resource interfaces associated with the three roles and related challenges. The paper contributes to previous research through illustrating USOs' roles relative to business parties from a resource interaction point of view, and by pointing to the establishment of new companies in business networks as a way of implementing innovation. Finally, the paper discusses the managerial implications of the research in terms of the USO's need to understand which role to take and how to develop it.

- Att vara chef inom en kommunal förvaltning innebär att utgöra en del av kommunens multifunktionella organisering, som i stor utsträckning styrs av lagstiftning. Organisationen är skattefinansierad och förväntas beakta delvis motstridiga krav såsom transparens, representation, kontroll, medbestämmande, likabehandling, öppenhet, offentlighet samt insyn i beslutsprocesser. Positionen kan närmast beskrivas som en balansakt där chefen i sin vardagsverklighet måste förhålla sig till de olika krav och förväntningar som ställs av politiker, medborgare och medarbetare. I chefskapet ingår även intern och extern informationsöverföring och ett ständigt flöde av horisontella och vertikala interaktioner. I föreliggande studie har en multimetodisk forskningsansats tillämpats i syfte att ringa in 202 kommunala chefers kommunikation genom användandet av olika digitala verktyg. Resultatet visar att de digitala verktyg som cheferna använde i sitt arbete förenklade och effektiviserade kommunikationen inom och utanför organisationen. Ett återkommande dilemma var att cheferna hade svårt att leva upp till normen om hur en chef bör vara. Fysisk närvaro i de verksamheter som man hade ansvar för upplevdes som ouppnåeligt, men tycktes heller inte krävas av medarbetarna. Organisationens digitala arbetsmiljö blev då ett sätt för cheferna att vara tillgängliga och skapa en kollaborativ kommunikation, något som stödjer idén om ett ledarskap, präglat av support.

- This article introduces two different non-parametric wavelet-based panel unit-root tests in the presence of unknown structural breaks and cross-sectional dependencies in the data. These tests are compared with a previously suggested non-parametric wavelet test, the parameteric Im-Pesaran and Shin (IPS) test and a Wald type of test. The results from the Monte Carlo simulations clearly show that the new wavelet-ratio tests are superior to the traditional tests both in terms of size and power in panel unit-root tests because of its robustness to cross-section dependency and structural breaks. Based on an empirical Central American panel application, we can, in contrast to previous research (where bias due to structural breaks is simply disregarded), find strong, clear-cut support for purchasing power parity (PPP) in this developing region.

- Recruitment is one of the Swedish Armed Forces' (SAF) main challenges today. Recruiting more women into the organization is one of the organization's aims, as well as providing them with more opportunities for career development. The purpose of this article is to gain a deeper understanding of how female military officers perceive barriers and advantages on their way to higher leadership positions. A total of 10 women from a variety of backgrounds and positions in the armed forces were interviewed. Their ranks ranged from Captain to Colonel and they represented army, naval units and air force. The interviews were analysed using a Grounded Theory approach. The qualitative analysis resulted in two main themes: Supporting visibility of women as leaders and differentiation of women as leaders. The former concerns positive strategies on an individual and organizational level that support an increase in the number of female leaders in the SAF, and is a way of responding to political incitements and the SAF's fundamental values. The second concerns ways how women are portrayed as different and divergent from the male standard. The suggested model may be valuable in recruitment, educational settings and leader development of high-level military officers from a gender perspective.

Standing alone when life takes an unexpected turn : Being a midlife next of kin of a relative who has suffered a myocardial infarction

- Background: Suffering a myocardial infarction (MI) is a life-threatening event that impacts not only on the individual concerned but also on the next of kin. However, there seems to be a paucity of naturalistic inquiries that focus specifically on midlife next of kin and their experience of being close to a relative who has suffered an MI. This study aims to elucidate the experience of being a midlife next of kin of a relative who has suffered a myocardial infarction. Method: Nine women and four men in midlife participated in the focused interviews, which were conducted and analysed during 2010/2011 using Lindseths and Norbergs' description of the phenomenological hermeneutical method. Findings: Four themes - Solely responsible, Lurking unease, Left out of the picture and Life on hold - formed the basis of the core theme Standing alone when life takes an unexpected turn. The core theme was interpreted as a central phenomenon encompassing the experience of being solely responsible for the well-being of their relative and the family, thus putting their own life on hold. The core theme also reflected the next of kin's experience of being left out of the picture when it came to the relative's care before and after the MI. Conclusion: The next of kin's negative feelings of standing alone were further intensified by their experience of being left out of the picture by the healthcare professionals concerning their relative's care. As a cardiac nurse, it would seem essential to have knowledge about the experiences of next of kin in connection with a relative's MI event. Such knowledge can facilitate the planning and organisation of nursing care and at the same time address the next of kin's role in the recovery and rehabilitation process.

- Syftet med denna studie var att belysa meningsupplevelser för personer yngre än 55 år som överlevt sin första hjärtinfarkt. Vi har analyserat 17 intervjuer med fenomenologisk-hermeneutisk metod. Huvudtemat, och det centrala fenomenet var en daglig kamp för att återvinna balansen i livet, vilket inkluderar en existentiell, fysisk och emotionell kamp för att återfå fotfästet i dagligt liv. Efterspelet till denna livshotande händelse involverade en transition/förändringsprocess samtidigt som en ny livsmening skapades. Informanternas berättelser färgades av en energibrist som påverkade deras liv och interagerade med orimliga krav från arbetsgivare och vårdpersonal. Kunskapen från denna studie kan utgöra ett värdefullt tillskott till kvalitetsarbete inom omvårdnad och till utveckling av omvårdnadsinterventioner för hjärtrehabilitering av yngre personer efter hjärtinfarkt.

Registered nurses’ descriptions of caring : A phenomenographic interview study

- Background: Nursing has come a long way since the days of Florence Nightingale and even though no consensus exists it would seem reasonable to assume that caring still remains the inner core, the essence of nursing. In the light of the societal, contextual and political changes that have taken place during the 21st century, it is important to explore whether these might have influenced the essence of nursing. The aim of this study was to describe registered nurses’ conceptions of caring. Methods: A qualitative design with a phenomenographic approach was used. The interviews with twenty-one nurses took place between March and May 2013 and the transcripts were analysed inspired by Marton and Booth’s description of phenomenography. Results: The analysis mirrored four qualitatively different ways of understanding caring from the nurses’ perspective: caring as person-centredness, caring as safeguarding the patient’s best interests, caring as nursing interventions and caring as contextually intertwined. Conclusion: The most comprehensive feature of the nurses’ collective understanding of caring was their recognition and acknowledgment of the person behind the patient, i.e. person-centredness. However, caring was described as being part of an intricate interplay in the care context, which has impacted on all the described conceptions of caring. Greater emphasis on the care context, i.e. the environment in which caring takes place, are warranted as this could mitigate the possibility that essential care is left unaddressed, thus contributing to better quality of care and safer patient care.
