  • The influence of microcrack density on the elastic and fracture mechanical properties of Stripa granite
  • 1985
  • Ingår i: Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors. - 0031-9201 .- 1872-7395. ; 40:3, s. 161-179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presents results from a great number of mechanical tests on Stripa granite containing various amounts of microcracks. Variations in the microcrack density were obtained by shock-heating the rock at different temperatures in the range 100-600°C for 3 h. The results presented are obtained from sound velocity measurements, uniaxial compression tests, Brazilian tests and three-point bending tests. The density of microcracks in the heated rock is studied by means of optical microscopy, SEM and differential strain analysis

  • The fracture and toughness of woods
  • 1985
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of The Royal Society of London. Series A, Mathematical and physical sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 0080-4630. ; 398:1815, s. 261-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Crack propagation in various woods has been examined by scanning electron microscopy, and the observations related to measurements of fracture toughness. It is found that the toughness is related in a simple way to the density of the wood, which is explained by a straightforward model. The apparent fracture toughness of wood for cracks that lie normal to the grain is larger, by a factor of about 10, than that for cracks which propagate parallel to the grain. This difference can be explained in terms of the fracture mechanics of very anisotropic solids

  • Control theory concepts in production and inventory control
  • 1985
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Systems Science. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0020-7721 .- 1464-5319. ; 16:2, s. 161-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of efficient production and inventory control systems is of great importance for industry. Therefore this area could be expected to provide many fruitful applications of control theory techniques. However, control theory has traditionally been aimed at applications in other fields, and results have only limited applicability in production and inventory control. This paper gives an overview of earlier research concerning control theory applications in production and inventory control. Areas given special emphasis are those in which control theory seems to have a stronger potential for practical application

  • Performance bounds for lot sizing heuristics
  • 1985
  • Ingår i: Management science. - : Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). - 0025-1909 .- 1526-5501. ; 31:5, s. 634-640
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with the classical dynamic lot size problem without backlogging and capacity limitation. The author derives worst case performance bounds for a class of lot sizing heuristics. When the considered methods are applied a decision whether to have a set-up or not in a certain period is taken without regarding the future demands. It is shown that 2 is a lower bound for the worst case performance ratio for such heuristics. The results illustrate circumstances under which the approximate techniques fail

  • The impact of capacity investments on work-in-process and inventories
  • 1985
  • Ingår i: Engineering Costs and Production Economics. - 0167-188X .- 1878-4011. ; 9:1-3, s. 119-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to obtain higher productivity, investments in the production system are needed. Such investments may lead to improvements of two kinds: (i) increased unit production rate and (ii) reduced set-up times. In this paper the impact of capacity investments on capital tied up in work-in-process and inventories is analyzed. Increased production capacity will usually mean that planning parameters, such as lot sizes, have to be changed. For example, if set-up times are reduced an optimal policy will use smaller order quantities. This will then indirectly lead to lower holding costs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare such consequences.

  • Learning and hypothesis testing in probabilistic inference tasks
  • 1985
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. - : Wiley. - 0036-5564 .- 1467-9450. ; 26:4, s. 305-313
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relation between learning of probabilistic inference tasks and the availability of correct hypotheses for the tasks in individual subjects was investigated in two experiments. The results showed that having the correct hypotheses as measured before learning the tasks was neither a sufficient nor a necessary condition for learning the task. It was concluded that the hypothesis measurements are not reliable enough to allow predictions on an individual level. The results also showed that subjects have not only the four basic functions: positive linear, negative linear, U-shaped and inversely U-shaped, in their hypothesis hierarchies but also J-shaped functions. That the subjects can leam such functions is thus no discodinnation of the hypotheses sampling conception of learning as assumed in earlier studies.
