  • Soft computing applications in wind power systems: a review and analysis
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Offshore Wind 2009 Conference proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper reviews, analyses, discusses and summarises the recent research and development and trends in the applications of soft computing in the field of wind power systems. We show the usage and the influence of soft computing on the different aspects of wind power systems especially in the field of operation and maintenance. This work provides the state of the art in this area which will be a good guidance for future research work. The main results achieved from the study show that the soft computing techniques are adequate for solving the different challenges at the different phases of the life cycle processes of wind power systems. Using the various soft computing techniques with wind power systems proved to be useful for the wind energy business. Using these tools contribute by improving the robustness of the decisions at different phases of the system's life cycle. Soft computing can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the operation and maintenance of offshore wind power systems through improving the availability levels. Thus, providing secure, sustainable and competitive energy supply for the future.

  • Sulfur dynamics in boreal acid sulphate soils rich in metastable iron sulfide – The role of artificial drainage
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Chemical Geology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0009-2541 .- 1872-6836. ; 255:1-2, s. 68-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sulfur dynamics of boreal brackish-water sediments rich in metastable iron sulfide (average elemental composition of FeS1.1), which upon oxidation have a huge impact on stream-water chemistry, were studied. Two cores, extending from the upper oxidized layer (acid sulfate soil) into the underlying iron sulfide-bearing sediment (potential acid sulfate soil) were collected at a site close to the sea level and at another site about 40 m above the latter in a region of current isostatic land uplift (Finland). The data clearly show, in contrast to what is often argued, that these notorious acidic soils are formed not as a result of the natural uplift but because of extensive ditching of farmlands. Above the depth of artificial drainage, S and Ni are abundantly lost, while beneath that level pyrite is abundant and metastable iron sulfide is increasing with depth, and the Ni concentration is relatively stable. In the narrow zone between the reduced and oxidized layers, the processes are dynamic and result in preservation of elemental S at one of the locations. The sulfur isotopic composition for metastable iron sulfide and pyrite in the investigated acid sulfate soils were found to be distinctly bimodal and roughly corresponding to a similar distribution in stream-water sulfate earlier reported from the same region. This indicates that pyrite is the main source of sulfate and acidity in some affected drains, while in others it is metastable iron sulfide.

  • Systems Thinking Benefits in Supply Change Management : An illustration of the viable systems model in a supply chain
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Intelligent Systems Technologies and Applications. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1740-8865 .- 1740-8873. ; 6:3/4, s. 227-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Existing product development models are solely an organisational matter. They do not take into consideration the whole Supply chain (SC) and its different actors. In this article, we investigate how Supply Chain Management and Viable System Model (VSM) can support and create an effective use of information in product development and hence identify critical linkages in the SC. The aim is to introduce VSM as a framework that enables an analysis of companies’ SCs and visualise vital inter-organisational relationships that should be integrated in product development.

  • A framework for the modelling of tempo-spatial enterprise
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Applied Systemic Studies. - 1751-0589 .- 1751-0597. ; 1:3, s. 231-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A framework for the modelling of enterprise operations is presented, aiming at enabling a conception of enterprise operations in three explicitly aligned perspectives: its what, or morphology; its when, or temporal position; its where, or spatial position. It is derived from the precepts of a General Systems Theory and its General Process Theory. The practical and empirical benefit of this framework is indicated by a real-life case, a so-called 'Transatlantic Shopping Process', where the models constructed enable management of complexities emerging from enterprise operations.

  • Spare parts estimation and risk assessment conducted at Choghart Iron Ore Mine: A case study
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1355-2511 .- 1758-7832. ; 13:4, s. 353-363
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – Spare parts needs are dependent on the characteristics of the product in question, e.g. its reliability and maintainability, and the characteristics of the environment in which the product is going to be used (e.g. the temperature, humidity, and the user/operator's skills and capabilities), which constitute covariates. The covariates have a significant influence on the system reliability characteristics and consequently on the number of required spare parts. The main objective of this research study is to evaluate the associated risks (i.e. risk of shortage of spare parts) in estimation of the required number of spare parts due to not considering the characteristics of system operating environment. Design/methodology/approach – An event tree is a graphical logic model that identifies and quantifies possible outcomes following an initiating event (non-considering system operating environment in this case) in spare parts planning. In the present research a risk analysis is performed through a new and non-standard event tree analysis. It used an event tree analysis in which the states of organization and managerial decisions took place in risk analysis. Findings – In the present study a modified form of event tree analysis was introduced and implemented. In the new version the undesired states were used instead of barriers in combination with events and consequents changes as a safety function in event tree analysis. The output of the event tree analysis shows that there is a considerable operational risk due to losses (production and economical) associated with the non-consideration of the machine working environment. Practical implications – In the estimation of the accurate amount of support and spare parts needed for any industrial system/machine, it is strongly recommended to take the product operating environment into account. This can be proved by the event tree risk analysis method used in a modified and non-standard form in the present research. The results of risk analysis can help managers in making accurate decisions for product support and spare part needs in the future. Originality/value – Modified event tree analysis is a new approach suggested for visualizing the risk associated with non-considering of system operating environment in required support/spare parts estimation. Visualization of risk in graphics can facilitate correct decision making in spare parts planning.
