  • Dementia, Design and Technology : Time to get involved.
  • 2009
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The interest for the design of life environments for persons with dementia is growing stronger among architects, engineers, social scientists and those responsible for housing and health care planning. This development is connected to the enlarged group of people that become afflicted by this disease and to the fact that a safe environment is proved to be very important for their well-being as well as for their relatives and carers. Dementia is a progressive syndrome and the risk increases by age. Since there is no cure for this disease what we can do is to improve their life situation. It is often called the disease of the relatives because it deeply effects relations and daily life. It is also a disease that the individual has to live with. Most often the meaning of daily routines and the use of common technical applications and services changes dramatically. Efforts are made to design housing for persons with dementia and systems to support their carers. Technologies and a variety of aids is expected to help in developing efficiency of these services, supporting family carers and providing solutions for independent living and improved quality of life of persons with dementia. So far, persons with dementia have not been involved in most of the design processes. Their voice has been used by their informal or formal carers or dementia experts. As a consequence most solutions available are focusing mainly on safety and needs of the carers while other needs and possibilities are mainly neglected. Published result confirms that the lack of user involvement did not facilitate the use of common applications, nor assistive technologies. The aim of this book is to increase the understanding of subjective needs of people with dementia and the way this understanding can promote and improve their involvement in design processes. We will present examples of design and design interventions where people with dementia are involved and what is required from technology when the user has an illness causing dementia. Because of the fact that approaches to involve people with dementia in design as active users of technology are still quite novel, we will also discuss ethical issues and challenging experiences gathered in our studies. The authors represent on-going design and research in Scandinavia and United Kingdom.

  • Epidemiological aspects of tick borne diseases with focus on risk and prevention
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The incidence and variety of diseases associated with ticks have increased world-wide and ticks are currently considered to be second only to mosquitoes as vectors of human infectious diseases in the world. In the northern hemisphere, Ixodes ricinus, the most common tick, transmits diseases caused by several infectious pathogens, including different types of bacteria, virus and protozoa. In Sweden, Lyme borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis and erlichiosis are established, and more than 10.000 people are infected each year. This thesis focuses on aspects of risks associated with tick bites, the risk of contracting tick borne diseases including long-term outcome, and preventive measures and behaviour among people living in tick endemic areas. The first study describes the long-term outcome in patients treated with antibiotics due to neuroborreliosis. At the follow up, 75% of the patients had recovered completely and 25% (95% confidence interval; 17% - 33%) suffered from residual neurological symptoms such as facial palsy, concentration disorder, paresthesia and/or neuropathy. In order to avoid sequelae, early diagnosis and treatment are of great importance. The second study investigated the exposure and contraction of tick-bites with the risk of developing Lyme borreliosis from these tick-bites. Results showed that among people well aware of tick-borne diseases and who inspect their skin daily for ticks, the monthly rate of being tick bitten was 0.04 (95% confidence interval; 0.02-0.06) per 10 hours spent out of doors. Within six months, 3% had contracted Lyme borreliosis, i.e. the risk of developing this disease was 0.5% (95% confidence interval; 0.44-0.56) per tick-bite. The third (experimental) study was aimed at determining whether light-coloured or dark-coloured clothing had the least attractive effect on Ixodes ricinus. The overall found ticks between the both colours differed significantly, with 62% (95% confidence interval; 59% - 65%) of the ticks found on light-coloured clothing. Dark-coloured clothing seems to attract fewer ticks. The fourth study describes tick preventive measures, and their predictors, taken among highly exposed people. In total, 69% of the participants regularly took preventive measures, personally and/or in the environment. When analysing gender and preventive measure solely, women took more preventive measures compared to men. When analysing all risk variables together, spending less time in tick endemic area and being tick bitten the same tick season significantly increased the probability of taking any preventive measures. After being tick bitten, men increased their performance of preventive measures more than women.

  • Users in Action. Stories of Users and Telematics in Everyday Life
  • 1999

    • This thesis deals with the role of technology in elderly peoples everydaylife, to what extent technology can facilitate or prevent them from havinga social life. The intension is to describe the role of technology from olderpeoples own perspective. Four activities in everyday life in which technology is involved are emphasised: social contacts, security, information and distribution of services and goods. Technology related to these activities are telephones, televisions, safety alarms and homeshopping-terminals. The aim of the study is to describe how these fourtechnologies are used by the elderly and what function and meaning theygive to the technology; and to describe old peoples attitudes to newtechnology in general and to the home shopping-terminals specificallyand how this technology affects their everyday life contacts and routins. The main emphirical work consists of recurrent interviews andobservations of a group of old people living in a city (Malmo) and in a rural district (Kinda). The results show that the function of technologies such as the telephoneand the television becomes more specific and even more important to connect the home with the outside world. By this kind of technology the interviewees remain socially integrated but, which is one of their expressed preferences, with no demands on social participation. A growing need of privacy is succesfully combined with an increased need of security and help. Technology is not used to establish new contacts but relations to relatives and friends are maintained. The attitude and acceptance of new technology in general is positive due to their lifelong experiences of improvements. The difference is that they are not that interested anymore, referring to an increased pragmatic vue towards modernity, to a limited future-perspective and to their basic values.
