  • How does accessibility to knowledge sources affect the innovativeness of corporations? : evidence from Sweden
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: The annals of regional science. - 0570-1864. ; 39:4, s. 741-765
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the innovative performance of 130 Swedish corporations during 1993-1994. The number of patents per corporation is explained as a function of the accessibility to internal and external knowledge sources of each corporation. A coherent way of handling accessibility measures, within and between corporations located across regions, is introduced. We examine the relative importance of intra- and interregional knowledge sources from 1) the own corporation, 2) other corporations, and 3) universities. The results show that there is a positive relationship between the innovativeness of a corporation and its accessibility to university researchers within regions where own research groups are located. Good accessibility among the corporation's research units does not have any significant effects on the likelihood of generation of patents. Instead the size of the R&D staff of the corporation seems to be the most important internal factor. There is no indication that intraregional accessibility to other corporations' research is important for a corporation's innovativeness. However, there is some indication of reduced likelihood for own corporate patenting when other corporate R&D is located in nearby regions. This may reflect a negative effect from competition for R&D labor.

  • Socio-technical IS design science research : Developing design theory for IS
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Information Systems and E-Business Management. - Berlin Heidelberg : Springer Verlag. - 1617-9846. ; 9:1, s. 109-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Design science research is an essential part of IS research since the field should not only try to understand how the world is, but also how to change it. We argue that the aim of IS design science research should be to develop practical knowledge not only for the design of novel information technology, but also for IS governance and management. Whereas at least some methodological support exists for researchers engaged in IT-centric design science research, limited support is available for researchers who want to develop design knowledge and theory for IS governance and management. To overcome this shortcoming, we suggest a socio-technical IS design science research approach. The approach has four main activities: 1) identifying problem situations and desired outcomes, 2) reviewing extant theories, knowledge and data, 3) proposing/refining design theory and knowledge, and 4) testing design theory and knowledge. The applicability and usefulness of the proposed approach is shown by means of a design science research project concerning IS integration in the context of mergers and acquisitions.

  • Towards a Design Science Research Approach for IS Use and Management: Applications from the Areas of Knowledge Management, E-Learning and IS Integration
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Design science research is an essential part of IS research since the field should not only try to understand how the world is but also how to change it. We argue that the aim of IS design science research should be to develop practical knowledge not only for the design and improvement of IS but also for IS use and management. Whereas substantial methodological support exists for researchers engaged in behavioral IS research, only limited methodological support exists for researchers with the ambition to develop new IS design theories and new IT artifacts. For the development of design theories for IS use and management the methodological support is even weaker. To overcome this shortcoming we suggest an approach for design research on IS use and management. We give three examples of the proposed approach in use by applying it to the areas of knowledge management systems, e-learning and IS integration.

  • An Approach for Designing Management Support Systems
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of DESRIST 2009 : The 4th International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Technology, Malvern, PA, USA. - New York : ACM. - 978-1-60558-408-9
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Design science research involves creating and evaluating innovative methods and approaches to be used in design practice. We present an approach to be used in the process of designing Management Support Systems (MSS). The nature of managerial work makes the design, development, and implementation of MSS a major challenge. The MSS literature suggests that determining MSS requirements and specification of MSS are the most critical phases in MSS design and development. We present an approach that can be used as a guide for MSS design, with a primary focus on MSS requirements determination and how requirements can be fulfilled using information and communication technologies (ICT). The approach builds on Quinn and associates’ competing values model (CVM) of organizational effectiveness. The approach can guide MSS designers in designing MSS that support different managerial roles, i.e., the development of MSS that support managerial cognition, decision, and action.

  • An examination of research approaches that underlie research on educational technology : A review from 2000 to 2004
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of educational computing research (Print). - 0735-6331. ; 36:2, s. 175-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines the research approaches that underlie research on educational technology. A classification framework was developed and used when examining all articles published in four well-known journals between 200 and 2004 (n = 660). The aim of the study was to contrubute toward an understanding of the research approaches that characterize research on educational technology. It was found that research is increasingly dominated by empirical articles that adopt a pluralistic approach regarding research methosd but also regarding different types of non-empirical research.

  • Computer-mediated communication in education: A summary of recent research
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Educational Media International. ; 44(1), s. 61-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • The field of research on computer-mediated communication (CMC) in education is a relatively new research area. A summary of the latest research is useful to show what methodologies and research topics have been emphasized in order to be better prepared for the future by uncovering areas where there is a lack of research. The study examines articles published in Computers & Education, Educational Media International, Journal of Educational Computing Research and Journal of Educational Media between 2000 and 2004. It reveals that the field is dominated by empirical articles that adopt a pluralistic approach and investigate the use of asynchronous text-based CMC systems by learners and instructors engaged in blended education. The article is concluded by suggesting how these findings may guide future research. (Contains 4 tables and 7 figures.)

  • Design exemplars for synchronous e-learning : A design theory approach
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Computers and education. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0360-1315. ; 55:2, s. 652-662
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract: Synchronous e-learning has received much less research attention, as compared with asynchronous e-learning. Practitioners that consider using and designing synchronous e-learning are in urgent need of guidance. In order to address this need, we propose design exemplars for synchronous e-learning. They are directed towards a primary constituent community of teachers, administrators, managers and developers of e-learning. The exemplars have been theoretically grounded as well as empirically grounded through cross-case analyses of studies conducted between 2003 and 2006. Moreover, the exemplars have been evaluated by conducting focus group sessions with experienced practitioners having experience of using and developing e-learning. Strong support was identified for each design exemplar. The exemplars can be used as research hypotheses and be tested in future design research.

  • Instant messaging use and its effect on student participation in online group work
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of World Conference on Educational Multimedia, Hypermedia and Telecommunications 2005. ; s. 701-706
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • Achieving active participation has been argued as one of the most important challenges in distance education. This research examines whether a new and emerging synchronous communication medium, instant messaging (IM), may enable students to participate more actively in online group work. When comparing groups that adopted the IM system with groups that did not, it was found that the adopters reported a higher sense of participation, and spent more time working with content and communicating with peers. The study indicates that the groups that adopted the IM system may have operated with a higher level of participation than those who did not

  • Introducing an informal synchronous medium in a distance learning course : How is participation affected?
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: The Internet and higher education. - Orlando : Elsevier. - 1096-7516. ; 9:2, s. 117-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Achieving active participation has been argued to be an intrinsic part of learning and has become a central issue in debates on online education. This research examines whether an emerging synchronous communication medium, instant messaging (IM), may enable students in participating more actively in a distance learning course. In doing this, it is first evaluated how the system was used. When comparing two offerings of the course, where the first was delivered asynchronously and the second was complemented with an IM system, results indicated that the first class operated with a higher level of participation. However, when comparing students that adopted the IM system with those that did not it was found that the adopters operated with a higher level of participation. Since the results are tentative, the paper is concluded by calling for further research that tests the results of this study in both similar and different contexts. (Contains 1 table and 6 tables.)
