  • How does accessibility to knowledge sources affect the innovativeness of corporations? - evidence from Sweden
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Annals of Regional Science. - Springer. - 1432-0592. ; 39:4, s. 741-765
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the innovative performance of 130 Swedish corporations during 1993-1994. The number of patents per corporation is explained as a function of the accessibility to internal and external knowledge sources of each corporation. A coherent way of handling accessibility measures, within and between corporations located across regions, is introduced. We examine the relative importance of intra- and interregional knowledge sources from 1) the own corporation, 2) other corporations, and 3) universities. The results show that there is a positive relationship between the innovativeness of a corporation and its accessibility to university researchers within regions where own research groups are located. Good accessibility among the corporation's research units does not have any significant effects on the likelihood of generation of patents. Instead the size of the R&D staff of the corporation seems to be the most important internal factor. There is no indication that intraregional accessibility to other corporations' research is important for a corporation's innovativeness. However, there is some indication of reduced likelihood for own corporate patenting when other corporate R&D is located in nearby regions. This may reflect a negative effect from competition for R&D labor.

  • Technology Specialization and the Magnitude and Quality of Exports
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Economics of Innovation and New Technology. - 1043-8599. ; 17:4, s. 355-375
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines howtechnologyspecialization, measured by citation-weighed patents, affects trade flows. The paper analyzes the relationship between (i)technologyspecializationandexportspecializationacross regions and (ii) thetechnologyspecializationof origin and destination and thequalityofexportflows. We find that theexportspecializationof regions corresponds to theirtechnologyspecialization. Regions with highertechnologyspecializationexportproducts of higherquality, as indicated by higher prices. Moreover, exportflows to destination countries with a hightechnologyspecializationconsist of products of higherqualityin the specifictechnology. The results are consistent with knowledge andtechnologybeing important forexportperformance and with regions with higherspecializationin atechnologybeing better equipped to produce high-qualityproducts. They are also consistent with destinations of highertechnologyspecialization, having a more pronounced demand for products of higherqualityin the sametechnology.

  • Socio-Technical IS Design Science Research: Developing Design Theory for IS Integration Management
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Information Systems and e-Business Management. - Springer Verlag. - 1617-9846. ; 9:1, s. 109-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Design science research is an essential part of IS research since the field should not only try to understand how the world is, but also how to change it. We argue that the aim of IS design science research should be to develop practical knowledge not only for the design of novel information technology (IT), but also for IS governance and management. Whereas at least some methodological support exists for researchers engaged in IT-centric design science research, limited support is available for researchers who want to develop design knowledge and theory for IS governance and management. To overcome this shortcoming, we suggest a sociotechnical IS design science research approach. The approach has four main activities: (1) identifying problem situations and desired outcomes, (2) reviewing extant theories, knowledge and data, (3) proposing/refining design theory and knowledge, and (4) testing design theory and knowledge. The applicability and usefulness of the proposed approach is shown by means of a design science research project concerning IS integration management in the context of mergers and acquisitions.

  • Computer-mediated communication in education: A summary of recent research
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Educational Media International. - Routledge. ; 44(1), s. 61-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • The field of research on computer-mediated communication (CMC) in education is a relatively new research area. A summary of the latest research is useful to show what methodologies and research topics have been emphasized in order to be better prepared for the future by uncovering areas where there is a lack of research. The study examines articles published in Computers & Education, Educational Media International, Journal of Educational Computing Research and Journal of Educational Media between 2000 and 2004. It reveals that the field is dominated by empirical articles that adopt a pluralistic approach and investigate the use of asynchronous text-based CMC systems by learners and instructors engaged in blended education. The article is concluded by suggesting how these findings may guide future research. (Contains 4 tables and 7 figures.)

  • Design exemplars for synchronous e-learning : A design theory approach
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Computers and education. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0360-1315. ; 55:2, s. 652-662
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Synchronous e-learning has received much less research attention, as compared with asynchronous elearning. Practitioners that consider using and designing synchronous e-learning are in urgent need of guidance. In order to address this need, we propose design exemplars for synchronous e-learning. They are directed towards a primary constituent community of teachers, administrators, managers and developers of e-learning. The exemplars have been theoretically as well as empirically grounded through cross-case analyses of studies conducted between 2003 and 2006. Moreover, the exemplars have been evaluated by conducting focus group sessions with experienced practitioners having experience of using and developing e-learning. Strong support was identified for each design exemplar. The exemplars can be used as research hypotheses and be tested in future design research.

  • Internal and external knowledge and introduction of export varieties
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The World Economy. - 0378-5920. ; 38:4, s. 629-654
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Firms in local industries maintain their capability to generate new export varieties by simultaneously exploiting internal and external knowledge resources. The paper introduces the notion ‘variety triplet’ to distinguish individual export varieties, where a triplet is a unique combination of a firm, a product code and a destination country. For each date, the set of variety triplets in each local industry records all remaining export varieties introduced in the past. In view of this, the paper examines how internal and external knowledge of local industries influence the industry's scope and value of export varieties. First, the paper contributes by considering a local industry's internal and external knowledge, as well as the conjunction of its internal and external knowledge sources. Second, the knowledge sources are shown to influence both the stock and the dynamics of a local industry's variety triplets, using firm-level data from Sweden.

  • Persistence of various types of innovation analyzed and explained
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Research Policy. - Elsevier. - 0048-7333. ; 44:10, s. 1887-1901
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes the persistency in innovation behavior of firms. Using five waves of the Community Innovation Survey in Sweden, we have traced the innovative behavior of firms over a ten-year period, i.e., between 2002 and 2012. We distinguish between four types of innovations: process, product, marketing, and organizational innovations. First, using transition probability matrix, we found evidence of (unconditional) state dependence in all types of innovation, with product innovators having the strongest persistent behavior. Second, using a dynamic probit model, we found evidence of "true" state dependency among all types of innovations, except marketing innovators. Once again, the strongest persistency was found for product innovators. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Strategic entrepreneurship and knowledge spillovers: spatial and aspatial perspectives
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal. - Springer. - 1554-7191.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The literature in the Strategic Entrepreneurship (SE) is increasingly embracingthe concept and implications of knowledge spillovers. In this paper, we add to thetheoretical repertoire on SE and knowledge spillovers by investigating the types ofknowledge spillovers and what they imply for various dimensions of SE. On the one hand,we distinguish between spatial and aspatial knowledge spillovers. On the other hand, wedistinguish between three dimensions of SE, i.e. inputs, resource orchestration, and output. Finally, we conceptually link the various types of knowledge spillovers and dimensions ofSE and discuss the implications. Doing so, we argue that spatial knowledge spillovers(inter-firm) has received the major attention in previous research in increasing the amountof ‘inputs’ dimension of SE, while the aspatial knowledge (either inter-regional or intrafirm)has been relatively neglected not only for ‘inputs’, but also for ‘resource
