  • Harness mobility : Managing the off-task property
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: DESRIST 2010: The 5th International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology 2010, in St Gallen, Switzerland. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer. ; 6105, s. 258-269, s. 258-269
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Technological advancements in mobile computing and wireless networks open up to new applications and new user-groups in the mobile workforce. However, a considerable part of the mobile workforce, such as e.g. drivers or healthcare staff, is chiefly performing other tasks than interacting with their computers. As a result, they are not able to pay attention to computer interaction, making them mainly off computer tasks. The aim of the paper is to develop a design theory to manage off-task situations in mobile computing. Interviews were performed with developers of an information system comprising mobile devices for drivers. From the interviews, a design of an artifact and a design theory based on a strategy to automate routine administration task using place awareness is presented. The eight components of IS design theory by Gregor and Jones is applied as a theoretical framework.

  • Life Stories and Christian Zionist Ideology : A Theoretical Outline of How to Capture the Interplay between Individual and Ideology

    • Christian Zionism is usually characterized as a theological and political movement grounded in literalist bible hermeneutics and End-time speculations that dedicate unwavering support to the State of Israel and the Jewish people. The prophetic element in Christian Zionism has in later years been downplayed for a more down-to-earth focus on social and political commitment to the well-being of the state of Israel. This shift in emphasis leaves the floor open to new investigations into the identification with Israel that is central to many western evangelicals’ understanding of their Christian faith. In my research I use narrative methods to investigate contemporary Christian volunteer workers in Israel. I want to investigate how individual life-stories relate to the grand narrative of Christian Zionism in order to answer the question of the symbolical value that Israel bears to these believers. In the present paper I discuss theoretical and methodological questions in relation to my research project. As the interplay between individual biographies and ideology is the particular focus of my research I use James A. Holstein and Jaber F. Gubrium’s theoretical approach combined with ethnographic methods.

  • A realist conceptualization for studying information system development methodology
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Information Management and Evaluation (ICIME 2010).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is tempting to assume that Information Systems Development Methodology (ISDM) is clearly understood because it has attracted researchers across a range of research fields offering a rich set of descriptions and explanations of ISDM. Although there are considerable studies on ISDM, this paper argues that different disciplinary interests have resulted in fragmented assessments. Consequently, this paper seeks to bridge the gap between different research streams which reflect different theoretical approaches in assessing ISDM. The overall purpose of the paper is to provide an alternative conceptualisation of ISDM i.e. from an IS design science perspective, which is theoretically grounded in realist social theory. Based on the alternative conceptualisation of ISDM, that retains the valuable insights of prior works, a tentative design proposition is developed. The design proposition consists of a combination of interventions and provides high-level guidance for designing initiatives of a particular IS class, i.e., ISDM initiative, by emphasizing what to do and why in order to achieve particular outcomes. Hence, the paper addresses the following research question: How to conceptualise an ISDM initiative? The research methodology applied involves an explorative field study research strategy based on a literature review and qualitative analysis procedure. In this paper four theoretical perspectives on ISDM are identified. While each perspective regarded in isolation provides different overarching depictions of ISDM, together they reveal the complexities and ambiguities of this multifaceted phenomenon. The study provides an alternative ISDM conceptualisation and a tentative design proposition for designing ISDM initiatives. From a theoretical point of view, the implicit claim is that the suggested conceptualization of ISDM will facilitate conceptual bridges between different research streams and aid scholars and practitioners to understand the complexity of ISDM. From a practitioner perspective, the tentative design proposition developed in the paper provides guidance more accurately in assessing and designing ISDM initiatives. The alternative IS design science research approach to studying ISDM with a realist conceptualization is, in our opinion, an appropriate way to start and lays the groundwork for useful follow-on research.
