  • Modeling of exhaust gas cleaning by acid pollutant conversion to aerosol particles
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Fuel. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-2361 .- 1873-7153. ; 290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sulfur and nitrogen oxides (SOx and NOx) are harmful pollutants emitted into the atmosphere by industry and transport sectors. In addition to being hazardous gases, SOx and NOx form sulfuric and nitric acids which contribute to the formation of airborne particulate matter through nucleation and condensation, hence magnifying the environmental impact of these species. In this work, we build a modeling framework for utilizing this phenomenon for low-temperature exhaust gas cleaning. It has been reported that ammonia gas can be used to facilitate particle formation from the aforementioned acids, and thus remove these gaseous pollutants by converting them into ammonium sulfate and nitrate particles. Here we provide comprehensive modeling tools for applying this idea to exhaust gas cleaning by combining detailed models for nucleation, gas-particle mass exchange and particle population dynamics. We demonstrate how these models can be used to find advantageous operating conditions for a cleaning unit. In particular, the full model is computationally cheap and enables optimization of the particle formation efficiency and particle growth, hence ensuring sufficient conversion of gaseous pollutants into collectable particulate matter. This constitutes a ground for future engineering tools for designing next-generation sustainable exhaust gas cleaners.

  • Developing Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment methodology by applying values-based sustainability weighting - Tested on biomass based and fossil transportation fuels
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 181, s. 337-351
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production and use of transportation fuels can lead to sustainability impacts. Assessing them simultaneously in a holistic way is a challenge. This paper examines methodology for assessing the sustainability performance of products in a more integrated way, including a broad range of social impacts. Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) methodology is applied for this assessment. LSCA often constitutes of the integration of results from social LCA (S-LCA), environmental life cycle assessment (E-LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC). In this study, an S-LCA from an earlier project is extended with a positive social aspect, as well as refined and detailed. E-LCA and LCC results are built from LCA database and literature. Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methodology is applied to integrate the results from the three different assessments into an LCSA. The weighting of key sustainability dimensions in the MCDA is performed in different ways, where the sustainability dimensions are prioritized differently priority based on the assumed values of different stakeholder profiles (Egalitarian, Hierarchist, and Individualist). The developed methodology is tested on selected biomass based and fossil transportation fuels - ethanol produced from Brazilian sugarcane and US corn/maize, and petrol produced from Russian and Nigerian crude oils, where it delineates differences in sustainability performance between products assessed. The outcome in terms of relative ranking of the transportation fuel chains based on sustain ability performance differs when applying different decision-maker profiles. This result highlights and supports views that there is no one single answer regarding which of the alternatives that is most sustainable. Rather, it depends strongly upon the worldview and values held by the decision maker. A key conclusion is that sustainability assessments should pay more attention to potential differences in underlying values held by key stakeholders in relevant societal contexts. The LCSA methodology still faces challenges regarding results integration but MCDA in combination with stakeholder profiles appears to be a useful approach to build on further.

  • Fluorescence lidar imaging of fungal growth on high-voltage outdoor composite insulators
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Optics and Lasers in Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0143-8166 .- 1873-0302. ; 43:6, s. 624-632
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Remote fluorescence imaging of fungal growth on polymeric high-voltage insulators was performed using a mobile lidar system with a laser wavelength of 355 nm. Insulator areas contaminated by fungal growth could be distinguished from clean surfaces and readily be imaged. The experiments were supported by detailed spectral studies performed in laboratory using a fibre-optic fluorosensor incorporating an optical multi-channel analyser system (OMA) and a nitrogen laser emitting radiation at 33 7 nm.

  • Image analysis and laser induced fluorescence combined to determine biological growth on silicone rubber insulators
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Polymer Degradation and Stability. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-2321 .- 0141-3910. ; 88:3, s. 394-400
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-voltage outdoor insulators made from silicone rubber are sometimes reported to be colonised by microorganisms. When the hydrophobic polymeric surface is covered by a hydrophilic biofilm, the electrical properties of the insulator are altered. In this work, mixed biofilms, similar to those formed on the surfaces of polymeric insulators in the field, were successfully grown on five types of silicone rubber substrates in the laboratory, using specially designed microenvironment chambers. Photography and digital image analysis were utilized to estimate the areas covered by the growth. It was found that direct UV-light exposure hindered growth of the biofilms. Further, growth was also hindered on samples where zinc borate had been added as flame retardant. In contrast, addition of ATH did not influence the growth. In parallel, LIF spectroscopy was explored as a tool for detection of biofilms on silicon rubber samples. Experiments revealed that even weak traces of growth, not visible to the naked eye, could be detected. Finally, it is believed that LIF spectroscopy in combination with image analysis can be used for field diagnostics of biological growth on insulators in service.

  • Early stages of spinodal decomposition in Fe-Cr resolved by in-situ small-angle neutron scattering
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 106:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In-situ, time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) investigations of the early stages of the spinodal decomposition process in Fe-35Cr were performed at 773 and 798K. The kinetics of the decomposition, both in terms of characteristic distance and peak intensity, followed a power-law behaviour from the start of the heat treatment (a' = 0.10-0.11 and a '' = 0.67-0.86). Furthermore, the method allows tracking of the high-Q slope, which is a sensitive measure of the early stages of decomposition. Ex-situ SANS and atom probe tomography were used to verify the results from the in-situ investigations. Finally, the in-situ measurement of the evolution of the characteristic distance at 773K was compared with the predictions from the Cahn-Hilliard-Cook model, which showed good agreement with the experimental data (a' = 0.12-0.20 depending on the assumed mobility).

  • Monitoring Nanostructure Dynamics and Polymerization in Glycerol Plasticized Wheat Gliadin and Glutenin Films : Relation to Mechanical Properties
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2168-0485. ; 4:6, s. 2998-3007
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gliadin and glutenin proteins with 10, 20, 30 and 40% of glycerol were compression molded into films (130 °C) and evaluated for protein polymerization, β-sheet structure and nano-structural morphology. Here, for the first time we show how different amounts of glycerol impact the nano-structure and functional properties of the gliadin and glutenin films. Most polymerized protein was found in the gliadin films with 20 and 30% glycerol, and in all the glutenin films (except 10%), by RP-HPLC. A β-sheet-rich protein structure was found to be high in the 10 and 20% glycerol gliadin films, and in the 20 and 30% glycerol glutenin films by FT-IR. Glycerol content of 20, 30 and 40% impacted the nano-structural morphology of the gliadin glycerol films observed by SAXS, and to a limited extent for 10 and 20% glycerol gliadin films revealed by WAXS. No ordered nano-structure was found for the glutenin glycerol films. The 20%, 30% and 40% glycerol films were the most tunable for specific mechanical properties. For the highest stiffness and strength, the 10% glycerol protein films were the best choice.

  • On the Physical Limitations of the Interaction of a Spherical Aperture and a Random Field
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. - : IEEE. - 0018-926X .- 1558-2221. ; 59:1, s. 119-128
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper derives physical limitations on the interactions of antennas exciting TM or TE modes (but not both) and wireless propagation channels. The derivation is based on the spherical vector wave expansion of the electromagnetic field outside a sphere circumscribing the antennas. The result is an extension of the seminal work of Chu on the classical limitations on maximum antenna gain and radiation Q. Rather than maximizing antenna gain in a single direction we obtain physical limitations on the antenna gain pattern, which is directly translated to more condensed parameters, i.e., the instantaneous effective gain G(i) and the mean effective gain G(e) if instantaneous realizations or correlation statistics of the expansion coefficients of the electromagnetic field are known, spectively. The obtained limitations are on the maximum of G(i)/Q and G(e)/Q, which establish a trade-off between link gain and Q.

  • Development of a novel hybrid multi-boosting neural network model for spatial prediction of urban flood
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Geocarto International. - : Taylor and Francis Ltd.. - 1010-6049 .- 1752-0762.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, a new hybridized machine learning algorithm for urban flood susceptibility mapping, named MultiB-MLPNN, was developed using a multi-boosting technique and MLPNN. The model was tested in Amol City, Iran, a data-scarce city in an ungauged area which is prone to severe flood inundation events and currently lacks flood prevention infrastructure. Performance of the hybridized model was compared with that of a standalone MLPNN model, random forest and boosted regression trees. Area under the curve, efficiency, true skill statistic, Matthews correlation coefficient, misclassification rate, sensitivity and specificity were used to evaluate model performance. In validation, the MultiB-MLPNN model showed the best predictive performance. The hybridized MultiB-MLPNN model is thus useful for generating realistic flood susceptibility maps for data-scarce urban areas. The maps can be used to develop risk-reduction measures to protect urban areas from devastating floods, particularly where available data are insufficient to support physically based hydrological or hydraulic models.

  • Dispersion of microfine cement grout with ultrasound and conventional laboratory dissolvers
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Construction and Building Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0950-0618 .- 1879-0526. ; 251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Grout based on microfine cement is mainly used for sealing of rock fractures in underground construction with high sealing requirements. This grout is known as hard dispersed, compared to grouts based on ordinary Portland cement. This study investigates the possibility of using ultrasound to improve the dispersion of microfine cement grout. Ultrasound dispersion is compared with dispersion efficiency of an ordinary laboratory mixer equipped with a disk, and using the rotor-stator technique. Dispersion efficiency was measured with a filter pump. The grout dispersed with the laboratory mixer and disk could not pass through a 154 mm filter. The laboratory mixer using the rotor-stator technique showed much better efficiency, with a measured dispersion that varied between 77 and 104 mm. Dispersion with ultrasound yielded more reliable results, with lower variation; the grout passed through a 77 mm filter. These results showed that a laboratory mixer with a disk is not an effective method for dispersion of microfine cement. A laboratory mixer using the rotor-stator method is much more effective. Ultrasound is not only an effective method but is even better than a mixer using the rotor-stator technique.

  • Real life testing of a hybrid PEM fuel cell bus
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Power Sources. - 0378-7753 .- 1873-2755. ; 118:1-2, s. 349-357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fuel cells produce low quantities of local emissions, if any, and are therefore one of the most promising alternatives to internal combustion engines as the main power source in future vehicles. It is likely that urban buses will be among the first commercial applications for fuel cells in vehicles. This is due to the fact that urban buses are highly visible for the public, they contribute significantly to air pollution in urban areas, they have small limitations in weight and volume and fuelling is handled via a centralised infrastructure. Results and experiences from real life measurements of energy flows in a Scania Hybrid PEM Fuel Cell Concept Bus are presented in this paper. The tests consist of measurements during several standard duty cycles. The efficiency of the fuel cell system and of the complete vehicle are presented and discussed. The net efficiency of the fuel cell system was approximately 40% and the fuel consumption of the concept bus is between 42 and 48% lower compared to a standard Scania bus. Energy recovery by regenerative braking saves up 28% energy. Bus subsystems such as the pneumatic system for door opening, suspension and brakes, the hydraulic power steering, the 24 V grid, the water pump and the cooling fans consume approximately 7% of the energy in the fuel input or 17% of the net power output from the fuel cell system. The bus was built by a number of companies in a project partly financed by the European Commission's Joule programme. The comprehensive testing is partly financed by the Swedish programme "Den Grona Bilen" (The Green Car). A 50 kW(el) fuel cell system is the power source and a high voltage battery pack works as an energy buffer and power booster. The fuel, compressed hydrogen, is stored in two high-pressure stainless steel vessels mounted on the roof of the bus. The bus has a series hybrid electric driveline with wheel hub motors with a maximum power of 100 kW. Hybrid Fuel Cell Buses have a big potential, but there are still many issues to consider prior to full-scale commercialisation of the technology. These are related to durability, lifetime, costs, vehicle and system optimisation and subsystem design. A very important factor is to implement an automotive design policy in the design and construction of all components, both in the propulsion system as well as in the subsystems.
