Introducing the CTA concept

- The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. In this paper we introduce the science goals and the concept of CTA, and provide an overview of the project. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

- Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5-10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV-10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology. This document reports on the status and presents the major design concepts of CTA.

- Technological advancements in mobile computing and wireless networks open up to new applications and new user-groups in the mobile workforce. However, a considerable part of the mobile workforce, such as e.g. drivers or healthcare staff, is chiefly performing other tasks than interacting with their computers. As a result, they are not able to pay attention to computer interaction, making them mainly off computer tasks. The aim of the paper is to develop a design theory to manage off-task situations in mobile computing. Interviews were performed with developers of an information system comprising mobile devices for drivers. From the interviews, a design of an artifact and a design theory based on a strategy to automate routine administration task using place awareness is presented. The eight components of IS design theory by Gregor and Jones is applied as a theoretical framework.

- We exploit exogenous variation arising from the historical rollout of the Swedish railroad network across municipalities to identify the impacts of improved transport infrastructure on innovative activity. A network connection led to a local surge in patenting due to an increased entry and productivity of inventors. As the railroad network expanded, inventors in connected areas began to develop ideas with applications outside the local economy, which were subsequently sold to firms along the network. Our findings suggest that reductions in communication and transportation costs were an important driver of the historical emergence of a market for ideas.

Ethics education to support ethical competence learning in healthcare : an integrative systematic review

- Background: Ethical problems in everyday healthcare work emerge for many reasons and constitute threats to ethi- cal values. If these threats are not managed appropriately, there is a risk that the patient may be inflicted with moral harm or injury, while healthcare professionals are at risk of feeling moral distress. Therefore, it is essential to support the learning and development of ethical competencies among healthcare professionals and students. The aim of this study was to explore the available literature regarding ethics education that promotes ethical competence learning for healthcare professionals and students undergoing training in healthcare professions.Methods: In this integrative systematic review, literature was searched within the PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycInfo databases using the search terms ‘health personnel’, ‘students’, ‘ethics’, ‘moral’, ‘simulation’, and ‘teaching’. In total, 40 arti- cles were selected for review. These articles included professionals from various healthcare professions and students who trained in these professions as subjects. The articles described participation in various forms of ethics education. Data were extracted and synthesised using thematic analysis.Results: The review identified the need for support to make ethical competence learning possible, which in the long run was considered to promote the ability to manage ethical problems. Ethical competence learning was found to be helpful to healthcare professionals and students in drawing attention to ethical problems that they were not previ- ously aware of. Dealing with ethical problems is primarily about reasoning about what is right and in the patient’s best interests, along with making decisions about what needs to be done in a specific situation.Conclusions: The review identified different designs and course content for ethics education to support ethical competence learning. The findings could be used to develop healthcare professionals’ and students’ readiness and capabilities to recognise as well as to respond appropriately to ethically problematic work situations.

- De arkeologiska utgrävningarna är den historiska forskningsinstitution som är starkast reglerat i lag, tilloch med fastare än historieämnets plats i skolundervisningen. Om en exploatör vill utnyttja mark där fornminne finns är det ett ovillkorat krav att platsen ska grävas ut och resultaten dokumenteras.I tider avexpansion för bebyggelse och infrastruktur utvecklas därför institutionerna kring de arkeologiskautgrävningarna.Riksantikvarieämbetet, Avdelningen för arkeologiska undersökningar, UV Öst, har tillsammans medÖstergötlands länsmuseum bedrivit ett uppdragsarkeologiskt projekt kallat Slättbygdsprojektet under åren2000-2005. Som en del av projektet ingår uppdraget att förmedla resultaten av undersökningarna tillallmänheten i olika former. En av ambitionerna är att i Agenda kulturarvs anda bedriva förmedling somfaller under begreppen demokratisering, delaktighet, tillgänglighet och dialog.Det är dennakunskapsförmedlings ramar, förutsättningar, historik, utförande och innehåll som kontextualiseras ochstuderas i den föreliggande rapporten.UV etablerades i Linköping under sent 60-tal och arbetade med stadens utbyggnad samt E4:ansdragning genom länet. Nya grävmetoder gjorde att fynd och samhällsprocesser (boplatser) under markytan upptäcktes. Detta förändrade både kunskapsbild och grävpraktik. Under slutet av 80-taletintensifieras verksamheten och ett eget lokalkontor för UV etablerades. Samtidigt har man menat attutrymmet för bearbetning, analys och synteser har varit för litet. Man kan ändå konstatera att antaletskrifter och andra informationsinsatser varit omfattande. Trots de ur vetenskaplig synvinkel, godtyckligaincitamenten till grävningar som exploateringarna utgör, har man sökt ge en sammanfattande bild avforskningsläget och prioritera de mest intressanta vetenskapliga problemen som en vetenskaplig ram för dokumentationen.Till det kommer en höjd ambitionsnivå för de publika insatserna, förmedlingen.Ambitionsnivån kring dokumentationerna har alltså under 1990-talet ökat både åt det publika och detvetenskapliga hållet.På 2000-talet är det dels utgrävningarna i Norrköping, dels längs järnvägssträckningen Mjölby-Motalasom står för de stora insatserna. Västra Östergötland är en av de mer fyndrika regionerna i länet ochSlättbygdsprojektet presenterar uppläggningen för detta. I jämförelse med den Vetenskapligaverksamhetsplanen från 2000 trycker man än mer på förmedlingen av kunskapen längs en lång rad olikainsatser.

Widespread variation in salt tolerance within freshwater zooplankton species reduces the predictability of community-level salt tolerance

- The salinization of freshwaters is a global threat to aquatic biodiversity. We quantified variation in chloride (Cl-) tolerance of 19 freshwater zooplankton species in four countries to answer three questions: (1) How much variation in Cl- tolerance is present among populations? (2) What factors predict intraspecific variation in Cl- tolerance? (3) Must we account for intraspecific variation to accurately predict community Cl- tolerance? We conducted field mesocosm experiments at 16 sites and compiled acute LC(50)s from published laboratory studies. We found high variation in LC(50)s for Cl- tolerance in multiple species, which, in the experiment, was only explained by zooplankton community composition. Variation in species-LC50 was high enough that at 45% of lakes, community response was not predictable based on species tolerances measured at other sites. This suggests that water quality guidelines should be based on multiple populations and communities to account for large intraspecific variation in Cl- tolerance.
