  • Christianity and Cormac McCarthy's The Road
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: English Studies. - 1744-4217 .- 0013-838X. ; 96:3, s. 293-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cormac McCarthy's The Road takes place not before or during but after the end. The novel follows a man and his son as they seek to survive in what remains of the world after some unspecified cataclysmic event. There is almost nothing left: no society, no food, no animals, no hope. Many readers will feel that the question the novel poses is why anyone would wish to continue living under such circumstances. But although that question might be more urgent post-apocalypse, it is in fact one that can always be asked: what, if anything, makes human life valuable and worthwhile? The novel provides answers to these questions, but these answers are contradictory. The reader is left with a choice between powerful arguments for both faith and despair. In The Road, hope is associated with Christianity and hopelessness with an atheistic understanding of the world. Nonetheless, the novel makes it clear that faith is no easy option. This article will begin by discussing the importance of Christian imagery in the novel, focusing on the key symbolic dimensions of fire and darkness, before going on to show how both Christian and atheistic readings are not only made possible, but actively put forward by the text. It will be argued that the novel presents a powerful challenge to both Christian and atheistic views of the world, without ever actually rejecting either.

  • The Rationality of the Benevolent Ones : A Swedish case of far right-wing objectivity ideal and media criticism around the Second World War
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Media History. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1368-8804 .- 1469-9729. ; 23:1, s. 100-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By examinating the National Society Sweden-Germany (Riksföreningen Sverige-Tyskland) 1938–1958, this article highlights a key aspect of far right-wing opinion building, namely its media criticism and objectivity ideal. Far right-wing opinion building is too often depicted as easily comprehensible and appealing to strong emotions. If its objectivity-oriented and neutrality-footed media criticism with scholarly and non-political overtones is taken into consideration a more nunaced understanding can be reached. The article relates this criticism to the Swedish Government’s information policy, to notions of the historic role of the press as a propaganda channel, to ideals in contemporary journalism, and to a tradition of conservative media criticism. By uncovering the rationality that supported them, the purpose is ultimately to understand the attraction these standpoints could exercise. Since these ways to argue hardly died with the war a deeper historical understanding appears the more imperative.

  • Constructing a Distinct Other: Harry Potter and the Enchantment of the Future
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Anpere: Anthropological Perspectives on Religion. - : anpere.net. - 1653-6355.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article I argue that the Harry Potter series could function as a critique or commentary to the ordinary contemporary society. Rowling’s construction of the Wizard world bears resemblance to a distinct Other, which is frequently used by the tourist industry and various religious traditions. While the main purpose for the tourist industry to invoke a distinct Other lies in its promoting abilities, the religious traditions often use the distinct Other to show their ethic supremacy. The last, I believe, is the case with the Harry Potter series as well since the books promote a meritocratic, causal orientation towards the world. When arguing for a meritocratic and causal orientation towards the world, Rowling disenchants the past and enchants the future. She lets the main characters in the series conduct a crusade against participation oriented attitudes and characters. Contrary to what certain Christian groups seem to think this is by no means hostile towards religion as we find it in Northern Europe and North America. Only traditions with a participatory orientation are under attack.

  • Kristusgestalter och antikristusgestalter i populärkulturen
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Svensk teologisk kvartalskrift. ; 1, s. 42-46:85, s. 42-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This article focuses on the use of the Western messianic mythéme, which has increased during the last decades. In popular culture, Christ figures and Antichrist figures are frequently engaged in dire battles which can only end in the Christ figure's destruction of his opponent. Although this can be seen as a sacralization of popular culture, one should be careful not to confuse the use of religious metaphors with religion per se. While best selling productions like The Matrix,The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter use the Messiah metaphor to expose a cause worth dying for, the differ from other popular productions like Left Behind, Luther: the Movie and The Da Vinci Code which are parts of a religious quest. Although laden with religious or secular ethics, consumers usually consider productions like these as mere entertainment. In the case of Harry Potter, however, various Christian groups have either considered Rowling as promoting Christianity or propagating the occult. In such cases, religion or anti-religion is constructed from non religious fiction.

  • Gender Equality and Beyond : At the Crossroads of Neoliberalism, Anti-Gender Movements, "European" Values, and Normative Reiterations in the Nordic Model
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Social Inclusion. - : Cogitatio. - 2183-2803. ; 6:4, s. 1-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The social-democratic-inspired "Nordic model", with its agenda for gender equality, has been an important example for the development of political interventions to transform society but at the same time, it has functioned as an emerging gender normalising and stabilising structure. In the last decade it has also become the focus of antigender movements and ethno-nationalistic parties both as emblematic for the Nordic nations as well as a threat that must be destroyed to save the nation. This issue will elaborate further on gender equality as a node, a floating signifier in powerful and often contradictory discourses. We are inspired by scholarships of hope in a dialogue with articles that search for realistic utopias that might be considered to be "beyond gender equality". The included articles engage with the messiness and crossroads of gender equality in relation to the work-line, territories, neo-liberalism, religion, the crisis of solidarity and the success of anti-genderism agenda.

  • Memory tourism in a contested landscape : exploring identity discourses in Lviv, Ukraine
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Current Issues in Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1368-3500 .- 1747-7603. ; 21:15, s. 1690-1709
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study explores divergent representations and cultural identity in a historically contested landscape. The first form of representations includes politically amended place marketing. It is analysed how public discourse on a city’s development and regeneration articulate inscriptions of local authorities to pursue political-economic agendas. The second form of representations is diaspora’s imaginary of a pedigree place that derives from genealogical research and travel. In this way, genealogy enables counter-memories to uncritical marketing and ‘alternative’ voices in recast of local history. A contested landscape is conceptualized in the framework of politics of past to reflect stakeholders’ present-day preoccupations. Two forms of representations conceptualize spaces of dominance and resistance in Lefèbvre’s (1991) production of space. The empiric study is conducted in Lviv, a city with complicated past and national identity due to interchangeable powers. The fieldwork comprises the ongoing marketing campaign in Lviv launched in connection to Euro-2012, and the Polish, Jewish, and West Ukrainian diasporic representations. The findings show how the national and the Eurocentric meta-narratives embed the identity discourses of the official élite, and how diasporic texts suggest a genre of resistance to the marketing scripts.

  • What a Waste – A norm-critical design study on how waste is understood and managed
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Resources, Conservation & Recycling Advances. - : Elsevier BV. - 2667-3789. ; 19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article seeks to contribute new insights into inclusive recycling environments through universal design. The aim is to develop knowledge on how waste is understood and managed by exploring the practice and design of a recycling environment. Applying a norm-critical view, this is explored in a study with participants from a municipal housing company and waste management company in northern Sweden. Methods used are go-along interviews together with professionals and observations of a recycling environment. The results are discussed as: 1) the “(un)social norm;” where our results show that the waste system is perceived as a social system, contradicting previous approaches where waste systems are treated as technical environments. 2) the “(un)design factor;” where we identify how design in a recycling context that doesn´t emphasise diversity may affect activities of sorting.

  • Innovation trends and industrial renewal in Finland and Sweden 1970-2013
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Economic History Review. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1750-2837 .- 0358-5522.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examine trends in innovation output for two highly ranked innovative countries: Finland and Sweden (1970-2013). Our novel dataset, collected using the LBIO (literature-based innovation output) method, suggests that the innovation trends are positive for both countries, despite an extended downturn in the 1980s. The findings cast some doubt on the proposition that the current stagnation of many developed countries is due to a lack of innovation and investment opportunities. Our data show that Finland catches up to, and passes, Sweden in innovation output in the 1990s. In per capita terms, Finland stays ahead throughout the period. We find that the strong Finnish performance is largely driven by innovation increase in just a handfull of sectors, but is not restricted to few companies. Both countries saw a rise in innovation during the dot-com era and the structural changes that followed. Since 2000 however, Sweden has outperformed Finland in terms of total innovations, especially in machinery and ICT, while the Finnish rate of innovation has stabilized. We suggest that these patterns may be explained by different paths of industrial renewal.

  • Rethinking archives as digital : The consequences of ‘paper minds’ in illustrations and definitions of ‘e-archives’
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Archivaria. - : Association of Canadian Archivists. - 1923-6409. ; 83:Spring, s. 81-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Culture and discourses affect our understanding of the archive in the digital environment: preconceptions, norms and practices developed in a paper-based administration color and limit perceptions of digital archives. It can be difficult to re-imagine the archive in the context of e-Government, and the networked environment, which increases the complexity of archival issues. This is a global problem, because digital records require other measures than paper records. This takes a foundational approach, focusing on openings and closures of concepts surrounding the idea of archives. Critical theory is used as a lens to study illustrations and descriptions of what an ‘e-archive’ is, and how it should be managed. The analysis is made after three basic principles that the public administration should work towards: (i) a holistic concept of the archive, (ii) a proactive approach to records management, and (iii) striving to integrate the archiving process with the goals and opportunities of e-government. The result indicates that the lack of ‘closings’: commonly understood principles and a shared definition of an e-archive, may restrict the understanding of archives in digital contexts and constrain the development of their full potential. At the same time, the lack of ‘openings’ toward new ways of thinking about and designing e-archives may narrow the scope of possibilities that the digital formats can offer. ‘Paper minds’ may presuppose a ‘stepwise progression’ of records from ‘active’ to ‘archival’ that is unnecessary in the digital context.
