  • Trip Reports: Exploring the Experience of Psychedelic Intoxication
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Intoxicants and Intoxication. - London : Routledge. - 9780429058141 - 9780367178703 ; , s. 241-328
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experiences of intoxication elude scientific research because of their immediate and ‘inner’ nature for the intoxicated individual. In this chapter, we show how ‘trip reports’ – reports of psychedelic intoxication – from online drug information forums and libraries allow for further understanding the experience of psychedelic intoxication from LSD, DMT and psilocybin by examining psychonauts’ (i.e., recreational psychedelic users) own understandings. Methods: The chapter draws on textual ethnography to analyze the trip rapports, approaching the reports as ‘native’ texts that allow for understanding constructions, conventions and practices of intoxication among participants in online psychonaut culture. We reviewed approximately 100 reports from three online drug information forums and libraries: Bluelight, Erowid and Shroomery. By focusing on nine of these reports, we demonstrate how they can be used to analyze psychedelic intoxication. Results: Our analysis shows how psychonauts construct their experiences by combining the context of psychedelic intoxication with inner aspects. The context refers to psychosocial factors of the psychonaut, such as expectations, and their material and social surroundings, such as interior design and other people present during intoxication. The inner experience refers to the arguably psychologically internal reactions and experiences of intoxicating effects, and how the psychonauts narrate them. Conclusions: Our findings show that intoxication follows observable patterns which may best be unraveled by approaching it as structured experience. Yet, the structure of these experiences is not necessarily framed in mystic or religious ways, suggesting that trip reports may complement current research on psychedelic intoxication that approaches it as religious or mystic experiences. Moreover, we suggest that further research should examine the systematics of context and inner experience of psychedelic intoxication which might aide the development of better methods for harm reduction and the study of the therapeutic potential of psychedelics.

  • Causes of Regional Change : Land Cover
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Second Assessment of Climate Change for the Baltic Sea Basin. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319160054 - 9783319160061 ; , s. 453-477
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anthropogenic land-cover change (ALCC) is one of the few climate forcings for which the net direction of the climate response over the last two centuries is still not known. The uncertainty is due to the often counteracting temperature responses to the many biogeophysical effects and to the biogeochemical versus biogeophysical effects. Palaeoecological studies show that the major transformation of the landscape by anthropogenic activities in the southern zone of the Baltic Sea basin occurred between 6000 and 3000/2500 cal year BP. The only modelling study of the biogeophysical effects of past ALCCs on regional climate in north-western Europe suggests that deforestation between 6000 and 200 cal year BP may have caused significant change in winter and summer temperature. There is no indication that deforestation in the Baltic Sea area since AD 1850 would have been a major cause of the recent climate warming in the region through a positive biogeochemical feedback. Several model studies suggest that boreal reforestation might not be an effective climate warming mitigation tool as it might lead to increased warming through biogeophysical processes.

  • Land and Freshwater Complex Interactions in Boreal Forests: A Neglected Topic in Forest Management
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Boreal Forests in the Face of Climate Change. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783031159879 - 9783031159886 - 9783031159909 ; 74, s. 719-745
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aquatic and terrestrial habitats are interdependent components of the boreal forest landscape involving multiple dynamic interactions; these are manifested particularly in riparian areas, which are key components in the forest landscape. However, this interdependence between aquatic and terrestrial habitats is not adequately accounted for in the current management of forest ecosystems. Here we review the impacts of land disturbances on the optical and physicochemical properties of water bodies, aquatic food web health, and the ecological functioning of these freshwaters. We also describe how freshwaters influence the adjacent terrestrial ecosystems. A better understanding of these dynamic biotic and abiotic interactions between land and freshwater of the boreal forest is a first step toward including these freshwaters in the sustainable management of the boreal forest.

  • Migration in Times of Economic Growth and Recession
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Urban Lives. An Industrial City and Its People During the Twentieth Century. - 9780197761120 - 9780197761090 ; , s. 115-145
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The industrial cities of the twentieth century were intimately dependent on and characterized by migration. This chapter focuses on describing and analyzing migration flows and migrant characteristics in relation to the general economic development of the industrial city of Landskrona. During the first decades of the century, migration tended to be circular between the city and the countryside. Migrants were predominantly young, and the flows reflected volatile industrial development. After World War II, expanding industries required laborers, and inflow from Sweden was supplemented by labor immigration from abroad. At the same time, middle-class families moved to suburbs outside the city. With the industrial crises of the 1970s, out-migration was larger than in-migration. It was mainly white-collar groups that left the town since unskilled and lower-skilled workers had few alternatives. From the mid-1990s, an economic recovery took place resulting in a positive net-migration. This time, in-migrants increasingly came from non-Western countries.

  • Urban space for children on the move
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Transport and Children’s Wellbeing. - 9780128146941 - 9780128146958 ; , s. 217-235
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urban landscapes, structures and design features are associated with travel mode choice and have implications for sustainable living environments. The particular role of the built environment for children’s independent active mobility has received increasing attention in research and practice. However, the complexity of the transactions between person and environment needs to be understood with special focus on children’s use and experiences of the outdoor spaces in a neighborhood. This chapter discusses children’s independent active mobility as an ongoing transaction with the surrounding environment, continuously shifting between transport and play. The chapter synthesizes research on children’s outdoor play and active travel from the fields of environmental psychology, urban planning and landscape architecture. Four theoretical concepts compatible with a comprehensive understanding of children’s mobility in urban open spaces are presented: place attachment, affordances, wayfinding and prospect-refuge. The concepts are elaborated from a child perspective to highlight dimensions in the planning, design and management of outdoor spaces that can support children’s independent active mobility.

  • Swedengate : When commensality norms collide
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Eating Together in the Twenty-first Century : Social Challenges, Community Values, Individual Wellbeing - Social Challenges, Community Values, Individual Wellbeing. - 9781032447698 - 9781003373896 ; , s. 45-56
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter is a case study of #Swedengate, a social media controversy evoked by the supposedly Swedish custom not to invite children's playmates to partake in the family dinner. The practice seems to be in direct confrontation with norms of commensality and reciprocity, and the chapter deals with the cultural context and implications of the practice. The empirical material is an open-ended questionnaire from the Folklife archives at Lund University with 400 responses. The respondents, with first-hand knowledge from their childhood, show a multitude of attitudes to the custom, ranging from anger and despair to a sense of relief at not having to eat strange food with other people. The rationale behind the practice was to guard the family dinner as a time to build the family and structure everyday life. The roots of the custom are traced to peasant society, with its restrictions on spontaneous dinner invitations and the social contract of the welfare state, where independence was an overarching principle. The chapter concludes that commensality is difficult to organize, and the intentions and outcomes of commensal practices can be very different. Meals are emotional, and tools for silent communication, where the silence and tacit knowledge of practices, may lead to unintended cultural clashes. Finally, norms of commensality are in constant transition but rooted in previous generations’ habits and values.
