  • Can a 'single hit' cause limitations in language development? A comparative study of Swedish children with hearing impairment and children with specific language impairment.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders. - : Wiley. - 1368-2822 .- 1460-6984. ; 42:3, s. 307-323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies of language in children with mild-to-moderate hearing impairment ( HI) indicate that they often have problems in phonological shortterm memory (PSTM) and that they have linguistic weaknesses both in vocabulary and morphosyntax similar to children with specific language impairment (SLI). However, children with HI may be more likely than children with SLI to acquire typical language skills as they get older. It has been suggested that the more persisting problems in children with SLI are due to a combination of factors: perceptual, cognitive and/or linguistic. Aims: The main aim of this study was to explore language skills in children with HI in comparison with children with SLI, and how children with both HI and language impairment differ from those with non-impaired spoken language skills. Methods & Procedures: PSTM, output phonology, lexical ability, receptive grammar and verb morphology were assessed in a group of children with mild-to-moderate HI ( n=11) and a group of children with SLI (n=12) aged 5 years 6 months to 9 years 0 months. Outcomes & Results: The HI group tended to score higher than the SLI group on the language measures, although few of the differences were significant. The children with HI had their most obvious weaknesses in PSTM, vocabulary, receptive grammar and inflection of novel verbs. The subgroup of children with HI ( five out of 10) who also showed evidence of grammatical output problems was significantly younger than the remaining children with HI. Correlation analysis showed that the language variables were not associated with age, whereas hearing level was associated with PSTM. Conclusions: Children with HI are at risk for at least a delay in lexical ability, receptive grammar and grammatical production. The problems seen in the HI group might be explained by their low-level perceptual deficit and weak PSTM. For the SLI group the impairment is more severe. From a clinical perspective an important conclusion is that the language development in children with even mild-to-moderate HI deserves attention and support.

  • Eloquent bodies : Rituals in the Context of Alleviating Suffering
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Numen. - : Brill. - 0029-5973 .- 1568-5276. ; 52:3, s. 356-394
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It seems that the revitalization of traditional rituals has been an effective way of developing a new embodiment and identity. The ability of the Canadian Mi'kmaq Indians to rework the cultural body, historically imposed on them by the dominant society, opens the way to weeding out destructive patterns unconsciously or consciously embedded historically in their bodies. The ritual opens up opportunities to explore new habitus and to employ the body in a domain shared with like-minded peers so as to facilitate new ways of approaching the world. The rituals thus provide redemptive opportunities for bodies that have been disempowered by hegemonic contexts, and simultaneously offer social affirmation of the new way of being in the world.

  • “ ‘I’m Inca’ : The Fiesta of Mamacha Carmen in the Andean village of Pisac”
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Ritual Studies. - 0890-1112. ; 21:2, s. 46-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the communication of identity in ritual dancing during the Fiesta de Virgen del Carmen in Pisac, a village in the Peruvian Andes. In framing an arena for representation and interpreting local lifeworlds the fiesta is endowed with profoundly existential significance for the participants. In performing the different characters, the dancers are given opportunities to renegotiate social and economic structures. By using their bodies to transcend their everyday practices and habitus, and to infuse them with new meanings, the dancers articulate new and politically transformative messages about tradition, power and social hierarchy.

  • Protecting Earth? Rappaport's Vision of Rituals as Environmental Practices
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Human Ecology. - 0970-9274. ; 23:4, s. 275-283
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the characteristics of ritual practices, according to Roy Rappaport-s general theory of ritual. I start by discussing technology as a kind of ritual product of science and then briefly present Rappaport-s ritual theory as an aid in understanding how the Mi-kmaq Indians of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, employed rituals in their efforts to protect a sacred mountain from being turned into a superquarry. In Ritual and Religion in the Making of Humanity, Rappaport discusses the concept of the ecosystem as a product of modern Western society, emanating from scientific epistemology rather than religious dogma. Rappaport also identifies -ecological thinking- in what he calls The Book. Although not expressed in terms of modern ecology, he suggests, such pre-modern thought is an adequate medium for protecting environmental values. His vision is to bring these two separate cosmologies closer, in order to emphasize the moral responsibility of humans everywhere on this planet. It is impossible, Rappaport would say, to do something without simultaneously affecting social relations and the environment. Humanity has the power and the technology to destroy places and ecosystems, if morality is left without consideration. Rappaport-s vision was to combine the moral efficacy of ritual with the analytical validity of ecological thinking. But how can modern, de-traditionalized humans create such a synthesis, that reckons with both practical effects and moral implications of human agency?

  • Visiting the Six Worlds : Shamanistic Journeys in Canadian Mi'kmaq Cosmology
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of American Folklore. - 0021-8715 .- 1535-1882. ; 119:473, s. 312-336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mi-kmaq Indians- descriptions of journeys between parallel worlds, as we find them in tales collected from the early seventeenth century to the earlier twentieth, are far too complex to fit into Mircea Eliade-s model of shamanism or romantic images of Indians as being -one with nature-. The tales reveal six parallel worlds in which all types of beings belongs to families, have wigwams, and search for food. The parallelism between the worlds has no significance for beings living their ordinary lives, but it is of the utmost importance for understanding how differing types of beings (people, animals, supernaturals) achieve interworlds journeys. The notions of cosmological deixis and perspectivism are used to explore the narratives and shed light on Mi-kmaq cosmology.
