  • The Relationship Between Domestic and Outward Foreign Direct Investment : The Role of Industry-Specific Effects
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Business Review. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0969-5931 .- 1873-6149. ; 14:6, s. 677-694
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research has been inconclusive as regards the effect of outward foreign direct investment (FDI) on domestic investments. In this article, we show that this inconclusiveness can be explained at a disaggregated level as a function of the way industries are organized. Based on a simple theoretical framework including monitoring and trade costs, we argue that a complementary relationship can be expected to prevail in vertically integrated industries, whereas a substitutionary relationship can be expected in horizontally organized production. The empirical analysis confirms a significant difference between the two categories of industry as regards the impact of outward FDI on domestic investment. The results may thus have profound policy implications.

  • Vanishing Magnetic Interactions in Ferromagnetic Thin Films
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 94:21, s. 217202-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have used element-specific hysteresis measurements, based on the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism technique, to investigate magnetic trilayer structures composed of Fe and Ni layers. Within a critical regime we have discovered a class of structures in which the exchange interaction, the mechanism responsible for the macroscopic magnetism, can become vanishingly small. The experimental observations are supported by first principles theory and are explained as arising from a cancellation of several competing magnetic interactions. Hence, we have discovered a system with a novel exchange interaction between magnetic layers in direct contact that replaces the conventional exchange interaction in ferromagnets.

  • Activity and composition of ammonia oxidizing bacterial communities and emission dynamics of NH3 and N2O in a compost reactor treating organic household waste
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1364-5072 .- 1365-2672. ; 106:5, s. 1502-1511
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To monitor emissions of NH3 and N2O during composting and link these to ammonia oxidation rates and the community structure of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB). A laboratory-scale compost reactor treating organic household waste was run for 2 months. NH3 emissions peaked when pH started to increase. Small amounts of N2O and CH4 were also produced. In total, 16% and less than 1% of the initial N was lost as NH3-N and N2O-N respectively. The potential ammonia oxidation rate, determined by a chlorate inhibition assay, increased fourfold during the first 9 days and then remained high. Initially, both Nitrosospira and Nitrosomonas populations were detected using DGGE analysis of AOB specific 16S rRNA fragments. Only Nitrosomonas europaea was detected under thermophilic conditions, but Nitrosospira populations re-established during the cooling phase. Thermophilic conditions favoured high potential ammonia oxidation rates, suggesting that ammonia oxidation contributed to reduced NH3 emissions. Small but significant amounts of N2O were emitted during the thermophilic phase. The significance of different AOBs detected in the compost for ammonia oxidation is not clear. This study shows that ammonia oxidation occurs at high temperature composting and therefore most likely reduces NH3 emissions.

  • Permissive roles of hematopoietin and cytokine tyrosine kinase receptors in early T-cell development
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 0006-4971 .- 1528-0020. ; 111:4, s. 2083-2090
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although several cytokines have been demonstrated to be critical regulators of development of multiple blood cell lineages, it remains disputed to what degree they act through instructive or permissive mechanisms. Signaling through the FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) receptor and the hematopoietin IL-7 receptor alpha (IL-7Ralpha) has been demonstrated to be of critical importance for sustained thymopoiesis. Signaling triggered by IL-7 and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) is dependent on IL-7Ralpha, and both ligands have been implicated in T-cell development. However, we demonstrate that, whereas thymopoiesis is abolished in adult mice doubly deficient in IL-7 and FLT3 ligand (FLT3L), TSLP does not play a key role in IL-7-independent or FLT3L-independent T lymphopoiesis. Furthermore, whereas previous studies implicated that the role of other cytokine tyrosine kinase receptors in T lymphopoiesis might not involve permissive actions, we demonstrate that ectopic expression of BCL2 is sufficient not only to partially correct the T-cell phenotype of Flt3l(-/-) mice but also to rescue the virtually complete loss of all discernable stages of early T lymphopoiesis in Flt3l(-/-)Il7r(-/-) mice. These findings implicate a permissive role of cytokine receptors of the hematopoietin and tyrosine kinase families in early T lymphopoiesis.

  • Nuclear expression of the RNA-binding protein RBM3 is associated with an improved clinical outcome in breast cancer
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Modern Pathology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0893-3952 .- 1530-0285. ; 22:12, s. 1564-1574
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Single-strand RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) are involved in many aspects of RNA metabolism and in the regulation of gene transcription. The RBP RBM3 was recently suggested to be a proto-oncogene in colorectal cancer; however, such a role has not been corroborated by previous studies in the colon or other tumor types, and the prognostic implications of tumor-specific RBM3 expression remain unclear. Mono-specific antibodies against RBM3 were generated. Antibody specificity was confirmed using siRNA gene silencing, western blotting and immunohistochemistry on a panel of breast cancer cell lines. Using tissue microarrays and IHC, RBM3 protein expression was examined in 48 normal tissues and in 20 common cancers. Additional analysis in two independent breast cancer cohorts (n = 1016) with long-term follow-up was also carried out. RBM3 was upregulated in cancer compared to normal tissues. The nuclear expression of RBM3 in breast cancer was associated with low grade (P<0.001), small tumors (P<0.001), estrogen receptor (ER) positivity (P<0.001) and Ki-67 negativity (P<0.001) in both the breast cancer cohorts. An increased nuclear expression of RBM3 was associated with a prolonged overall and recurrence-free survival. The prognostic value was particularly pronounced in hormone receptor-positive tumors and remained significant in multivariate interaction analysis after controlling for tamoxifen treatment (HR: 0.49, 95% CI: 0.30-0.79, P = 0.004). These data strongly indicate that nuclear RBM3 is an independent favorable prognostic factor in breast cancer, and seems to have a specific role in ER-positive tumors. • Contrast Biases the Autocorrelation Phase Shift Estimation in Doppler Tissue Imaging
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0301-5629 .- 1879-291X. ; 35:3, s. 447-457
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quantitative assessment of regional myocardial function at rest and during stress with Doppler tissue imaging (DTI) plays an important role in daily routine echocardiography. However, reliable visual analysis is largely dependent on image quality and adequate border delineation, which still remains a challenge in a significant number of patients. In this respect, an ultrasound contrast agent (UCA) is often used to improve visualization in patients with suboptimal image quality. The knowledge of how DTI measurements will be affected by UCA present in the tissue is therefore of significant importance for an accurate interpretation of local myocardial motion. The aim of this paper was to investigate how signal contribution from UCA and nonlinear wave propagation influence the performance of the autocorrelation phase shift estimator used for DTI applications. Our results are based on model experiments with a clinical 2-D grayscale scanner and computational simulations or the DTI velocity estimator for synthetically-derived pulses, simulated bubble echoes and experimentally-sampled RF data of transmitted pulses and backscattered contrast echoes. The results show that destruction of UCA present in the tissue will give rise to an apparent bidirectional velocity bias of individual velocity estimates, but that spatial averaging of individual velocity measurements within a region-of-interest will result in a negative bias (away from the transducer) of the estimated mean or mean peak velocity. The UCA destruction will also have a significant impact on the measured integrated mean velocity over time, i.e., displacement. To achieve improved visualization with UCA during DTI-examinations, we either recommend that it is performed at low acoustic powers, mechanical index <= 0.3, thereby minimizing the effects from bubble rupture, or that each Doppler pulse package is preceded by a destruction burst similar to "Flash imaging" to clear the target area of contrast microbubbles.

  • Effects of ultrasound contrast agents on Doppler tissue velocity estimation
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography. - : Elsevier BV. - 0894-7317 .- 1097-6795. ; 19:2, s. 154-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The combination of Doppler tissue imaging and myocardial contrast echocardiography has the potential to provide information about motion and perfusion of the myocardium in a single examination. The purpose of this study was to establish how the presence of ultrasound contrast agent (UCA) affects measurements of Doppler tissue velocities in vivo and in vitro. We performed echocardiography in 12 patients with ischemic heart disease before and immediately after a slow intravenous infusion of the UCA Optison, using color Doppler tissue imaging to examine the effect of contrast agents in vivo. The myocardial peak systolic velocities and their integrals were analyzed in digitally stored cineloops before and after contrast administration. To distinguish between methodologic and physiologic factors affecting the measurement of tissue velocity in vitro, experiments with a rotating disk and a flow cone phantom were also carried out for the 3 contrast agents: Optison, Sonovue, and Sonazoid. in vivo results show that the values for peak systolic velocity increased by about 10% during contrast infusion, from mean 5.2 +/- 1.8 to 5.7 +/- 2.3 cm/s (P = .02, 95% confidence interval 2%-16%). The increase in myocardial peak systolic velocities was verified in experimental models in which the UCA increased the estimated mean velocity in the order of 5% to 20% for the motion interval of 5 to 7 cm/s, corresponding to the myocardial velocities studied in vivo. The response was similar for all 3 contrast agents and was not affected by moderate variations in concentration of the agent. We have shown that the presence UCA will affect Doppler tissue measurements in vivo and in vitro. The observed bias is presumed to be an effect of harmonic signal contribution from rupturing contrast agent microbubbles and does not indicate biologic or physiologic effects.
