  • A Finite Element Analysis of a Crack Penetrating or Deflecting into an Interface in a Thin Laminate
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Key Engineering Materials. - Switzerland : Trans. Tech. Publications. - 1013-9826 .- 1662-9795. ; 312, s. 173-178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The crack tip driving force of a crack growing from a pre-crack that is perpendicular to and terminating at an interface between two materials is investigated using a linear fracture mechanics theory. The analysis is performed both for a crack penetrating the interface, growing straight ahead, and for a crack deflecting into the interface. The results from finite element calculations are compared with asymptotic solutions for infinitesimally small crack extensions. The solution is found to be accurate even for fairly large amounts of crack growth. Further, by comparing the crack tip driving force of the deflected crack with that of the penetrating crack, it is shown how to control the path of the crack by choosing the adhesion of the interface relative to the material toughness.

  • Dynamic data management for machine learning in embedded systems: A case study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1865-1356 .- 1865-1348. ; 370 LNBIP, s. 145-154
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dynamic data and continuously evolving sets of records are essential for a wide variety of today’s data management applications. Such applications range from large, social, content-driven Internet applications, to highly focused data processing verticals like data intensive science, telecommunications and intelligence applications. However, the dynamic and multimodal nature of data makes it challenging to transform it into machine-readable and machine-interpretable forms. In this paper, we report on an action research study that we conducted in collaboration with a multinational company in the embedded systems domain. In our study, and in the context of a real-world industrial application of dynamic data management, we provide insights to data science community and research to guide discussions and future research into dynamic data management in embedded systems. Our study identifies the key challenges in the phases of data collection, data storage and data cleaning that can significantly impact the overall performance of the system.

  • Transient nucleation in selective laser melting of Zr-based bulk metallic glass
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Materials & design. - : Elsevier. - 0264-1275 .- 1873-4197. ; 195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The crystallization rate during selective laser melting (SLM) of bulk metallic glasses (BMG) is a critical factor in maintaining the material's amorphous structure. To increase the understanding of the interplay between the SLM process and the crystallization behavior of BMGs, a numerical model based on the classical nucleation theory has been developed that accounts for the rapid temperature changes associated with SLM. The model is applied to SLM of a Zr-based BMG and it is shown that the transient effects, accounted for by the model, reduce the nucleation rate by up to 15 orders of magnitude below the steady-state nucleation rate on cooling, resulting in less nuclei during the build process. The capability of the proposed modelling approach is demonstrated by comparing the resulting crystalline volume fraction to experimental findings. The agreement between model predictions and the experimental results clearly suggests that transient nucleation effects must be accounted for when considering the crystallization rate during SLM processing of BMGs.

  • Structure-function relationship for CO2 methanation over ceria supported Rh and Ni catalysts under atmospheric pressure conditions
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Catalysis Science & Technology. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2044-4753 .- 2044-4761. ; 9:7, s. 1644-1653
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In situ structural and chemical state characterization of Rh/CeO2 and Ni/CeO2 catalysts during atmospheric pressure CO2 methanation has been performed by a combined array of time-resolved analytical techniques including ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-energy X-ray diffraction and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The ceria phase is partially reduced during the CO2 methanation and in particular Ce3+ species seem to facilitate activation of CO2 molecules. The activated CO2 molecules then react with atomic hydrogen provided from H-2 dissociation on Rh and Ni sites to form formate species. For the most active catalyst (Rh/CeO2), transmission electron microscopy measurements show that the Rh nanoparticles are small (average 4 nm, but with a long tail towards smaller particles) due to a strong interaction between Rh particles and the ceria phase. In contrast, larger nanoparticles were observed for the Ni/CeO2 catalyst (average 6 nm, with no crystallites below 5 nm found), suggesting a weaker interaction with the ceria phase. The higher selectivity towards methane of Rh/CeO2 is proposed to be due to the stronger metal-support interaction.

  • Phase-field modeling of stress-induced precipitation and kinetics in engineering metals
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The formation of brittle compounds in metals operating in corrosive environments can be a tremendous source of embrittlement for industrial structures and such phenomenon is commonly enhanced in presence of stresses. To study this type of microstructural change modeling is preferred to experiment to reduce costs and prevent undesirable environmental impacts. This thesis aims at developing an engineering approach to model stress-induced precipitation, especially near stress concentrators, e.g. crack tips, for multi-phase and polycrystalline metals, with numerical efficiency. In this thesis, four phase-field models are developed and applied on stress-induced hydride precipitation in zirconium and titanium alloys. The energy of the system is minimized through the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation, which provides insights to the kinetics of the phenomenon. In these models, the driving force for precipitation is the coupling between the applied stress and the phase transformation-induced dilatation of the system. Models 1-3 implicitly incorporate near crack-tip stress fields by using linear elastic fracture mechanics so that only the phase-field equation is solved numerically with the finite volume method, reducing the computational costs. Phase transformation is investigated for intragranular, intergranular and interphase cracks in single- and two-phase materials by considering isotropy and some degrees of anisotropy, grain/phase boundary energy, different transition orders and solid solubility limit. Model 4 allows representing anisotropy connected to lattice mismatch and the orientation of the precipitates influenced by the applied stress. The model is employed through the finite element program Abaqus, where the fully coupled thermo-mechanical solving method is applied to the coupled mechanical/phase-field problem. Hydride growth is observed to follow the near-crack tip hydrostatic stress contours and can reach a steady state for specific conditions. The relation between hydride formation kinetics and material properties, and stress relaxation are well-reflected in the results. With the presented approaches, precipitation kinetics including different kinds of defects, multi-phase microstructures, phase/grain boundaries, order transitions and loading modes can be successfully captured with low computational costs. They could therefore contribute to the numerical efficiency of multi-scale environment-assisted embrittlement prediction schemes within commercial software serving engineering projects.

  • Residual stresses in TiN, DLC and MoS2 coated surfaces with regard to their tribological fracture behaviour
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Wear. - : Elsevier BV. - 0043-1648 .- 1873-2577. ; 267:12, s. 2142-2156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thin hard coatings on components and tools are used increasingly due to the rapid development in deposition techniques, tribological performance and application skills. The residual stresses in a coated surface are crucial for its tribological performance. Compressive residual stresses in PVD deposited TiN and DLC coatings were measured to be in the range of 0.03-4 GPa on steel substrate and 0.1-1.3 GPa on silicon. MoS2 coatings had tensional stresses in the range of 0.8-1.3 on steel and 0.16 GPa compressive stresses on silicon. The fracture pattern of coatings deposited on steel substrate were analysed both in bend testing and scratch testing. A micro-scale finite element method (FEM) modelling and stress simulation of a 2 m TiN-coated steel surface was carried out and showed a reduction of the generated tensile buckling stresses in front of the sliding tip when compressive residual stresses of 1 GPa were included in the model. However, this reduction is not similarly observed in the scratch groove behind the tip, possibly due to sliding contact-induced stress relaxation. Scratch and bending tests allowed calculation of the fracture toughness of the three coated surfaces, based on both empirical crack pattern observations and FEM stress calculation, which resulted in highest values for TiN coating followed by MoS2 and DLC coatings, being KC = 4-11, about 2, and 1-2 MPa m1/2, respectively. Higher compressive residual stresses in the coating and higher elastic modulus of the coating correlated to increased fracture toughness of the coated surface.

  • Impact work-rate and wear of a loosely supported beam subject to harmonic excitation
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of IMECE2002. - : ASME Press. - 0791836592 ; , s. 1003-1010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Impact work-rate of a weakly damped beam with elastic two-sided amplitude constraints subject to harmonic excitation is calculated. Impact work-rate is the rate of energy dissipation to the impacting surfaces. The beam is clamped at one end and constrained by unilateral contact sites near the other end. This system was an object of a vibro-impact experiment which was analyzed in our earlier paper (Knudsen and Massih 2000). Detailed nonlinear dynamic behavior of this system is evaluated in our companion paper (Knudsen and Massih 2002b). Computations show that the work-rate for asymmetric orbits is signifi-cantly higher than for symmetric orbits at or near the same frequency. For the vibro-impacting beam, under conditions that exhibit a stable attractor, calculation of work-rate allows us to predict the “lifetime” of the contacting beam due to fretting-wear damage by extending the stable branch and using the local gap between contacting surfaces as a control parameter. That is, upon computation of the impact work-rate, the fretting-wear process time is calculated through back-substitution of the work-rate and gap-width in a given wear law.
