- Linguistic Explorations of Societies (LES) is an interdisciplinary research project with scholars from the fields of political science, computer science, and computational linguistics. The overarching ambition of LES has been to contribute to the survey-based comparative scholarship by compiling and analyzing online text data within and between languages and countries. To this end, the project has developed an online semantic lexicon, which allows researchers to explore meanings and usages of words in online media across a substantial number of geo-coded languages. The lexicon covers data from approximately 140 language-country combinations and is, to our knowledge, the most extensive free research resource of its kind. Such a resource makes it possible to critically examine survey translations and identify discrepancies in order to modify and improve existing survey methodology, and its unique features further enable Internet researchers to study public debate online from a comparative perspective. In this article, we discuss the social scientific rationale for using online text data as a complement to survey data, and present the natural language processing-based methodology behind the lexicon including its underpinning theory and practical modeling. Finally, we engage in a critical reflection about the challenges of using online text data to gauge public opinion and political behavior across the world.

Three-dimensional modelling of radial segregation due to weak convection

- A comprehensive three-dimensional, time-dependent model of heat, momentum and solute transfer during solidification is carried out to illustrate the influence of weak convection, caused by surface tension forces, on radial dopant segregation occurring in crystal growth under micro-gravity conditions. 3D adaptive finite element method is used in order to simulate the motion and deformation of the solidification interface. The geometry studied is a Bridgman configuration with a partly coated surface. The small slots in the coating gives a free surface in a controlled way, and is varied in order to alter the Marangoni flow. In this study, A comparison is made between the numerical results and the experimental results. A good agreement has been observed for the effective distribution coefficient keff and for the radial segregation [Delta]c’. The radial dopant segregation is affected by weak convection.

How is it that despite the variety of images of the Nordic region that are circulating, we still find this recurring idea of a shared Nordic identity? These are some of the questions the current volume seeks to answer.Covering the time period from the early nineteenth century up until the present and encompassing case studies from Britain, Spain, Poland, and South Africa, as well as from the Nordic countries, contributors to the volume investigate the images that have been presented of the Nordic region in the media in and outside of the Nordic countries, how such images have been shaped by mechanisms of mediation, and the channels through which they have been distributed. The chapters address both specific cases such as media events and individual publications, as well as the structural and institutional settings for mediating the Nordic region.

Radial segregation due to weak convection in a floating zone

- The influence of weak convection, caused by surface tension forces, on radial dopant segregation occurring in crystals grown under microgravity conditions is studied numerically. The geometry considered corresponds to a floating-zone configuration with partially coated melt surfaces consisting of small evenly distributed spots of free surfaces. In order to distinguish dopant distribution due to weak convection clearly from distribution due to diffusion the spots only cover one quarter of the periphery. Thus, surface tension-driven convection is allowed only over one quarter of the floating-zone configuration resulting in an asymmetric dopant distribution. The percentage of free surfaces present is varied in order to alter the Marangoni flow rates. The maximum dopant concentration due to radial segregation is plotted as a function of a certain convection level. The results of the present numerical study are supposed to be used to design corresponding space experiments launched at the end of the year 2000.
