  • Campaigning Against Europe? : The Role of Euroskeptic Fringe and Mainstream Parties in the 2009 European Parliament Election
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Marketing. - : Routledge. - 1537-7857 .- 1537-7865. ; 12:1, s. 77-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we analyze political parties' campaign communication during the 2009 European Parliamentary election in 11 countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the UK). We study which types of issues Euroskeptic fringe and Euroskeptic mainstream parties put on their campaign agendas and the kind and extent of EU opposition they voice. Further, we seek to understand whether Euroskeptic and non-Euroskeptic parties co-orient themselves toward each other within their national party systems with regard to their campaigns. To understand the role of Euroskeptic parties in the 2009 European Parliamentary elections, we draw on a systematic content analysis of parties' posters and televised campaign spots. Our results show that it is Euroskeptic parties at the edges of the political spectrum who discuss polity questions of EU integration and who most openly criticize the union. Principled opposition against the project of EU integration, however, can only be observed in the UK. Finally, we find indicators for co-orientation effects regarding the tone of EU mobilization: In national political environments where Euroskeptic parties strongly criticize the EU, pro-European parties at the same time publicly advance pro-EU positions.

  • Public Service Media under Pressure : Comparing Government Policies in Spain and Sweden 2006-2012
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Javnost - The Public. - 1318-3222. ; 21:1, s. 71-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current economic crisis is global in scope, thus aff ecting both countries in the North and in the South. As a conse-quence, national European governments are modifying their policies in order to cut down on public spending. This article compares how public service media policies are shaped in this new situation in two countries that represent very con-trasting models of public service media: Spain and Sweden. The story of public service media survival in times of rapid development of media technology and liberal political hegemony is a common theme in contemporary media and communication research. This study adds to this theme, by exploring the conditions for public service media further by a more explicit focus on how newly elected governments approach public service media policies in times of economic crises. The basic aim of the study is to compare how public service media conditions may change in countries with very diff erent public service media models.

  • The Effects of Digital Media on Political Knowledge and Participation in Election Campaigns : Evidence from Panel Data
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Communication Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 0093-6502 .- 1552-3810. ; 41:1, s. 95-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While the majority of previous research suggests there are positive relationships between digital media use and political participation and knowledge, most studies have relied on cross-sectional surveys and have thus not been able to firmly establish the chain of causality. Also, there is little research investigating use of different forms of digital media and their relative effects on political participation and knowledge. This study examines (a) the effects of digital media use on political participation and knowledge and (b) whether different forms of digital media use affect people differently. Drawing on two representative panel surveys, the study demonstrates that there are only weak effects of digital media use on political learning, but that the use of some digital media forms has appreciable effects on political participation.

  • More Cold Case Than Hot Spot : A Study of Public Opinion on Political Advertising in Swedish Television
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nordicom Review. - Göteborg : Nordicom. - 1403-1108 .- 2001-5119. ; 31:2, s. 95-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How does the public perceive televised political advertising when it is introduced as a completely new element of campaign communications? The European Parliamentary Elections in 2009 may be characterized as the first campaign where such advertising appeared on a larger scale in Sweden, but the National Election Campaign in 2006 was the initial breakthrough for political advertising in television. Two major research questions are raised: First, how can public opinion on such political advertising be described? Second, how are these attitudes related to individual and societal factors? The results indicate that attitudes towards political advertising in Sweden are in line with attitudes towards advertising in general. However, ideological beliefs on the individual level seem to be almost irrelevant. Without being on the political agenda, the political TV-advertising issue is mainly considered from non-political perspectives.

  • Three Attitudes to 140 Characters: The Use and Views of Twitter in Political Party Communications in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Public Communication Review. - 1837-0667. ; 2:2, s. 48-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital media in general, and social media in particular, are a distinctive feature of contemporary election campaign strategies. This article adds to the ongoing discussion of the political power of social media by exploring political party strategies behind the usage of social media. In this study we specifically focus on Twitter (a micro blog) during the latest National Election Campaign in Sweden in 2010. The study exams the degree and character of Twitter usage among parties and prominent party members, and relates content to the declared communication strategies regarding the role of Twitter in the campaign. Methodologically, the paper is based on a quantitative content analysis of all party tweets and on personal interviews with all party campaign managers. The results show that most political parties officially declare a considerable interest in using social media as twitter for diverse campaign purposes. However, the content analysis confirms only a modest party use of Twitter messages and Twitter patterns where messages are most often related to current news media activities and are of a one-way character, with more focus on information dissemination than on interactive dialogue with voters.
