    • Making Sami place-names visible in Sweden: guidelines, practice and ways forwardIn this article, the authors illuminate the process in Sweden when a Sami place-name is considered for inclusion in the official place-name database, which in turn is a prerequisite for the name being made visible in the linguistic landscape through its use on road signs. Based on some problematic aspects of the current process, the authors argue for a revised set of guidelines for working with Sami place-names in Sweden, taking into account the colonial history and ongoing revitalization efforts. Furthermore, it is proposed that increased local participation in place-name processes could be beneficial to the work of finding the right name form, and to gain support from the name users.

  • Fega pojkar pussar aldrig vackra flickor : Könsrelaterade ordspråk i nordnorrländsk agrarmiljö belysta ur språkligt och kulturellt perspektiv.
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation deals with 199 gender related proverbs that were collected in northern Sweden and were used in an agrarian environment, approximately between the beginning of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. The conceptions of gender which these proverbs convey also belong to the same time range and place. The aim of this dissertation is to find out which conceptions of gender that is conveyed by proverbs in an older agrarian environment in northern Sweden. In order to achieve this aim the following question is examined: What conceptions are found in the proverb material of the cultural category woman, the cultural category man and of the relationship between these categories? As a base for an interpretation of the proverbs, which are written in various Swedish dialects, a linguistic analysis is carried out. The interpretation is then formed through a concept that was developed by Kirshenblatt-Gimblett (1982); namely, base meaning. This concept relates to the shared meaning of a proverb by a group of people. The proverbs that include metaphors and similes are analyzed with a method that is developed from the cognitive linguistic theory of blending (Fauconnier & Turner 1996, 1998).The proverb material is sorted in three analytical categories, and presented in separate chapters: Chapter four, The Marriage Market (Äktenskapsmarknaden), chapter five: The Household (Hushållet) and chapter six, Sexuality (Sexualiteten). These categories are in turn divided into sub categories. One example of a salient conceptions of gender that is found in the category The Marriage Market is that the man chooses a woman, not the other way around. One example of a central conception in the category The Household is that the man earns money and supply other resources and the woman takes care of these resources. The significance of the conceptions of male and female sexuality is that they convey the difficulty in controlling a virulent male sexuality. The gender conceptions are analysed as part of a system of gender hegemony and a cultural model of the successful household is suggested based on the proverb material.

  • Birkarlar and Sámi - inter-cultural contacts beyond state control : reconsidering the standing of external tradesmen (birkarlar) in medieval Sámi societies
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Acta Borealia. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0800-3831 .- 1503-111X. ; 33:1, s. 52-80
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is not until the fourteenth century that written records offer a glimpse into the coastal societies of Northern Sweden. Records include references to a social stratum referred to as the birkarlar, who were tradesmen engaged in trading with the Sami. The origin of the birkarlar, their prominent status and the meaning of the term, is an enigma that has been much disputed among scholars although there is consensus about the economic and fiscal supremacy of birkarlar vis-a-vis the Sami. However, the paradox of tradesmen employing force against their most important circle of suppliers and customers remains a puzzle. The birkarla institution is analyzed by means of alternative reading of historical records from the perspective of the indigenous Sami and coastal farming communities. The postulated animosity between Sami and the birkarlar is critically examined in light of the social and economic context of interior and coastal communities during the Late Iron Age and Early Medieval period, and in relation to historically known Sami kinship relationships and marriage traditions. Data are analyzed with regard to demography and social structure, and from a landscape perspective including the logistics and practicalities of inter-cultural contact. Analyses corroborate that birkarlar were deeply rooted in the coastal communities and fully involved in the regular subsistence activities. They were representatives given a commission of trust and contacts between the birkarlar and the Sami were characterized by mutuality and inter-dependence.

  • Bygden, byarna och buan : studier av bebyggelsenamnen i Hackås och Ovikens socknar, med ett särskilt avsnitt om fäbodnamnen
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to investigate the etymological background of the settlement names in the parishes of Hackås and Oviken in the province of Jämtland, and use the names to elucidate the settlement history of the area. Another purpose is to discuss the relationship between, and the semantic development of, the name element and common noun ås. Furthermore, the purpose is to describe the name usage and the name continuity amongst the summer farm names. The selection of names is based on the principles used in the publication series Sveriges ortnamn [The place-names of Sweden], in which this study will be incorporated. In essence, that includes parish names, village names and names of independent farms. In addition to that, summer farm names are analysed. The material has primarily been collected from the Place-name Archive in Uppsala (OAU), and then supplemented through extracting name forms from historical maps and different land registry records. Regarding the summer farm names, workshops have been conducted in collaboration with the local community associations in Hackås and Oviken, which have been the basis for the name continuity discussion. The summer farm names are also morphologically and semantically analysed to reveal patterns in construction and usage. The linguistic analysis of the individual village names in Hackås and Oviken, together with archaeological finds, suggest that there was an Iron Age community in Hackås, while the Oviken area has been used for example as fishing/hunting grounds and was colonised to a greater extent in the medieval era. In Hackås there are several place-names judged to be pre-Christian, such as Hov, Sanne, Salom and the several names constructed with -sta(d). Oviken parish show signs of quick settlement expansion, such as the large number of names with (-)ås or -gård. The name element ås has, because of a large number of medieval settlements founded around the same time, also started to function as denoting settlements, side by side with the nature-describing meaning carried by the common noun. This explains the number of names containing -ås denoting places that does not show the usual characteristics for an ås. Results of the summer farm name analysis show typical structures; summer farm names are often compound and reference ownership/usership or the location. The name usage is an oral rather than written practise. Name continuity for summer farm names has decreased during the last decades as transhumance is no longer widely practised, and several names in the study are unknown to locals.
