  • Multi-Decadal Changes in Tundra Environments and Ecosystems : Synthesis of the International Polar Year-Back to the Future Project (IPY-BTF)
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ambio. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 40:6, s. 705-716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the responses of tundra systemsto global change has global implications. Most tundraregions lack sustained environmental monitoring and oneof the only ways to document multi-decadal change is toresample historic research sites. The International PolarYear (IPY) provided a unique opportunity for such researchthrough the Back to the Future (BTF) project (IPY project#512). This article synthesizes the results from 13 paperswithin this Ambio Special Issue. Abiotic changes includeglacial recession in the Altai Mountains, Russia; increasedsnow depth and hardness, permafrost warming, andincreased growing season length in sub-arctic Sweden;drying of ponds in Greenland; increased nutrient availabilityin Alaskan tundra ponds, and warming at mostlocations studied. Biotic changes ranged from relativelyminor plant community change at two sites in Greenland tomoderate change in the Yukon, and to dramatic increasesin shrub and tree density on Herschel Island, and in subarcticSweden. The population of geese tripled at one sitein northeast Greenland where biomass in non-grazed plotsdoubled. A model parameterized using results from a BTFstudy forecasts substantial declines in all snowbeds andincreases in shrub tundra on Niwot Ridge, Colorado overthe next century. In general, results support and provideimproved capacities for validating experimental manipulation, remote sensing, and modeling studies.

  • Carbon dioxide reduction mechanism on Ru-based electrocatalysts [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)(2)](2+) : insights from first-principles theory
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Energy & Fuels. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2398-4902. ; 5:23, s. 6066-6076
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solar fuel production through the so-called artificial photosynthesis has attracted a great deal of attention to the development of a new world energy matrix that is renewable and environmentally friendly. This process is characterized by light absorption with enough photon energy to generate conduction electrons, which drive the carbon dioxide reduction to produce organic fuels. It is also common to couple Ru-complex electrocatalysts to form a more efficient and selective hybrid system for this application. In this work, we have undertaken a thorough investigation of the redox reaction mechanism of Ru-based electrocatalysts by means of density functional theory (DFT) methods under the experimental conditions that have been previously reported. More specifically, we have studied the electrochemistry and catalytic activity of the [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)(2)](2+) coordination complex. Our theoretical assessment supports the following catalytic cycle: (i) [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)(2)](2+) is transformed into [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)](0) upon two-electron reduction and CO release; (ii) [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)](0) is protonated to form the [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)H](+) hydride complex; (iii) CO2 is activated by the hydride complex through an electrophilic addition to form the [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)(OCHO)](+) intermediate; (iv) the resulting formic acid ligand is released in solution; and, finally, (v) the CO ligand is reattached to the complex to recover the initial [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)(2)](2+) catalyst.

  • Comparison of floating chamber and eddy covariance measurements of lake greenhouse gas fluxes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Biogeosciences. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1726-4170 .- 1726-4189. ; 11, s. 4225-4233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) from lakes may have a large impact on the magnitude of the terrestrial carbon sink. Traditionally lake fluxes have been measured using the floating chamber (FC) technique; however, several recent studies use the eddy covariance (EC) method. We present simultaneous flux measurements using both methods at lake Tämnaren in Sweden during field campaigns in 2011 and 2012. Only very few similar studies exist. For CO2 flux, the two methods agree relatively well during some periods, but deviate substantially at other times. The large discrepancies might be caused by heterogeneity of partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2w) in the EC flux footprint. The methods agree better for CH4 fluxes. It is, however, clear that short-term discontinuous FC measurements are likely to miss important high flux events.

  • Model-derived causal explanations are inherently constrained by hidden assumptions and context : The example of Baltic cod dynamics
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Environmental Modelling & Software. - : Elsevier BV. - 1364-8152 .- 1873-6726. ; 156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Models are widely used for investigating cause-effect relationships in complex systems. However, often different models yield diverging causal claims about specific phenomena. Therefore, critical reflection is needed on causal insights derived from modeling. As an example, we here compare ecological models dealing with the dynamics and collapse of cod in the Baltic Sea. The models addressed different specific questions, but also vary widely in system conceptualization and complexity. With each model, certain ecological factors and mechanisms were analyzed in detail, while others were included but remained unchanged, or were excluded. Model-based causal analyses of the same system are thus inherently constrained by diverse implicit assumptions about possible determinants of causation. In developing recommendations for human action, awareness is needed of this strong context dependence of causal claims, which is often not entirely clear. Model comparisons can be supplemented by integrating findings from multiple models and confronting models with multiple observed patterns.

  • Quantifying the effects of anagenetic and cladogenetic evolution
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Mathematical Biosciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 0025-5564 .- 1879-3134. ; 254, s. 42-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An ongoing debate in evolutionary biology is whether phenotypic change occurs predominantly around the time of speciation or whether it instead accumulates gradually over time. In this work I propose a general framework incorporating both types of change, quantify the effects of speciational change via the correlation between species and attribute the proportion of change to each type. I discuss results of parameter estimation of Hominoid body size in this light. I derive mathematical formulae related to this problem, the probability generating functions of the number of speciation events along a randomly drawn lineage and from the most recent common ancestor of two randomly chosen tip species for a conditioned Yule tree. Additionally I obtain in closed form the variance of the distance from the root to the most recent common ancestor of two randomly chosen tip species.

  • GBS-MeDIP : A protocol for parallel identification of genetic and epigenetic variation in the same reduced fraction of genomes across individuals
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: STAR protocols. - : Cell Press. - 2666-1667. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The GBS-MeDIP protocol combines two previously described techniques, Geno-type-by-Sequencing (GBS) and Methylated-DNA- Immunoprecipitation (MeDIP). Our method allows for parallel and cost-efficient interrogation of genetic and methylomic variants in the DNA of many reduced genomes, taking advantage of the barcoding of DNA samples performed in the GBS and the subsequent creation of DNA pools, then used as an input for the MeDIP. The GBS-MeDIP is particularly suitable to identify genetic and methylomic biomarkers when resources for whole genome interrogation are lacking.

  • Spatially Resolved Measurements in Tropical Reservoirs Reveal Elevated Methane Ebullition at River Inflows and at High Productivity
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Global Biogeochemical Cycles. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0886-6236 .- 1944-9224. ; 35:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An increasing number of rivers are being dammed, particularly in the tropics, and reservoir water surfaces can be a substantial anthropogenic source of greenhouse gases. On average, 80% of the CO2-equivalent emission of reservoirs globally has been attributed to CH4, which is predominantly emitted via ebullition. Since ebullition is highly variable across space and time, both measuring and upscaling to an entire reservoir is challenging, and estimates of reservoir CH4 emission are therefore not well constrained. We measured CH4 ebullition at high spatial resolution with an echosounder and bubble traps in two reservoirs of different use (water storage and hydropower), size and productivity in the tropical Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest biome. Based on the spatially most well-resolved whole-reservoir ebullition measurements in the tropics so far, we found that mean CH4 ebullition was twice as high in river inflow areas than in other parts of the reservoirs, and more than four times higher in the eutrophic reservoir compared to the oligotrophic one. Using different upscaling approaches rendered similar whole-reservoir CH4 ebullition estimates, suggesting that highly spatially resolved measurements may be more important for constraining reservoir-wide CH4 estimates than choice of upscaling approach. The minimum sampling effort was high (>250 and >1700 30-m segments of hydroacoustic survey to reach within 50% or 80% accuracy, respectively). This suggests that traditional manual bubble trap measurements should be abandoned in favour of highly resolved measurements in order to get spatially representative estimates of CH4 ebullition, which accounted for 60 and 99% of total C emission in the two studied reservoirs.

  • Local structure of hydrated nanocrystalline films of the proton conductor BaZr1-xScxO3-x/2 studied by infrared spectroscopy
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Vibrational Spectroscopy. - : Elsevier. - 0924-2031 .- 1873-3697. ; 130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report results from a study of the local structure of hydrated nanocrystalline 2 m films of the well known proton conductor BaZr1-xScxO3-x/2 with x = 0.45, 0.54 and 0.64, using infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The films were prepared by magnetron sputtering. Analysis of the IR spectra focused on the O–H stretching region (2000—3700 cm-1), which reveals the presence of several distinct O–H stretching bands for which the intensity and frequency of each band vary in an unsystematic manner with Sc concentration. The spectra for the two higher Sc concentrations, x = 0.54 and 0.64, exhibit a distinct, highly intense O–H stretching band centered at around 3400–3500 cm-1, which is assigned to relatively symmetric, weakly hydrogen-bonding, proton configurations. The spectrum for the lower Sc concentration, x = 0.45, does not feature such a band but a broader, weaker, O–H stretching band between approximately 2500 and 3700 cm-1, suggesting that the protons are more homogeneously distributed over a range of different local proton coordinations in this relatively weakly doped material. A comparison to the IR spectra of powder samples of similar compositions suggests that for x = 0.45, the spectra and proton coordination of films and powder samples are similar, whereas for x = 0.54 and 0.64, a larger fraction of protons seems to be located in weakly hydrogen-bonding proton configurations in the films compared to the respective powder samples.

  • Tracking changes in the optical properties and molecular composition of dissolved organic matter during drinking water production
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Water Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0043-1354 .- 1879-2448. ; 85, s. 286-294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Absorbance, 3D fluorescence and ultrahigh resolution electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI-FT-ICR-MS) were used to explain patterns in the removal of chromophoric and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (CDOM and FDOM) at the molecular level during drinking water production at four large drinking water treatment plants in Sweden. When dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal was low, shifts in the dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition could not be detected with commonly used DOG-normalized parameters (e.g. specific UV254 absorbance SUVA), but was clearly observed by using differential absorbance and fluorescence or ESI-FT-ICR-MS. In addition, we took a novel approach by identifying how optical parameters were correlated to the elemental composition of DOM by using rank correlation to connect optical properties to chemical formulas assigned to mass peaks from FT-ICR-MS analyses. Coagulation treatment selectively removed FDOM at longer emission wavelengths (450-600 nm), which significantly correlated with chemical formulas containing oxidized carbon (average carbon oxidation state >= 0), low hydrogen to carbon ratios (H/C: average +/- SD = 0.83 +/- 0.13), and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups (O/C = 0.62 +/- 0.10). Slow sand filtration was less efficient in removing DOM, yet selectively targeted FDOM at shorter emission wavelengths (between 300 and 450 nm), which commonly represents algal rather than terrestrial sources. This shorter wavelength FDOM correlated with chemical formulas containing reduced carbon (average carbon oxidation state <= 0), with relatively few carbon-carbon double bonds (H/C = 1.32 +/- 0.16) and less oxygen per carbon (O/C = 0.43 +/- 0.10) than those removed during coagulation. By coupling optical approaches with FT-ICR-MS to characterize DOM, we were for the first time able to confirm the molecular composition of absorbing and fluorescing DOM selectively targeted during drinking water treatment.
