  • An approach towards generating surrogate models by using RBFN with a priori bias
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences & Computers and Information in Engineering Conference, 2014, Vol. 2B. - New York, USA : ASME Press. - 9780791846322
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, an approach to generate surrogate modelsconstructed by radial basis function networks (RBFN) with a prioribias is presented. RBFN as a weighted combination of radialbasis functions only, might become singular and no interpolationis found. The standard approach to avoid this is to add a polynomialbias, where the bias is defined by imposing orthogonalityconditions between the weights of the radial basis functionsand the polynomial basis functions. Here, in the proposed a prioriapproach, the regression coefficients of the polynomial biasare simply calculated by using the normal equation without anyneed of the extra orthogonality prerequisite. In addition to thesimplicity of this approach, the method has also proven to predictthe actual functions more accurately compared to the RBFNwith a posteriori bias. Several test functions, including Rosenbrock,Branin-Hoo, Goldstein-Price functions and two mathematicalfunctions (one large scale), are used to evaluate the performanceof the proposed method by conducting a comparisonstudy and error analysis between the RBFN with a priori and aposteriori known biases. Furthermore, the aforementioned approachesare applied to an engineering design problem, that ismodeling of the material properties of a three phase sphericalgraphite iron (SGI) . The corresponding surrogate models arepresented and compared

  • Value-driven design approach for optimal long-span timber-concrete composite floor in multi-storey wooden residential buildings
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Civil engineering and environmental systems (Print). - : Taylor & Francis. - 1028-6608 .- 1029-0249. ; 37:3, s. 100-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Long-span timber-concrete composite (TCC) floor systems have the potential to address the design challenges for conventional wooden floors in residential multi-storey timber frame buildings. The aim of this paper is to develop a design approach for long-span timber-concrete composite floor system of 6-9 m. A framework based on value-driven design approach has been developed for integration of results from graphical multi-objective optimisation, spreadsheet-based analysis, structural static and dynamic finite element analysis, and multi-criteria decision making. To verify the developed framework, a residential five-storey timber frame building as a case study has been studied. Optimal design includes optimised thickness of the concrete and optimised smeared stiffness of connectors for three different comfort classes A to C in descending order. TCC floor with span length 7.3 [m] belonging to comfort class A and TCC floor with span length 9.0 [m] belonging to comfort class C has been chosen as optimal solutions. The results indicate that proposed and innovative design approach is a promising tool for developers, architects and structural engineers when designing optimal long-span timber-concrete composite floor system.

  • A methodology for microstructure-based structural optimization of cast and injection moulded parts using knowledge-based design automation
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Advances in Engineering Software. - : Elsevier. - 0965-9978 .- 1873-5339. ; 109, s. 44-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The local material behaviour of cast metal and injection moulded parts is highly related to the geometrical design of the part as well as to a large number of process parameters. In order to use structural optimization methods to find the geometry that gives the best possible performance, both the geometry and the effect of the production process on the local material behaviour thus has to be considered. In this work, a multidisciplinary methodology to consider local microstructure-based material behaviour in optimizations of the design of engineering structures is presented. By adopting a knowledge based industrial product realisation perspective combined with a previously presented simulation strategy for microstructure-based material behaviour in Finite Element Analyses (FEA), the methodology integrates Computer Aided Design (CAD), casting and injection moulding simulations, FEA, design automation and a multi-objective optimization scheme into a novel structural optimization method for cast metal and injection moulded polymeric parts. The different concepts and modules in the methodology are described, their implementation into a prototype software is outlined, and the application and relevance of the methodology is discussed.

  • The support of Quality Management to sustainable development : a literature review
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 138, s. 148-157
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quality Management is considered to be suitable as support for the integration of sustainability considerations in areas such as product development. The purpose of this paper is to review research in which Quality Management methods, tools or practices have been used in conjunction with sustainable development initiatives. We have identified four themes that synthesize the research on Quality Management and its support to approaches for sustainable development: (I) supporting sustainability through integration of management systems, (II) Quality Management as support to the implementation of Environmental Management Systems and to the management of sustainability, (III) supporting integration of sustainability considerations in daily work, and (IV) supporting stakeholder management and customer focus. By far the most research has been conducted within the first two themes. This paper also contributes with proposals for future research, such as the need to move beyond existing standards and management systems to enable more radical improvements, and the need for empirical evidence of the effect of integrated management systems on environmental performance. We also highlight the point that Quality Management practices and tools must be developed and adapted in order to support sustainability considerations.

  • Multi-objective optimization of a disc brake system by using SPEA2 and RBFN
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: ASME 2013 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. - New York : ASME Press. - 9780791855898
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Many engineering design optimization problems involve multiple conflicting objectives, which today often are obtained by computational expensive finite element simulations. Evolutionary multi-objective optimization (EMO) methods based on surrogate modeling is one approach of solving this class of problems. In this paper, multi-objective optimization of a disc brake system to a heavy truck by using EMO and radial basis function networks (RBFN) is presented. Three conflicting objectives are considered. These are: 1) minimizing the maximum temperature of the disc brake, 2) maximizing the brake energy of the system and 3) minimizing the mass of the back plate of the brake pad. An iterative Latin hypercube sampling method is used to construct the design of experiments (DoE) for the design variables. Next, thermo-mechanical finite element analysis of the disc brake, including frictional heating between the pad and the disc, is performed in order to determine the values of the first two objectives for the DoE. Surrogate models for the maximum temperature and the brake energy are created using RBFN with polynomial biases. Different radial basis functions are compared using statistical errors and cross validation errors (PRESS) to evaluate the accuracy of the surrogate models and to select the most accurate radial basis function. The multi-objective optimization problem is then solved by employing EMO using the strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm (SPEA2). Finally, the Pareto fronts generated by the proposed methodology are presented and discussed.

  • Radial basis functions as surrogate models with a priori bias in comparison with a posteriori bias
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Structural and multidisciplinary optimization (Print). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1615-147X .- 1615-1488. ; 55:4, s. 1453-1469
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to obtain a robust performance, the established approach when using radial basis function networks (RBF) as metamodels is to add a posteriori bias which is defined by extra orthogonality constraints. We mean that this is not needed, instead the bias can simply be set a priori by using the normal equation, i.e. the bias becomes the corresponding regression model. In this paper we demonstrate that the performance of our suggested approach with a priori bias is in general as good as, or even for many test examples better than, the performance of RBF with a posteriori bias. Using our approach, it is clear that the global response is modelled with the bias and that the details are captured with radial basis functions. The accuracy of the two approaches are investigated by using multiple test functions with different degrees of dimensionality. Furthermore, several modeling criteria, such as the type of radial basis functions used in the RBFs, dimension of the test functions, sampling techniques and size of samples, are considered to study their affect on the performance of the approaches. The power of RBF with a priori bias for surrogate based design optimization is also demonstrated by solving an established engineering benchmark of a welded beam and another benchmark for different sampling sets generated by successive screening, random, Latin hypercube and Hammersley sampling, respectively. The results obtained by evaluation of the performance metrics, the modeling criteria and the presented optimal solutions, demonstrate promising potentials of our RBF with a priori bias, in addition to the simplicity and straight-forward use of the approach.

  • Recirculation during veno-venous extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation - a simulation study
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Artificial Organs. - : SAGE Publications. - 0391-3988 .- 1724-6040. ; 38:1, s. 23-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Veno-venous ECMO is indicated in reversible life-threatening respiratory failure without life-threatening circulatory failure. Recirculation of oxygenated blood in the ECMO circuit decreases efficiency of patient oxygen delivery but is difficult to measure. We seek to identify and quantify some of the factors responsible for recirculation in a simulation model and compare with clinical data. Methods: A closed-loop real-time simulation model of the cardiovascular system has been developed. ECMO is simulated with a fixed flow pump 0 to 5 l/min with various cannulation sites -1) right atrium to inferior vena cava, 2) inferior vena cava to right atrium, and 3) superior+ inferior vena cava to right atrium. Simulations are compared to data from a retrospective cohort of 11 consecutive adult veno-venous ECMO patients in our department. Results: Recirculation increases with increasing ECMO-flow, decreases with increasing cardiac output, and is highly dependent on choice of cannulation sites. A more peripheral drainage site decreases recirculation substantially. Conclusions: Simulations suggest that recirculation is a significant clinical problem in veno-venous ECMO in agreement with clinical data. Due to the difficulties in measuring recirculation and interpretation of the venous oxygen saturation in the ECMO drainage blood, flow settings and cannula positioning should rather be optimized with help of arterial oxygenation parameters. Simulation may be useful in quantification and understanding of recirculation in VV-ECMO.

  • A user-centred development process for an equipment vest for the Swedish police force
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMAN FACTORS AND ERGONOMICS. - : InderScience Publishers. - 2045-7804 .- 2045-7812. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to describe a user-centred development process for an equipment vest for police officers on active duty. Development and evaluation of the vest were conducted through a multidisciplinary collaboration between the police organisation and external researchers with expertise in ergonomics and biomechanics. The development process was initiated with a user needs analysis, followed by pilot testing of the initial vest prototype. In the extensive usability test, 95 police officers participated. Interviews, focus group discussions, and pressure measurements were conducted to assess the vest's functionality, impact on physical load, safety aspects, and signal value. Throughout the process, several important aspects were identified. Researchers delivered results iteratively to the designers and project manager. The results from the user evaluation guided further development, resulting in an equipment vest tailored to the needs and requirements of Swedish police officers on active duty.

  • Vibration performance of timber-concrete composite floor section –verification and validation of analytical and numerical results based on experimental data
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Civil engineering and environmental systems (Print). - : Taylor & Francis. - 1028-6608 .- 1029-0249. ; 39:2, s. 165-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vibration performance of a one-way simply supported timber-concrete composite (TCC) floor section has been studied using analytical as well as numerical methods. Focal points have been verification and validation of results from analytical and numerical calculations of vibration response based on experimental data. For the analytical calculations, floor bending stiffness and vibrational response are determined from methods proposed in the current and revised versions of Eurocode 5. The numerical calculations based on the finite element (FE) method are done using 3D solid elements with orthotropic material parameters. When comparing the results of the FE analysis, better agreement with the experimental data is reached for the fundamental frequency when 3D solid elements are used rather than 3D beam elements. Furthermore, better agreement with the experimental data is reached for RMS acceleration by FE analysis rather than the method based on Eurocode 5. For detailed analysis, the authors suggest performing dynamic FE analysis and calculating vibration response from the TCC floor’s modal responses as eigenmodes and natural eigenfrequencies below 40 Hz. For future studies, it is recommended that the verification of vibration response may be accomplished by applying standard EN 16929.

  • Contact Resistance of Ti-Si-C-Ag and Ti-Si-C-Ag-Pd Nanocomposite Coatings
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electronic Materials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0361-5235 .- 1543-186X. ; 41:3, s. 560-567
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ti-Si-C-Ag-Pd and Ti-Si-C-Ag nanocomposite coatings were deposited by direct-current magnetron sputtering on Cu substrates with an electroplated Ni layer. Analytical electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy show that the nanocomposites consist of TiC, Ag:Pd, and amorphous SiC. The contact resistance of these coatings against a spherical Au-Co surface was measured for applied contact forces up to 5 N. Ti-Si-C-Ag-Pd coatings with Ag:Pd top coating had similar to 10 times lower contact resistance at contact forces below 1 N (similar to 10 m Omega at similar to 0.1 N), and 2 to 3 times lower for contact forces around 5 N (< 1 m Omega at 5 N), compared with the Ti-Si-C-Ag coating.
